They had to cut him from the pipe,they tried to pull him out but couldn't so they had to cut the pipe,how lucky(probably wrong word)is that baby,like Niamh said I hope he finds a good and loving home.

Wow...it's amazing he survived... Plus hasn't got any infections from the filth and germs in the pipes. He was one strong little boy. How he continues to thrive with no long lasting problems. :love:

You can be unaware that you are pregnant. I seriously doubt you can be unaware that you have just had a baby.

Along with everything else, the umbilical cord must have torn if this story is to be believed so the mother will have had extreme bleeding.

A newborn baby boy lodged in a sewage pipe directly beneath a toilet has been rescued by firefighters in eastern China.

Suggestions that the child had been dumped have been revised after it emerged that the 22-year-old unmarried mother of the baby was the one who raised the alarm.

According to a police source in Jinhua, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the woman gave birth unexpectedly when she went to the lavatory on Saturday, and the newborn fell into the squat toilet.

The mother, who had hidden her pregnancy, telephoned her landlord, claiming she heard "weird noises" in the pipe, and the proprietor called police after spotting the infant.

Firefighters had to remove the pipe, reported to be 10cm (three inches) in diameter, and take it to a nearby hospital, where doctors carefully cut around it to rescue the baby inside.

They spent nearly an hour taking the tube apart piece by piece with pliers and saws and finally recovered the 5lb (2.3kg) boy, whose placenta was still attached.

From the time he was found until when he was taken out, the child - named Baby 59 from the number of his hospital incubator - was stuck in the tube for two to three hours, according to the policeman who declined to be named

"The woman was on the scene during the entire rescue process ... and admitted (she was the mother) when we asked her," he said, adding they were still looking for the boy's father.

"We need further investigations to find out if she had any malicious intentions" before deciding whether the mother would be charged, he added.

According to the officer: "The baby is very healthy now and can be released from the hospital."

But the mother was in a serious condition due to complications from the delivery, he added.

Video footage of the rescue was broadcast nationally overnight before details of the unexpected birth emerged.

The news triggered hundreds of thousands of comments on China's hugely popular Weibo service, which is similar to Twitter, with users expressing good wishes for the baby.

One user, If-Free, said watching the rescue left her distraught.

"Seeing the little one wriggling and groaning as the pipe was torn apart bit by bit wrings my heart ... You've lived through the hardest moment in your life and your future will definitely be smooth," she said.

There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned, often shortly after birth.

The problem is attributed to factors such as young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society which puts greater value on boys or China's strict family planning rules

I think it's still a bit taboo in china to be an unmarried mother so perhaps she wasn't thinking straight...plus she would have been losing a hell of a lot of blood. I'm not excusing it but at least she did alert the authorities....

This is a very traumatic incident and it makes me so sad to see such young and innocent people suffer like this. Unfortunately because of government policies it leads to young children to be left abandoned in the most shocking ways. I do hope that they find a suitable home for this baby and to live a happy life.

It happens everywhere in the world though, so it's not necessarily the 1 child policy that can be blamed. They find babies in dumpsters in every country. Hopefully the kid will be alright, i think they said he has a fractured skull, hopefully that doesn't mean permanent brain damage.

I would have thought the mental state of the woman may have been the biggest factor here. She was in denial at being pregnant, for all we know she may have been attacked?
The shock of the birth would have caused mental trauma too.

The woman has been subjected to significant public pressure since she gave birth while sitting on a toilet and her baby became stuck in the sewer system.

As the 5lb (2.3kg) boy was cut from the four-inch (10cm) wide pipe, the woman, who raised the alarm, did not initially come forward to say she was his mother.

She subsequently told police that she had tried desperately to save the child and stop it from slipping into the pipe at her apartment in Jinhua, eastern China, but had failed.

The rescue made headlines around the world but earned the 22-year-old, who is single and had hidden her pregnancy, a lot of criticism.

Baby 59, who was named after the incubator number in which he was placed at Pujiang People's Hospital, has fully recovered from the two-hour ordeal and is now living with his grandparents.

The grandfather, who collected the child from the hospital on Thursday, told the Modern Gold Daily newspaper that his daughter had "suffered a lot because of public pressure" and had not had sufficient time to recover from giving birth.

He told the newspaper: "Now the baby is healthy and carrying on with its life the entire family thanks everyone for their help, along with those who cared for the child. We will use all our love to protect the baby as it grows older.

"We ask society to give our family a quiet living environment."

Police have found the man that the mother claims is the father of the child but would need to carry out a DNA test to confirm paternity.

Policeman Zhang Jianbo told the state-run China News Network: "Although the mother says she has found the father, we need to be sure … he is not sure if he is the father, and requested a DNA test.

"He said that if the baby was his he would take responsibility for it."

Despite early speculation that the baby was flushed down the toilet on purpose, police said that he fell into the pipe by accident, and that the mother will not face prosecution as she did not drop him on purpose.

Chinese babies born out of wedlock are sometimes abandoned because of social and financial pressures.

The country's one-child policy can also mean heavy fines for couples who have more than one baby.
