In southern Kentucky, where children get their first guns even before they start first grade, Stephanie Sparks paid little attention as her 5-year-old son, Kristian, played with the rifle he was given last year. Then, as she stepped onto the front porch while cleaning the kitchen, “she heard the gun go off,” a coroner said.

In a horrific accident Tuesday that shocked a rural area far removed from the national debate over gun control, the boy had killed his 2-year-old sister, Caroline, with a single shot to the chest.

Apparently its common for kids to have guns in Kentucky...I have no words...

In what Sane world would you give a 5 year old kid a Rifle, The Person who gave the gun to the Kid has to take the responsibly along with the parents who let him keep it, it's just crazy. actually feel sorry for the 5 year old he almost certainty didn't have much idea of how much damage he would do or even have any idea of how to handle the thing in the first place

I know, I heard about this story earlier, I just can't even fathom how anyone would ever think giving a 5 year old a real gun is a good idea and how is it legal for children to have guns? :bored: I feel very sorry for that child.......baby really, who's going to have to live with the fact that he killed his sister because of his parents stupidity

Apparently is quite normal to give children real guns in this part of rural USA, In fact the gun in question is tailor made for a young child and is branded with the logo "My first Gun...."

Only in America.....................!!!!!!

Can America just ******ing stop being so stupid, and ban guns? They wonder why these things keep happening and they have such a bad reputation. They've themselves to blame.

Disgrace. Poor girl.

I heard this on the news this morning, apparently the Mum said the gun had been in the corner for a year, but she had no idea the gun was loaded! Wouldn't you check, and what kinda moron gives a 5 year old a loaded gun as a present.

I agree it will be particularly bad for the boy, who will most likely have to deal with the guilt and grief throughout his life's duration.

I'm lost for words so much over this I can't even. :bored:

I worked in America...with kids...and at no point in time did I see any five year olds with access to guns. It's only typical in some parts I think.

Fair enough. Guns being legal in any case is barbaric but there are some complete morons in charge of certain states if children as young as 5 are allowed to access guns (and something tells me that he had this gun before that as well).

It's beyond words, I have nothing but sympathy for the children. A girl's lost her life and a boy will have to live with blood on his hands because of his parents' lack of anything resembling common sense.

I totally agree with you. It's crazy. When I was there, there was a community pool and one day one of the life guards was shot and killed at the pool whilst on duty in front of children's etc by her ex boyfriend. (I wasn't there but it was awful afterwards as all the other lifeguards were destroyed by it and a lot of the children had to have counselling).

I don't think it's as bad in the north really though is it? I only saw it in South Carolina....there you could buy guns in the sports stores pretty much... A lot of the people I met had hand guns...scared me to death to be honest but that was the only incident I saw. I heard about a few shootings but nothing other than that one horrific incident...

All the time I was in NY I never saw or heard an incident ,the only time i did hear gunfire was when we went to Florida, now THAT was scarey.
