Cardiff hit-and-run: Matthew Tvrdon admits manslaughter
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-22661553

A van driver has admitted killing mother-of-three Karina Menzies in a series of hit-and-run incidents around Cardiff in October.

Matthew Tvrdon, 31, admitted manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility at Cardiff Crown Court. He also admitted seven attempted murder charges and one of dangerous driving.

The victims' families have seven days to decide whether to accept the pleas.

Until their decision, Mr Tvrdon, of no fixed abode, is still due to be tried.

Mr Tvrdon faces a total of 32 charges including counts of actual bodily harm with intent and grievous bodily harm with intent.

During the hearing, he also pleaded not guilty to murder and six counts of attempted murder.

His barrister told the court his client was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

Ms Menzies, 31, died on 19 October 2012 after Tvrdon ran her over at a fire station forecourt in Ely.

Others were injured in the incident which happened during the afternoon school run.

She was walking with two of her children when she was killed.

Regardless of his mental condition, he should be brought before a court to answer the 32 charges for murder, attempted murder, actual bodily harm with intent and grievous bodily harm with intent .....

A man who admitted carrying out a series of hit-and-run incidents in Cardiff in which a mother-of-three was killed is expected to be sentenced.

Matthew Tvrdon, 31, of no fixed abode, has admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and seven counts of attempted murder.

Mr Tvrdon is due to be sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court later.

During an earlier hearing, prosecutors said they would consult the victims' families before deciding whether or not to press ahead with a murder trial.

The BBC understands that following that consultation, the decision was made not to put Mr Tvrdon on trial for the murder of Ms Menzies but to accept the plea of guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

If the families don't want to go through a trial, that's understandable, but Tvrdon should be banged up for life .... :hmph:

Clearly this man is seriously mentally ill and it would suit no one to stage a criminal trial. More emphasis should be on how this man avoided detection for so long within his own community.

Perhaps an Inquiry to look into how all the various medical professional agencies failed to see this man was a paraniod schizophrenic. And what of his family they also need to shoulder some of the blame over this.

How many times are we to read stories that appear at the outset like the one above only later to read that the perpertrator is mentally ill and should not be walking around in public...!!!

The van driver who killed a mother-of-three and injured 17 other people in a series of hit-and-runs around Cardiff has been detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

Good ..... it's the least we could have expected ..... :pipe:

Tvrdon was told he would only he released from Ashworth maximum security hospital in Merseyside, if a mental health tribunal is satisfied he should be released. He was also given a 25-year driving ban.

After the hearing, Ms Menzies' sister Samantha said: "Nothing will be good enough. At least he's away for a long time. I hope he never gets out. It's not really justice in my eyes."

No, it's not .....

He is of course Mentally Ill and the symptoms of that illness caused him to want to kill people so he must never be released from a secure Mental Hospital.

But at what point does evil wrongdoing become classified as a Mental Illness ? .Choosing to hurt someone, is that a rational thought taken from a position of free will, and if people are hurt or worse then the perpertrator is punished under the Criminal justice system and rightly so. But what if that thought or thoughts of violence are developed in the brain due to hormone inbalances or chemical deficiencies is that person technically mentally ill or just an evil sadistic bast***

Where is the line ?
