Nigeria have passed the ‘Jail All The Gays’ law, punishing not only gay sex but gay people, today (30 May).

It bans same-sex marriage, outlaws anyone from forming organizations supporting gay rights, and sets up prison terms of up to 14 years.

Approved by Nigeria’s House of Representatives in a voice vote, the bill will be sent to President Goodluck Jonathan for him to sign into law.

Under the bill the Senate passed in November 2011, openly gay people would be imprisoned whether or not they have sex.

Anybody who knows somebody who is gay will have to tell the authorities or they could go to jail for five years.

Any same-sex couple who got married would be punished by up to 14 years prison and 10 for anyone else involved in the ceremony. Even wedding guests could be jailed.

And ‘any person who directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships’ would also get a 10 year sentence.

While Gay Star News could not immediately obtain a copy of the version passed by the House of Representatives. If there are changes, a joint committee of lawmakers will have to go over the individual differing clauses before sending it to the president.

If there are significant changes, it may have to go back to the Senate to be passed there once again.

The US and the UK governments have threatened to cut aid to the African country if it passes the bill.

Gay sex has long been banned in Nigeria, punished by prison in the south and the death penalty in the north.

Bisi Alimi, a Nigerian gay activist, told GSN he was ‘shocked’ and ‘heartbroken’ by the bill’s passing.

He said: ‘The time the vote was supposed to happen was November last year and they didn’t do it and nobody was expecting it.

‘There has been lots of political instability in the last few days. It was Democracy Day in Nigeria and there are lots of questions about the legitimacy of the president and the House of Representatives.

‘It is a shocking way for them to try to get through those political problems by passing this bill.

‘If the president signs this bill it will be the first country in recent history to criminalize gay people in its constitution in this way.

‘And it will have a big impact. Uganda will be next, Sierra Leone will follow.’

They'd probably be treated like royalty over there.

Much better to have them stay where they are and wake up to the Rainbow House every morning.

Blame the government before you blame the people. Although they practice democracy, it doesn't mean that every person is a reflection of the laws they are made to follow.

It is arguably the most religious country in the world and unfortunately the government has a very old fashioned take on it.

I know if this was to happen in Uganda, the majority of the country would be disgusted but too afraid to speak up. They aren't as modern as the British and will not be for centuries. Its a shame that its happening but lets not blame an entire country for a choice the government made.

It's easy to say that, but the silence of the people can be very loud.

I would like to tell Mr David Cameron to stop all donations and let the suckers rot, but, there may be some people who are against the bill but cant say anything as they will be hauled in jail too.

I sometimes fail to believe we are in 2013, there shouldn't be issues like this in this day and age. It's disgusting how the world seems to take two steps forward and you get idiots pushing everyone one step back.

I hope the president's son turns out to be gay! Could you imagine...

I would agree with this, alot of the country is still in poverty so people have other issues to deal with as well.

And if you real my reply in full, you will notice I added at the end of the sentence that some may be against the bill, but there's nothing they can do about it... it is down to the government.

In this day and age, not even Nigeria should be so far behind the times.

All those people that say that they "understand" when muslims commit terrorist acts, if anyone has an excuse to commit terrorist acts it's gays. I hope the gays in Africa rise up and make 9/11 against the government buildings and religious buildings every day until this injustice is rectified.

If anyone has a justification to use terrorism, it's is gays. DESTROY the MOSQUES, DESTROY the CHURCHES, DESTROY the GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS. You are justified against this absolute discrimination.

Obviously i don't support violence in any form, i'm just pointing out how ****ing hypocritical the muslims are for saying they have a "reason" to use terrorism for their cause. If anyone has a justification to use terrorism it would be gays. Muslims are the OPPRESSORS, not the OPPRESSED.

Jesus.

About time someone took a stand against gays. They've had it way to easy for way too long.

It sickens me to see that the regime there are doing this just to distract from other issues rife within the country. I don't think such intolerance and discrimination will hold up in the long run though, so hopefully sanity will prevail.
