Both argued to be the acts' most credible & artistic albums (I'm talking about Rihanna & Beyonce if you haven't sussed it out already) and coincidentally both artists' 4th output. They also didn't do well commercially.
But which is better?

Rated R is just flawless and 4 is one of Beys best albums, although it does have a couple of fillers (rather die young, run the world)

not impressed with eigther. both are just over produced crap with a few songs that are radio ready. Neither are masterpieces. Neither are particularly interesting or even worthy of conversation. They are both over produced pieces of crap that are mostly filler but have a few radio ready hits.

I love both of them, but 4 edges it slightly for me. Nearly all of 4's tracks have grown so much on me and I love them all, but there are a couple I really don't like on Rated R (Photographs, Stupid In Love).
