"The pope announced that he will leave his ministry at 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) on February 28," said the spokesman, Federico Lombardi.
Last year the Pope started using a cane on occasions and recently he appeared to have trouble reading the text of an address he delivered in Rome.
There was no immediate official comment from the Vatican.
In November last year, he declared that it is "beautiful to be old".
"The quality of a society, I'd say of a civilisation, is judged by how well it treats its elderly," the 85-year-old pontiff said during the visit to the home run by the Saint Egidio Community, a Catholic charity.

While it was "beautiful to be old", age brought challenges and difficulties with which he himself was familiar.
"I know well the difficulties, the problems and the limits of this age, and I know that these difficulties are aggravated for many people by the economic crisis," the Pope said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/the-pope/9862194/Pope-Benedict-XVI-to-resign.html

I don't know why they always choose ancient Popes anyway
Yay it was fun when he was chosen last time.
Pretty surprising, guess he is getting on a bit, often has to do the Midnight masses a few hours early and stuff doesn't he. Don't think he's been that bad a Pope but it's been a pretty bad few years for the Catholic Church

He should resign for being the man who wrote the policies on how to cover up kiddy fiddling in the church. I'm not sure if that was the exact name of the policy, but I'm using my artistic license.
Some other ***** will now get to wear silly hats, bright red shoes, and be the leader of the most abhorrent organisation in history.
..I don't think there is any need for a figurehead like the Pope anymore...it must be very expensive to have one and the money could be put to better use elsewhere....isn't that the whole point of the Roman Catholic christianity anyway...

The Pope is to resign at the end of this month in an entirely unexpected development, the Vatican has confirmed.
The reasons behind the head of the Catholic Church's surprise resignation have yet to emerge.
Has he gone bonkers?
Will he keep his benefits package?

It's a pretty big part of the Catholic faith though, don't think they can really be expected to just do away with the Papacy
The Pope is still very influential too, even if most don't really care for him there are still millions who find him an inspiring figure and think he's done a lot of good work to reconnect the Church to ordinary people, his visit to Britain for example turned out to be a lot more successful than most people thought

The unexpected development - the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years - surprised governments, Vatican-watchers and even his closest aides.
The Vatican says it expects a new Pope to be elected before Easter.
Perhaps they'll fast-track a high-flier from the graduate intake.

This is unprecedented in centuries , I wonder if there are some lurid allegations on their way out which could seriously damage the Catholic Church. Maybe these are connected to his alleged involvement in the Hitler Youth movement.
Perhaps this is a damage limitation exercise...???
Doubt it, people make too much of the Hitler Youth thing really, membership was required of all kids his age by law so he didn't exactly have much of choice, he was apparently always opposed to the Nazis as well

Have to say I was surprised to hear this earlier.
Odd timing in my view too, unless the health element is the real main issue as to why he is going.
Quite a chaotic time to throw the RC Church into a new election for a Pope with the Lent and Easter periods starting.

And now that they've gotten egg on their face, among other things... <---obligatory and precursory egg (and other stuff) joke... The Catholic Church is nothing short of a joke, in itself, these days. The Pope is not sick, he's not ailing, he's getting the hell out of it all. Burning/sinking ship. It's a damned shame with so many of the child predators that ruined all of it. I was born and raised as a Catholic, and opted out about the time of high school, around 16/17 years of age, when I began to scrutinize my faith. But the rest of this bs going on with underage boys is completely disgusting. I served as an altarboy for several years and never had a problem with the priests, nor did any of my classmates, but I cannot imagine the poor kids who *did* have a problem in other various parishes. Vomitous. If it goes down, it goes down. :( For the Churches that offer comfort and aid to people, and hold onto the original virtues and practices, without the awful acts, I'd like to see them continue on, unburdened by all of this crap.
Jesus.

He wrote the policies that protected priests and the church over defenceless children. Because that's what Jesus would have preached.

Yeah, but no nails through the wrists or feet this time, right? Plus fringe benefits, like: drinking from gold-based or gold-like things that are shiny(Jesus was a carpenter, so you only drank from wooden vessels, as we saw in Indiana Jones), large crowds that are always waaay below you, the Pope mobile, and no dying for real. You should go for this position, Jesus. You earned it, man. Or more like *super* man... <heart to victory sign fist pump> Only white smoke for the Immaculate One!

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's most senior Roman Catholic cleric, a cardinal expected to take part in the conclave to choose the next pope, rejected allegations on Sunday that he had behaved in an "inappropriate" way with other priests.
The Observer newspaper said Cardinal Keith O'Brien, 74, the archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, who is known for outspoken views on homosexuality, had been reported to the Vatican over allegations of inappropriate behaviour stretching back 30 years.
"Cardinal O'Brien contests these claims and is taking legal advice," a spokesman for the cardinal said.
Three priests and a former priest, from a Scottish diocese, have complained to the Vatican and demanded O'Brien's immediate resignation, the newspaper said, adding that they wanted the conclave to choose Pope Benedict's successor to be "clean".
The Observer gave little detail on the allegations but said one complainant had said O'Brien made an inappropriate approach after night prayers. Another priest complained of unwanted behaviour by O'Brien after a late-night drinking session.
Last week, O'Brien advocated allowing Catholic priests to marry as many found it difficult to cope with celibacy.
His comments last year labelling gay marriage a "grotesque subversion" landed him with a "Bigot of the Year" award from gay rights group Stonewall.
The Catholic Church's handling of the sexual abuse of children and others by priests has dogged the papacy of Benedict, who is due to step down on Thursday after becoming the first pope in centuries to choose to resign.
The next leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics will be chosen by 117 cardinals in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.
Almost 10,000 people have signed a petition urging a U.S. cardinal not to take part in selecting the next pope, saying to do so would insult victims of sexual abuse by priests committed while he was Archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985 to 2011

I had the vague hope that this new guy might actually be more progressive in his leadership of the church, but according to Wikipedia, he's professed that the gay rights movement is "Demonic in origin". So yay! Another Papacy full of antiquated teachings and intolerance for all!

I am very interested about what the new Pope will bring to the Catholic Church, in terms of teaching.

Seen as we're a Protestant Country don't know why we/the media care so much. This will probably dominate for ages, telling us what the Pope has been up to on his first days and **** like that :bored:

Well, like Iceman said, this guy is going to be the religious leader for a sixth of the world's population. That's an incredible amount of influence he holds. Factor in the issue that Catholicism is one of the of the fastest growing religions in the developing world then it really does make sense that his gets a lot of media attention.
Don't get me wrong, I'll be sick to death of it too (I'm already sick of it now actually), but when you think of all that stuff I just mentioned then it kind of makes sense.

Just seems a bit silly after the kick-in the Catholic Church has gotten recently, it's like they're washing over it and hoping people will forget just cos there's a new Pope.

So they picked a 76 year old pope who doesn't support abortion or contraception, doesn't accept homosexuality and who resigned as Bishop of Buenos Aires due to "ill health". Seems odd to me if the Vatican are trying to show the world a new face... still, it has got all the newsrooms whipped up into a frenzy over the new appointment and made them momentarily forget about the paedophilia and the Vatican Bank scandal...

I guess it makes sense for them to choose a South American Pope though, as the majority of the Worlds Catholics are there and alot of European Catholics are turning away from the church

Seeing the coverage on CNN yesterday was literally like watching a KKK rally. Thousands of people gathered together celebrating ideals of hatred and bigotry.
It really made me feel sick, but also gave me an appreciation for history because people used to think KKK rallies were okay too. It really puts racism into context. In 100 years, people will look back on rallies like this and think of them the same way that today we think of Klan rallies and Nazi rallies.

My view is that this is a strategic choice by the Vatican "Inner circle" inasmuch as it allows a Non European to become Pope but it knows the standing of the Pope has been diluted with the fact that the previous Pope is still alive. So effectively we have two Popes at the present time. As this new Pope is quite old and the previous Pope is older still my thoughts are that they would like both Popes to join St Peter sooner rather than later paving the way for what they really want ......... a young Italian Pope
Maybe in 5 years this will be the likelihood.....!!!!

I don't think we will see him in the UK anytime soon, he has already reportedly made comments re the Falklands islands which he should not have made since he is a religious leader. Representing over a billion Catholics worldwide he cannot afford to get involved in politics as he will surely upset large groups of Catholics in one country or another.

I am from a Roman Catholic background but religion plays little part in my life.
I have nothing against this man at all,I felt sure they would choose a Pope from outside Europe although this one does have Italian roots.
I am still puzzled as to the real reason Pope Benedict left the position, there have been Popes who have rarely left the Vatican anyway. It was hardly a necessity to undertake the heavy travelling recent Popes have.
There was an opportunity to do a John Paul 11 here and elect a much younger Pope who could have been more forward looking, they failed to grasp that and despite this one seeming very warm and friendly, I feel they have taken a further step backwards and chosen the wrong one.
