..do you believe in tipping generously at restaurants...so long as you're happy with the meal/service obviously..?...

Yes, and it annoys me when I go out with people who are too tight to leave a tip, especially when the service has been outstanding.

..do you still tip if it hasn't been so good...?..not awful but average...

..one of my big pet hates is when you go out in a big group and everyone just puts money in for their food and doesn't account for a tip, when that person has just served 20 or so people....

Depends. If the food has been awful but the service is good I'll only tip if the waitress/waiter gets to keep the whole tip, otherwise I don't.

And yes, I always make big groups put in a pound for the service if it's been good.

..yeah, for me, I think I would only ever not tip if I felt the waiter/waitress had been unecessarily rude or something...I don't think that's ever happened before though...

The 10% rule is perfectly adequate.

Yeah, I tip around 10-15%. I don't like it when they add the tip onto the bill without informing you. More and more places are doing that these days. Bit cheeky IMO.

I don't think we get to figure out if the waiter/waitress keeps it entirely. The tips run down the line, to busboys, the bar, etc, usually, unless you're talking 'diner' food. They all work hard, and unless they're complete ****s they should get something. Whilst growing up, it's always been about 10%, but now I'm hearing 15% is the new low, and 20% is on par. Eh, I just want to eat something, enjoy the food, and leave, not have to pay a mortgage on someone's house. Large parties are a different event, altogether.

That all being said, I give 15% if they're good, if exceptional, 17%-20%. Much better to cook at home and have a nice meal without the worry. But we all must get out from time to time.

I think over there, you have service people whose salaries are tips only, so around 20% is more important. Over here, every person working in the sector will be on the equivalent of about 10 dollars/hr plus tips. So tipping 10% over here is completely fine.

In principle I believe in tipping, in practice however if I don't intend to go back to this restaurant it's very tempting to not spare with a few extra quid

I tip, depending on the service, but I will only tip the person in person, if you see what I mean. I refuse to pay service charges in restaurants and always knock them off the bill.

I don't tip unless the waiter/waitress was really nice and helpful. Other than that, they get paid anyway, it's their job, and I'm often paying enough for the food anyway, let alone extra just for the sake of it.

Saying that, I do agree that if I know it goes straight to the waiter/waitress and they were really great, like more than their job requires them to do, then yeah I have no problem with tipping.

I can't afford to tip usually, otherwise I would be generous.

If the person is really good/nice yes, don't see the point if they're just doing their job

Don't tip delivery people

I would generally leave a tip, unless the service has been dire, or a service charge is added on. The better the service, the better the tip.
