"Coming out of the dark ages" doesn't necessarily mean allowing children to have sex with adults. But if you're campaigning for a change of law, good luck fighting through that particular amendment to the Sexual Offences Act.

In 1860 the age of consent was 12, it was later raised to 13 because of young girls being sold to brothels. In the same year it was illegal for men to have sex with each other, the punishment was death.

These laws have evolved in differnt directions, the age of consent now protects more girls. While gay male sex is no longer outlawed.

Also although I think 16 is about right for age of consent it's true that it isn't something that's static, throughout the world it varies and through history it has done in this country, until the late 1800s it was 12. No reason why it won't change again, although I do imagine that'll be someway in the future and dunno if it'll be lowered
