View Full Version : Should Parts of the forum be hidden to guests?

It might save on quite a lot of drama :pipe:
Guests can view the BB part of the site but if they want to see anything that isn't BB related they have to sign up, people who join don't generally start posting straight away in C&G it's more of a transition when BB ends
Plus I don't really like the idea of people who aren't even members viewing pictures I or other members have posted in MTM
Yeah I think the chat sections should be members only, especially mtm etc.
I'm sure we had a thread about this before.
Guests can't view MTM anyway can they? thought they can't view any thread with over 1000 posts or something like that

Yes, only BB parts. Been on other forums that do similar things and it seems to work

Yeah, decent idea. Though I do quite also like the idea I came up with of members being banned from certain threads (as opposed to the entire forum) for maybe a couple of hours or days if trouble is being caused, I think that might work better, that's if there's any way to implement it of course.

Meh, they'd only cause drama in a different thread if they were banned from another

I don't know, when I was looking for a forum that I liked, I enjoyed for a time seeing the whole variety of this forum on offer.
If I had been only able to see, say, the BB threads then I may well have got a shock after joining once seeing the other arears of the forum,I may even have not joined.
For me personally, I don't mind arguing,I try not to myself but sometimes you have to react at times in defending yourself.
Having said that, looking at only the BB threads anyway, you see plenty discord there between members as is natural with so many different housemates involved and differring opinions from members too.
I also have to say, I do like Jack's kind of 'time out' idea of a thread where arguments are raging and the members involved are only allowed there in order to maybe get things said and then cool down.
Often,I would think anyway, a clear ban in such situations can fuel dissension on return and increase bad feeling too at least some of the time rather than cure the problem.

And then you ban them from the whole forum.

YES, this may get people in who don't particularly like some humour in C&G or drama. It is predominantly a Big Brother forum afterall.

It's a big brother forum, if someone's on here there's a 90% it's to look at big brother/another reality TV show info, not Patrick's media coursework, when members join they don't start posting in other area's of the forum straight away anyway
Hmmm thinking again, the BB section isn't really active. People might think it's just a dead forum or something. Don't think there's enough activity to do stuff like that now.
Well, all reality tv sections then (XF/BB/IAC etc), and when on the main page they can see the most active threads are in other parts of the forum.
People are nosy, they'll join just to see something even if it's boring

Well,it isn't my forum and it is down to who owns it as to what it should be like and for the selected mods to control what goes on.
However, it is a public forum, so open to the public to look in and join if they want to. People looking in are looked upon likely as potential members so they should be able to see all there is and get an idea of how it works before they join, that is how I would run something if I had one myself.
Thankfully though, I don't.

Not very open if you close off parts of the forum. Or have I misunderstood?

That's the poster's problem.
You should always be wary and accept the possible consequences for putting personal details on the internet.
Like a certain poster who complained about their photograph doing the rounds only has themselves to blame for putting it out there in the first place.
If you want to be private, be private. If you willingly put yourself on a public arena you can't complain.

Agreed. In light of what has happened I think it needs to be seriously considered.

..I’ve thought about this a lot Smithy because my instinct would have been to agree with you ..and I think if MTM was to ever be reinstated, it should be a new thread with maybe some sort of an ‘advisory’ about the possibility of pics being taken and used in other areas of the internet..?..that might have been in the OP already, I don’t know but the thread has gone atm and it’s admin’s decision as to whether it returns...anyway,..I personally feel that ’private areas’ have been shown not to solve but to create...to create ‘hate’ and to nurture it and to create hurt and to create judgement and to create paranoia etc...nothing positive at all..and I don’t think that creating them here will have any positive effect either...the thing with other sites and chat rooms etc is that they aren’t moderated and so these things can be discussed freely which is cool and everyone’s prerogative to do so and is also natural to do so ..but in doing that, it’s also giving attention/drama and so giving ‘control’ to the people who have tried to control and whose intention has been to control through their decision of who is ‘deserving of hate’.... /spite/abuse/insults etc...but not only those on TiBB because I think it’s also a general enabling of all people who take pleasure out of such things and who think that they ‘have the right to abuse and insult’ just because they can/the internet allows them to do so..you know..?..
..I don’t know that I’ve always understood Admin decisions and stances on the ‘please do not discuss’ thing...but I actually think that this is the only way that we don’t enable general ‘keyboard warriors’.. and especially in the ‘control’ that admin do have and the control that members do have in that all areas stay open and that none of us give any attention, any ‘control’ to people who try to demand it by not giving them one second of our attention or time in discussing them at all/enabling and feeding their ‘drama’/their spite..there is nothing to be ‘hidden’ because people who try to cause misery to others/ people they don’t know at all, really are of no importance/not worthy of any discussion or time unless we let them be by changing things that have been part of the ethos of TiBB ....what I do think though is that there is a positive to be taken from ‘recent events’ in that the forum is not a ‘bubble’ and that the internet in general is not ‘safe’ and that should never be forgotten by anyone with personal things posted...just a little more caution etc is never a bad thing...anyway just my thoughts...
