I haven't seen many, I did like Saving Private Ryan, and I do intend to watch more of them.

Of the ones I've seen I liked Jarhead the best, but I'm not sure if that is classed as a war film

Great list... I'd like to switch Zulu and Kwai, and add The Longest Day in place of Cross of Iron.

Zulu or Cross of Iron or In Which We Serve or Cockleshell Heroes .....

Oh! In Which We Serve... brilliant film. I love those old British black and white war films. Cottage for Rent, A Canterbury Tale, Went The Day Well... they should have their own category.

Apocalypse Now is one of the top three films ever made. There is no finer war film.

I got The longest day on my sky planner, I recorded it of TCM about a month ago, still haven't got round to watching it yet, i'm sure i'll enjoy it, it's got to have one the greatest ensemble cast's ever.

Where Eagles Dare is probably my favourite war film, watched it numerous times.

From the list my faves are Schindler's List, The Great Escape and even though I wouldn't class it as a true war film, Inglourious Basterds. :D

I liked that hooker scene from full metal jacket, other than that I'm not a fan of war movies.

I love all these movies, theyre masterpieces.
when you consider from here to eternity with burt lancaster/montgomery clift, sinatra, borgnine, deborah kerr........then young lions wiht brando, clift, dean martin
these were epic movies, brilliant stories superbly told and stellar performances

apocolypse now is of course a classic, you could watch that every day and never get tired of it

where eagles dare, brilliant, a very unusual casting but it worked a treat

Braveheart amazing cinematography and an epic story too, very moving

schindlers list heartbreaking, kingsley, neeson and fiennes all fantastic too

But in the end in comes to 2 war movies for me above all others

Zulu and The deer Hunter

I just cant seperate these 2.

amazingly shot, remarkable stories, attention to detail......I think the landscape adds a certain infinite quality to these remarkable movies that will make them so timeless they will still be admired in 200 years.....

the last scenes in both are tear jerkers, the welsh regiment singing men of harlech as they make their last stand against thousands of zulus.......then in deer hunter as they all return to their beloved home for thanksgiving, minus chris walkens character and they somehow manage to sing God bless america......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwl4xV6wuRI
Id also add deer hunter is the most naturalistic war film Ive ever seen.

I'm generally not a fan of war movies. War movies and Mafia movies are probably the genres that I enjoy the least.

But if I had to pick one, I'd have to go with Glory. Gone With The Wind would be a close second.
