Labour have won the South Shields parliamentary by-election, retaining a seat they have held since 1935.

Labour saw their majority halved to under 5,000 in Thursday's poll as The UK Independence Party finished second, with a 24% share of the vote.

The Conservatives were pushed into third while their Liberal Democrat coalition partners finished seventh.

A poke in the eye for Labour, a massive boost to UKIP and, inevitably, the wooden spoon to the so-called "coalition" ..... :pipe:

The UKIP support is saddening but unsurprising.

It seems they have a big following in the north east. I have yet to meet anyone who supports them though, its very odd...

OTOH, Lady Dorothy Macbeth Brookes (BNP) got 711 votes, which is the right idea to about the same number of people ..... ;)

The party also lost its deposit, having secured less than 5% of the total votes cast.

:laugh2:

Disastrous result particularly for the Lib Dems. For Labour though, their share of the vote only fell by about 1% from the 2010 election on a far lower turnout.

Have to admit,it is a really good result for UKIP though, from nowhere to 2nd, that takes some doing.
