Very unlikely, Edward VIII is the only British monarch who's ever voluntarily abdicated and the Queen has no real reason to do so

it's not like her profession is something you can retire from, she'd basically live the same ish life if she wasn't queen..ish

Didn't she say she wasn't going to abdicate?

I would guess if she started having memory problems and health becoming a problem she may do but she does see it as a lifelong commitment, so under normal circumstances I cannot see her abdicating.

It would be very impressive if she decided to abolish the monarchy before she goes.

If she really wants to do the right thing, then she should use her power to abolish the monarchy and declare herself the very last monarch of England, and that from now on the UK will be a true democracy.

She should abolish the monarchy and the house of lords. Abolish all titles.

She is staying until she is near Death.

So , for example
one day a Cold/Flu that someone else has could Kill her
as she is so old and working to hard.

Yes because he went with a Working Class American woman
who was twice divorced

It was on Ch4HD last night
new info on a Evil Bishop Lang
who put up a fight using the Times paper first
the King gave up his fight

Happy days in 1932

His gig as King in 1936
was short.

[In 1929, Time magazine reported that Edward teased his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, the wife of his younger brother Albert, by calling her "Queen Elizabeth". The magazine asked if "she did not sometimes wonder how much truth there is in the story that he once said he would renounce his rights upon the death of George V – which would make her nickname come true]

Someone will have to pry that crown from her dead fingers. She has no intention of going anywhere, and only a severe mental health issue like dementia could probably force her into it.

You don't have a problem with unelected people getting to decide public policy? How can you justify it? It's anathema to democracy. How can you be okay with the elite appointing people to be part of the parliament. The parliament should be democratically elected by the people to do work for the people.

They don't get to decide public policy Alex. They're ceremonial, not actual monarchs of yore.

Your country was created without having a monarchy in place, because rightly so, Europeans wanted to be free from the church and monarchs they left behind over here.

The purpose of them was the transition of the power from rulers to the people without abolishing their positions/status.

Since then, they have become part of history and tradition. I agree with you, I'd switch to a republic in a heart beat. The monarchy, along with the house of lords, are the last vestiges of our old empire and should be done away with.

Compared to who?

At least we can actually elect leaders. You don't even have any kind of semblance of democracy. You had Gordon Brown as a leader. Remind me again when anyone voted him into power?

At least we elect People, not Parties.

Alex why do you always have to justify why you're the better nation in every single discussion? we seem to be able to admitt out faults and so do people from other countries i've discussed as such as Canadians. Yet Americans never seem to be able to admitt any faults, and just going into every discussion with a supremacy attitude? Each country has its faults, and the monarchy no longer has any real power, it's just a tradition that we are keeping from the foundations of our country

Yes that was rare a Deal
in Blair giving him the power
it was to late as New Labour went stupid
as the People never got to Vote this Bitter Scottish Man in.

I'm not saying we're better. I'm discussing ideas. Why do you have to make it a competition between UK VS. USA every time i discuss UK politics? You always act like I'm attacking you personally whenever I have an opinion about UK politics.

There are plenty of British people on here that show opinions about US politics, but I'm not allowed to have opinions about UK politics?

how much did the country spend on the celebrations for the royal family and that ridiculous floatilla in the rain? how much did the country spend. Cause i doubt very much the Queen paid for that. and how many people are going hungry, and suffering, that the tories are saying we should cut their benefits.

How much did YOU spend on watching the Queen float down the river???

and how many people voted for her to be your Queen? zero.

Lmao. Do you realise how much money the Royal family generates and has to pay back into government?

You could always find that older thread and refresh your memory.

Edit - Voted for the Queen? Is that supposed to be a serious argument? She holds no actual active power anymore so it's not an issue.

No I don't have a clue, tell me. How much money does the royal family give to the government? I would love to hear the actual number.

We hear a lot about Kate's tits getting photographed, but we never really hear who is paying for her to be on those French beaches.

I'd really like to know who is paying for the royals to be on these vacations, Harry in Vegas, Kate in the souoth of France. who is paying for these paparazzi fests?

remind me again what is Kate's income? What is WIlliams's income? How are they affording these lavish holidays?

I think the queen will stay on until the end. The only way she will abdicate is if she's too ill to continue to do her duty.

Alex, millions of people stood to watch that "ridiculous flotilla in the rain". No one made them, they chose to. I guess if you're not a Brit you're not going to understand why.

I understand why. It's called Patriotism/nationalism.

I understand. It's just annoying when Brits make fun of Americans for being patriotic when they are just the same.

I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Which hypocrisy are you pointing out? That some people don't like patriotism and have an opinion on the Americans and then some other people from the same country are patriotic. That's not hypocrisy, that's different people with different opinions.

Then why do they exist? They do have power over the people. If they don't then what is their purpose?

They're little more than a tourist attraction. It's absurd really to keep up such an archaic tradition when a Presidential Republic would allow proper representation of the people, but it's a tradition that's in for the long haul really. The majority of people over here love the Royals too much to see them go.
