Yes I love driving, I thought I wasn't that bothered about it but then my parents pretty much forced me to have lessons and since I passed it's great just being able to rock off anywhere in the old Corsa whenever I feel like it, that was a good 2 years ago too so the novelty hasn't worn off yet. Hell of a lot more convenient too

I was a bit like that, I was 24 before I learned, I lived in the City at the time so I didn't really need to drive. I can't remember how I survived without my car now though

Yes...I had my first lesson on my 17th birthday...just glad I passed before they brought in the theory test. All we had to do was answer a couple of questions from the highways code that the examiner asked.

Do you drive manual or auto in NY Kaz? I drove both when I was in the States. It took a bit to get used to changing gears with my right hand but soon get used to it don't you?

I have driven a manual car(or stick shift as we call it) and it was horrible. The one and only time i ever stole my parents car I could barely even get it into gear, and i stalled out at every traffic light, and of course everyone behind me was honking their horns when the light turned green. and it was so traumatic that i never did it again.

I've had my permit for nearly four years, failed the test five times. If I fail my next one I have to take the written test all over again </3

Yeah, the whole gear thing is the hardest part of learning to drive. Here though if you sit your driving test in an automatic car you're still not licensed to drive a manual until you pass the test in a manual car

I once took a company test in a Land Rover with, effectively, 20 manual gears :

4 forward gears, 1 reverse (main gear stick - black) - normal
high ratio and low ratio lever (red knob on top) - doubles gears to 10
2wd or 4wd (yellow knob) - 2 wheel drive for normal road driving and 4 wheel drive for off-road or when road conditions require - e.g. ice and snow)

Luckily, I didn't get the model with additional Fairey Overdrive .....

Auto annie,as they are the only cars my brother has,but I got used to them when I lived there,so it's no problem for me,more of a problem is remembering to drive on the right side of the road, lol.

Yeah I felt that way too, I did 3 months of lessons when I turned 17 but my instructor was terrible (he smoked cigarettes while I drove...) and I had no passion for it at all, then when I was 19 and home from uni for the summer my mum decided to book me a theory test so I had to learn theory without having driven a car in like two years, which I passed, and then it was due to expire this summer just past so I started learning to drive again and managed to pass in 65 days :D which I was pretty proud of. I have a passion for it now but I think I'm quite nervous because I really wasn't learning for very long and then I had to go back to uni so I've barely driven a car since I passed in August.

Congrats!! Was it your first test? I was so cocky when I took my test that I had arranged to pick some friends up that night. Needless to say I failed and had to get the bus!! Gutted. I passed second time but didn't even tell anyone it was my test that time.

Thanks guys! My examiner was a right knob, so reluctant to pass me; he was like, 'i'm happy to tell you, you've passed' and I was like 'are you actually serious?' then he was like 'well it wasn't very good though was it' and I was like 'well it will ****ing do me, thanks'... my instructor was furious with the guy, so so rude.

He was just pissed I didn't do enough from to fail me.. could just tell he didn't like me. Complaint submitted!

Niall
18-04-2013, 06:53 PM
Nope. I can't be bothered to learn (yet) either. Being in London, there's no need really because the public transport is excellent. That and when I move to go to Uni in autumn I'll be inner-city, so there won't be much reason to drive. It would be a waste of money really to learn right now.

A video of a driver spending 30 minutes repeatedly failing to reverse into a generous parking space has become an internet hit. But how do you parallel park successfully?

Sometimes everything just falls into place - you turn the wheel and the car slips elegantly backwards into a space that barely accommodates its length.

At other times - usually with a queue of traffic building up - a wheel mounts the kerb, a hubcap is scraped, the bumper of a neighbouring car is nudged, or the car is left stranded several feet from the pavement.

So, how are drivers supposed to parallel park?

"We as human beings are not genetically programmed to go backwards, so reversing in general is really quite difficult when you're learning to drive," says Kevin Delaney, head of road safety at the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

"If you're driving forwards you turn the wheel quite a way and you get a gentle turn of the car. Going backwards it doesn't work like that - you get a really sharp turn with little use of the wheel.

"Parallel parking complicates the issue further - you're aiming for a defined space."

So, some pointers are needed to ensure success.

The answer: How to parallel park

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/67323000/gif/_67323416_parallel_parking_624in.gif

1.Pull up alongside the gap you want to park in and check it's big enough - allow a minimum 2ft (60cm) at both ends
2.Move slowly forwards until the back of your car is alongside the back of the car in front of your space
3.Turn the steering wheel to the left, just how far will depend on your car
4.Move slowly backwards - using the rear view mirror to keep an eye on the car behind you and the nearside mirror to check the position of the kerb
5.When your car is close to the kerb, your car should be clear of the one in front - turn the steering wheel to the right, to bring the front of your car close to the kerb
6.Straighten up the wheels by turning the steering wheel to the left
Source: Institute of Advanced Motorists

To make this work there are two other things to bear in mind, says Delaney.

One is that you need to feel confident, the other is to accept that you're going to have to keep on practising until you get it right.

NOTE : In this instance, small is good, big is bad ..... :laugh2:

I can't park. That is my only downfall. A year since I've been driving and I still have make sure I park in a space where I can pull straight out of.

No, the thought of doing so terrifies me and I'll never try it.

Instead of learning to drive I shall simply marry a rich elderly lady and poison her afternoon tea which will result in me inheriting her riches so I can afford to hire a driver.

It's a very logical, reasonable and realistic plan.

I did have driving lessons last year but stopped them due to money. I would love to drive its is so much better than walking.
