Some students and parents have campaigned for their high school prom to ban gay people.

Sullivan High School in Sullivan, Indiana refused to meet their request, leading to the campaigners to consider setting up a prom of their own, reports NBC2.

One student, Kynon Johnson, stated: "If we can get a good prom, then we can convince more people to come and follow what they believe."

Another student said: "We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted."

However, Jim Davis - a local resident - has criticised plans of the '2013 Sullivan Traditional Prom', arguing that everyone should be considered equal.

"The feeling of being loved and belonging is universal," he said.

A Facebook group for the 'traditional' prom was set up but has since been taken down.

A counter-group 'Support the Sullivan High School Prom for All Students' has gathered more than 700 Facebook likes so far.

That picture at the top clearly depicts a man holding a boys hand. I think bbfan is calling all gay people paedophiles.

Vile. Cancel the prom and let just only the gay kids go. I'm sure it'll be a lot more fun anyway :worship:

Sadly there are some bigots in the world with attitudes like these students.

Positive discrimination is not the way to go, Jack.

As soon as I read the title I knew it'd be in Hicksville, USA. It's hard to believe people still think like this in 2013.

Actually, Its not a contradiction. I love my friend who is an alcoholic but I don't think his alcoholism is right or should be accepted.

At the end of the day these people are clearly religious. You can not reason with them, just have pity for them.

Alcoholism isn't genetic. They still drink cow and gate as babies, and not Jim and Beam.

I don't really want to get into my friends personal life but genetics can predispose you to addiction.

I don't really think alcoholism, which is a mental illness, is really comparable to homosexuality in the context of what happened here.

All I'm saying its you can love someone yet completely disagree with a certain aspect of their life. Unless you consider being gay to be a 100% of who you are, which I believe most members of LGBT community do not.
