Is facebook and twitter a threat to society?
In the fact its a breeding ground for hate, racism, sexism, bullying?
or do you feel its part of everyday life and we should just ignore the people making the disgusting posts that in some case's result in death.

Jesus.

Threat to society might be a little dramatic. I avoid them.

its in terms of things like the hate generated towards muslims following the soldier murder and the riots that happen when that other guy got shot by police.

I don't think people need FB or twitter to stir up hate on the internet. If they didn't exist, then it would still happen in my view.

There is also a huge freedom of speech issue. The crazier and more outlandish ideas, the more I want to hear them.

it would!, but there is no easier or faster way to get people on the streets causing millions of pounds of damage and the possibility of loss of life.

I think that's more a result of the internet, rather than specifically those sites. If we decided to remove them from the net, then replacements would pop up instantly. Herd mentality takes over. I'd still rather know what the crazies are thinking, rather than them working away in the background.

What is the answer, in your view?

I hate both mediums though I have a FB account but avoid it in the main. Just like the internet there are good and bad aspects to FB. Twitter is just a nonsense though.

..but surely, before Facebook/Twitter, people texted..and before that, they phoned...etc...if people are determined to 'stir up hate' then they will do it...that's more about the people who do it and not how it's done....

EDIT:..there is a saying that love finds a way..but hate finds a way as well....

if we cant ban it!, then tighter controls, you cant walk up to a police officer on the street and call him a ***** so you should not be able to do it online.

with fb and twitter we can see a soldier having his head hacked off and it can happen in an instant.
how many more children have to kill them selfes in their bedrooms before people do something.

Well the world was much worse before the internet. racism, homophobia, and sexism were far worse before twitter and facebook even existed. I don't think they fuel hate or make society worse at all.

I do think bullying needs to be censored by facebook and twitter though. If someone is being harassed twitter and facebook should do more to protect people when it's reported.

..but the TV news showed it as well...and the whole internet, not just FB and Twitter....

You can. Free speech doesn't equal consequence-free speech.

I do agree that they have way too much power and they aren't elected but I still use them for now. FB asked me for my phone number the other day, that was too far..there's no way I tell them that.

Yeah I got that the other day too, they can piss off tbh.

I suppose social media has both pro's and cons like most things, it can be a good thing to keep in contact with family and friends that maybe live too far away or people you havent seen in a long time but then again I suppose emails could be used for that too hmm and it's a free way of getting a hold of people but as usual some have to take it too far and spend the better part of their days posting far too much revealing information about their life, then theres the trolls and the bullying that causes a ton of problems too and dont even get me started on the companies that have jumped on the bandwagon and use it for advertising, I read a quote once about FB destroying social interaction, I kinda agree with that.

Yes, and on the upside, if there is to be seen an upside, people have been caught haven't they? because of things they have devulged on those sites and even on youtube.

I don't use Twitter or facebook, used to have a myspace, but can't even remember my details for that anymore.

I think if you use them responsibly, they are fine, its just when people use them to harass and bully they need to be kept in check,I do think they have diminished social meetings etc, everyone is always on their phones on FB,it's so annoying.

I completely disagree, but I don't believe telling someone to go kill themselves should have any restrictions placed on it anyway. People were saying that way before the internet.

I have both and they sort of got big whilst I was going through school.
I think I had a Myspace at 14, Facebook at 15 and Twitter at 16.

Although they've never done me any harm, I do think that they have had a detrimental effect on young people.
School children can be cruel as it is and Facebook and Twitter act as further outlets for bullying; away from the playground.

I wish they could be tighter on the age restrictions as well. My 9 year old cousin has a Facebook and I refuse to accept him. Facebooks full of stuff that young kids shouldn't be looking at and I think it's half the reason for the over sexualisation of young kids these days. Constantly taking "sexy" profile pictures and trying to out-do their 'friends'.

That plus it's a mega distraction from revision and even going out and having a life.

I do love it for socialising and keeping in touch with old friends though. I'm very conflicted on how I feel about Social Networking tbf. :idc:

Can't you keep it private and just the circle of friends you want though? Or would you rather an open facebook?

Also what happens if social network sites like Facebook suddenly decide to close, would peeps automatically lose all thier contacts? or would such sites have to give fair notice if they decided to close down?

I think it's actually the opposite... people who use social media to express nasty views already had those views, or perhaps their views have become more extreme because of what they do online - but the thing is, because they're expressing them online, they're identifying themselves as being -phobic/-ist people and often can be prosecuted for inciting hatred. Even twenty years ago, ten years ago, that was never a possibility, so I think that in spite of how amplified all the craziness seems; in reality it's helping to expose these people.
