View Full Version : Noel Gallagher: 'Emeli Sande? That's music for grannies'

Noel Gallagher has laid into Emeli Sande, saying her music is "for grannies".

In an interview with Shortlist, he singled out the multiple Brit-winner, adding that he doesn't get her music, and had a few words for Paloma Faith too. He said: "You look at the 'best' now. Paloma Faith? Do me a favour. Who’s ****ing decided she’s a star? Emeli Sande? That is ****ing music for grannies. I don’t get it."

Noel also spoke out about being asked to write songs for younger artists. He said: "Here's another thing. I must have been asked to write songs for people about 20 times. 'Hey man – we should write some songs together'. ****ing write your own songs. I spent 46 years busting my arse to get here, slaving over a line in a song for a month. So no, I won’t write a song with you, you little prick."

Next week sees the start of the shows curated by Gallagher for the Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall. He's lined up Kasabian, Primal Scream, Ryan Adams, Paul Weller and Rizzle Kicks for the gigs, and will take to the stage himself with Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Gruff Rhys.

As reported yesterday, Gallagher said he'd approached "middle class" acts like Ed Sheeran and Mumford and Sons, who had declined. "I got let down a lot. Everybody says yes to your face. And then the agent will call and say, ‘'Ah, they’re going to be in Australia at the time.' Really? Well they never said that to me.

Good old Noel :pipe:

Reading through this I cannot help but picture both Noel and Liam in CBB. that would be a real fiery and intense series to watch for sure, never likely to be considered though, never mind happen.

I am a great Oasis fan and really admire Noels songwriting,I also think Noel has a great voice too, Liam however has the massive stage presence.
As to his comments, well I can like all sorts of music, whether it be classed as Grannie music or music for kids and all types of music inbetween too so for me there is room for all artistes and types of music.

Interesting read though.

Paloma is flawless, how rude :bored: and then goes on to state his love for Ed Sheeran who wouldn't know the meaning of upbeat if it twatted him on the nose :joker:

But hey, at least he loves Mumford & Sons, nice shoutout Noel <3.

Emeli Sande is a bore, Paloma's likable, Ed's the devil and Mumford & Sons lost my interest when they re-released their first album and called it their second.

it's quite uncalled for but the music press have built the gallaghers up to be the controversial, opinionated loudmouths in the UK and they probably ham it up to get in the papers, to be honest.

seems a bit harsh to have a go at paloma...

So long as he makes himself feel better at the expense of another artist, he's happy I guess. I'm no fan of Emeli Sande but the slating she got from Noel is, I suppose, to be expected from him now. He's had people kissing his arse for a couple of decades and no one big enough to tell him he's wrong. Why shouldn't he say what he thinks though? It's because we've got all these nicey nice artists that British music is in such a state. You only have to look at this years Brits to see that.

Noel is one of the biggest supporters of up and coming bands. He's said some stuff in the past about various bands but he's had his fair share of people slagging him off.

I'll tell you why... because if someone asks another artist what they think of Noel Gallagher and they answer honestly, all bloody hell breaks loose. He can be honest and say it's not his thing and he doesn't really warm to it, but no... he's got to be the rock and roll rebel . He's done it for too long now and to be honest, it's been done better.

Noel supports bands who play music like his own. Anything else is crap to him. He can't accept that just because he doesn't like it, doesn't necessarily mean it's crap, and that everyone who does like it is a moron.

If I wanted to listen to Oasis in their purest form, I'd cut out the middle man and listen to the Beatles.

When has hell ever broken loose? LOL He's takes it on this chin and doesn't even care. And it's good he's a rock and roll rebel, we need more people like him in the industry. But to be fair, there was nothing rock and roll or rebelious about what he said, he was just being honest. He didn't insult them personally or anything, just the music.

He's into a fair bit of music but if you like and know a certain genre you're best off sticking with it. He'd be no good helping an up and coming rapper out would he because he knows nothing of the genre.

And Livia, I can't believe you used that old line LOL The only song of Oasis that sounds anything like The Beatles is 'Whatever'. They're much more influenced by The Stone Roses.

You're not one of those who hates the Gallaghers because of what they said about Nirvana are you? :suspect:

Oh yeah, the Gallaghers are very laid back when someone cricitises him, I've noticed that about them...............

I'm not suggesting he should be helping out people in other genres, just that he should be a little more respectful of people who aren't in his particular genre.

No, I don't dislike the Gallaghers because of what they said about Nirvana. I dislike them because I find them rude and aggresive, and musically they are at best, a mediocre Beatles tribute band with three or four decent original tunes to their name. Lots of their tracks are beatles inspired (obviously). It makes me laugh that while they're ripping off the Beatles, fans call it "paying tribute".

In recent memory the last proper feud they had was with Robbie Williams who's a twat anyway. And Liam finished that one at the Q awards in 2005.

But if he's asked to comment on British music there's no point in him sugar coating it. It's just his opinion and he always likes to word things in a way so they're more entertaining.

As I said, they're more Stone Roses influenced and they had the piano from Imagine and a few odd lines here and there but that's it.

I don't hate you LOL but the whole Beatles thing is a tired lazy argument that doesn't really have much basis I'm afraid.

I notice that Oasis fans get rather touchy when someone makes the all-too-obvious Beatles comparison. Of course, calling it a tired argument doesn't mean it isn't true.

Robbie Williams is a twat though, that's something we can agree on.

There's some there, but they were very much their own band. Everyone recognised the Oasis sound as the whole Beatles comparison was years ago when they were saying they wanted to be bigger than The Beatles and all that. There will never be another band that made in impact Oasis did to youth culture. Arctic Monkey's have come the closest. And I'm not being touchy, just realistic :p

Personally, I don't care about their new endeavours, I'd much rather they put their differences aside and reformed Oasis. Biting the hand that feeds them and all that - they're successful for a reason, and that reason is Oasis. They're both gob****es and I think that's fine if they're producing the goods to back it up, but they aren't. The sooner they stop the child like tantrums and make up, the better.

As for the comments about the state of British music - yes, it's pretty dire, but Emeli Sandé is at least putting out quality music. She might be overexposed and her music doesn't really appeal to me, but she's living her dream and it's far better to reward an actual songwriter with accolades than handing it over to, I don't know, a David Guetta dance track or whatever.

I didn't say that, I said that (in response to the claims that Oasis fans are all older) Emeli isn't exactly reeling in the youth herself... she's not a 'cool' artist, in the same vein people like Ed Sheeran or Jake Bugg are, and obviously all the urban artists.

and greg you're so wrong i can't

you shouldn't be forced to go with what was the most successful outing. they're artists, they make music because they want to not because it might pay the bills. they've done that already, they're probably set for life.

and actually noel gallagher's high flying birds was an excellent album (and reached #1) so i struggle to see what you mean by "not producing the goods" on either level, commercial or critical.

Oasis were clearly lagging towards the end, and the evidence of that is Beady Eye. Terrible, terrible band. The only creative force still doing good music is Noel, and if he wants to do it solo because his brother's a twat, then cool.
