ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So, I need some clarification here, sir, on one of the twists. It was my understanding that any one of the loved ones of someone at Redemption Island can sub in before a duel if they like, but we only saw you asking Gervase if he’d like to take Marissa’s place. Is it only the most recent person that was sent there that can be subbed out, or did you just not show you asking Rupert and Candice’s spouses if they wanted to take their place as well?
JEFF PROBST: It was understood that you could take the place of your loved one anytime they were dueling. So everybody knew it was an ongoing opportunity. In the case of Candice and Rupert, it was a bit unique in that we just offered the RI swap beat off the top of the show and they had both made their decisions and it was pretty clear it was a “final answer” so I didn’t hit it too hard again in episode 2. But yes, they can switch out anytime they want, but we will only show it if there is a story. Otherwise it just wastes valuable story time!

EW: I immediately had mixed feelings about Candice’s decision to give the hidden immunity idol clue to her husband after she won the duel. On one hand, it helps him potentially find a valuable tool in the game. On the other, it immediately makes him stand out as a target. What was your take when she did it?
PROBST: I would do the same thing and offer it to my loved one. Historically, having an idol has been extremely helpful in the game, despite any target. If there is a Monday morning quarterback assessment to be mad,e I would make it on John not playing it the right way. There are so many ways to position it — he chose the most isolating. He didn’t fully bring in the group to share it with them and he also didn’t go full tilt to find it — so I think he was a bit left in the middle.

EW: You’ve said it time and time again — you can only fake being who you really are for so long out there in the elements. Sure enough, evil Colton emerged right on schedule. Is this pretty much what you expected from him out there?
PROBST: I wasn’t sure what to expect from Colton. Truthfully, I could have done the season without him but that’s often the case when it comes to casting. We don’t all always agree on who should be on the show. But as his personality began to emerge in these early days it did feel very familiar to the last time he played and began to confirm for me what I felt the first time he played — which is he engineered his own quit. It’s just my personal observation and Colton would certainly tell a different story. But I think there is a consistency to Colton that is hard to deny.

PROBST: Ah very good questions. I was surprised by the strategy to vote out Rachel to get to Tyson. Never saw that one coming even in all the pretend scenarios we walked through with our creative team. I hope he does not switch places. I don’t think Rachel cares nearly as much as Tyson. Plus, Rachel’s shot at winning is not as strong as Tyson’s simply due to his experience. As for Colton, either way it’s good drama. One thing I have to give Colton is — he’s compelling. He is polarizing and at times infuriating for people, but he’s always compelling.

The replacement aspect is a weak novelty. What we see is that some people are probably just their to be pawns for their friend/lover/relative and that otherwise they probably wouldn't even have taken part. Holmes: Tell me about Tadhana. All we’re seeing is the five guys ruling the roost. What else was going on there?
Foulger: It was definitely very obvious with Brad. Brad wasn’t secretive about anything. He was dominating that tribe, telling everybody what to do. It was very obvious there was a guy alliance. I only had two choices; either get the girls and try to pull one of those guys which I thought would’ve been hard. Or, forget the girls and try to make a strong alliance with the guys.
Holmes: Let me get this straight; you’re saying Brad wasn’t subtle?
Foulger: (Laughs) Did it look subtle on TV?! He was obvious about everything.

Holmes: Before the game, Jeff Probst and Tyson both mentioned that they were worried about how you would do emotionally. From what we saw it seemed like you were doing a good job out there.
Foulger: Jeff told me before the show that I was his question mark before the game. I told him I didn’t know what I was going to do either. I am a very strong person, but I have emotions too. When I got out there I was pretty strong actually. I did pretty well out there.

Holmes: Tadhana voted Laura Boneham out of the tribe immediately. We never found out why.
Foulger: I didn’t even know everybody’s name. They didn’t show my vote. I actually voted for Katie. I had to put down, “Tina’s Daughter” because I didn’t know her name. It was very stressful. But I think at that point the only thing you can do is go by physical appearance. How good are these people going to be in challenges? With her being the older woman, looking like maybe the weaker of the girls, I think that’s why she was targeted.

Holmes: I was there for that first challenge and you guys dominated the water portion. The puzzle team blew it, but they’re all still there. Why wasn’t there any blowback from their performance?
Foulger: I still don’t understand that. Katie, Ciera, and Caleb did the puzzle and not only did we lose, but we lost pretty badly. There were three rounds to that puzzle and they didn’t finish the first round. For one of them to not be on the chopping block doesn’t make sense to me. But, that’s where Brad comes in. Brad likes that they volunteered for that part of the challenge because it is higher stress. He appreciated that.

Holmes: The moment you and Tyson shared last night was very heartwarming. I’m not used to that from Tyson. Tyson tends to be too-cool-for school. I’m worried that having you in the game ruined his reputation as a bad boy.
Foulger: (Laughs) I don’t think it ruined his reputation. I think it’s nice to see a different side of Tyson. It’s a sweeter side.

They do that old doozie at every possible opportunity on Survivor but it's become so transparent and obvious that it's like a spoiler as to what's going to happen at tribal.

Dalton Ross from ew.com said Jeff didn't want Colton back, but Mark Burnett the executive producer overruled him.

RC said on tvtalk when they were shooting Survivor Philippines. Jeff told them that Colton had quit. That he faked his illness.

EW: So Candice is eliminated after coming in last place in the duel at Redemption Island. How, if at all, did your impression of her change after her third outing on the show?

PROBST: It hasn’t changed much. I liked her the first time she played. I liked her the second time and I liked her most of all this time. Wait a second, I guess my opinion did change — I grew to like her even more! She’s a really shrewd player, a f.ierce competitor, she’s beautiful and smart and she doesn’t take any s— from anybody. I don’t even think she takes any s— from her husband. She was at a disadvantage because her and John were our alternates this year, so they arrived very late in the process and I think that was part of the reason she was the person they voted out. Then again, I have no idea why these people make most of the decisions they make — I just speculate. But Candice is definitely on my list of really strong players.
