Last month, Lauryn Hill signed a $1 million deal with Sony that will likely help her avoid prison time for tax evasion, Billboard reports. The deal will help her launch a new label, Observe Creation Music, and stipulates that she record five new songs, followed by a new album-- which would be her first since 2001's MTV Unplugged No. 2.0. Yesterday she posted the first of these new tracks, a cutting, rapid-fire social critique called "Neurotic Society (Compuslory Mix)".
Just because she inked the Sony deal, though, don't think Ms. Hill is going to start censoring herself anytime soon. In a characteristically no-bull**** message posted on her Tumblr, she wrote:
Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!
