View Full Version : TiBB Album Club [Revival?]
Shaun

I was in the shower just now just lathering away at my ass cheeks when the most marvellous idea came to me. I was thinking of how I hadn't written many music reviews lately, and figured that maybe a TiBB thing that involved many willing participants, would be a nice idea.
The way it would work is thusly:
- Each week, an album released that week is chosen by a member for everyone to listen to over the course of the week.
- Then, at any point, each member of the club can submit a review of the album - it doesn't have to be that long or well-written, just a string of your thoughts on the album.
- The member must then also rate that album out of 10.
- I then gather all of the ratings and add them up, and divide them by the number of reviews, giving us a mean score for the album.
- Then, at the end of the year, we're left with a fairly decent gauge of TiBB's favourite albums of the year.
In the event that there's no album released in a week that anyone wants to listen to, members can use albums released earlier in the year :pipe:
But yeah... would anyone be interested?

That shouldn't be a problem, it'd be albums that are released that week (or before), so they should be on Spotify... *mumbles or other mediums mumbles*

Yes, do........
This is a really cool idea, not something I'd have the patience to do but I'm looking forward to reading everyone's reviews and discover some cool new music! I had a similar idea when I read this thread that perhaps you would run if it appealed to you Shaun; where there's a theme for a playlist and people could suggest contributions for it and we get a combined playlist matching whatever the theme may be?
Glenn.

Disclosure, Settle - I just finished listening to it, and I quite enjoyed the majority of the tracks. They weren't too over the top, or too sparse in their production.. it was just right. I think White Noise or You & Me would be my favourites. Good, solid album. 7/10.

Review:
I didnt think Id be overly enticed by "Settle" but Ive just been pleasantly surprised. I warmed to 'White Noise' on the album play through and enjoyed several tracks including: 'F For You', 'Confess To Me', 'When A Fire Starts To Burn' and of course 'Latch'. The album is very much about the different sounds created by Disclosure and his use of repetition. Overall the album does flows well and is very fun however there are a handful of tracks that are less exciting and would be difficult to identify compared to those that are much more successful.

Album - Settle
Rating - 5.5/10
It's strange, because from the singles Latch, White Noise and You & Me, I was expecting something huge here. All three are fantastic singles, and I thought that the album would follow suit. Not that it's a bad album, but I'm going to certainly have trouble in the future naming songs from it, given how alike they all are. The Intro and When a Fire Starts To Burn make for a solid start, and the three singles lifted above are insanely addictive and catchy, but the rest just isn't up to scratch... There are a couple of other HL's, but it starts to become a bit boring to listen to in the end.
Black Dagger
09-06-2013, 07:04 PM
Settle is really quite a solid album, although the first half of the album (bar White Noise) just destroys the latter half, however I don't have too many complaints about it, there is obviously the duff track, but then I've never had an album where I believe every song is quality, for me there will always be those fillers, but I did have my favourites on this album, F for You was a fantastic 'downbeat' track and When a Fire Starts To Burn will be consistently catchy for me, so Disclosure have done something right here with their debut album and they've made me thrive for me. I'll give it a solid 7/10. Oh and Jamie Woon has been one of my favourite male solo artists over the past couple of years, so added props on them collaborating, really nice sounds from them together.
Samuel.

I've let it sunk in for a couple of days now and there are definitely tracks that I keep wanting to hear on repeat whenever I'm listening to my iPod... the beats are excellent and play around enough to be just engaging enough as to avoid repetition (see: Justin Timberlake). There's a good variety of guest appearances but towards the end I think they try and throw in too many bigger names - the Jessie Ware and Jamie Woon tracks weren't the best, despite them being the two names I knew and liked the most. It's got a great deal of replay value, but doesn't really blow me away as something I overwhelmingly love. I'll give it an 8.5 though because it's perfectly executed for what it is.
Favourite tracks: Grab Her!; When a Fire Starts to Burn; White Noise; Second Chance; Voices

So after having 3 proper listen throughs of this i think i can finally give a proper review of it. Its starts off great with When A Fire Starts To Burn, although the song is about a minute longer than it should be, i still enjoyed it. Latch, F For You and White Noise are all also great which are right after Fire, so i thought i was in line for an amazing album. But like Jake said, towards the middle and end it slows down. Still enjoyed the album as a whole though. My favourite song on it is either White Noise or Confess To Me

I'm all for ambient music like this and it reminds me of being high as a kite in my uni days. Just lying there baked, away with the fairies and being captured by the random sounds and soft, subtle beats. However, in comparison to other music in this genre it is very forgettable and doesn't really capture much passion or imagination. We Work Nights was the only one I'd listen to again.

I'm gonna give this a 7/10. I think I'd enjoy it more if I were just lying around somewhere and not having to worry about anything  the production's really nice and serene, and I love the eastern influences.
But at the same time there are lapses of interest for me and it may be a little overegged. He's an excellent producer though.
Favourite tracks are 5950, Junk City II, We Work Nights and Brazil.

Gold Panda, Half Of Where You Live - 6.5/10. It was a nice album, but I'm struggling to say much more about it than that. It just didn't make much of an impression, and the tracks just seemed to flit in and out without impacting me all that much. That being said, I did like a few of them: 5950 (which is remarkably similar to Desired Constellation by Björk) being my favourite.. it was simple and quirky, and it grabbed my attention somewhat whilst I was listening, and it's perhaps one of the few tracks that I would listen to again (along with Junk City II, Brazil, and The Most Liveble City).

Have listened to HOWYL a few times now. It's grown on me slightly, but still a bit of a drab album (especially compared to some of their previous which I have also listened to this week). Saying that, We Work Nights is the best track and is actually one of my fave tracks at the moment.
Best time to listen: When on a comedown or high, or background music with friends at a BBQ.
Still 5/10

Kodaline, In A Perfect World - 6/10. It was a nice album. I liked the most of it, and my favourites were Love Like This and One Day (they were such lovely songs). But it seemed to falter massively around halfway through with all the tracks sounding so similar that for me, they pretty much melded into one. It's a shame really.
try this?

Not much I can say really... Each song doesn't diverse itself from the song before it, and in all honestly it was like going to a funeral.. Without the wake afterwards. Generally boring and disappointing
Samuel.

Album is full of personality. Haven’t heard anybody quite like Chance before, vocally or beats-wise. Very colourful album supported by great production and emotion from Chance, who comes off really sincere in his lyrics and subject matter. Can't fault it other than a slightly weak mid-section.
Favourite tracks: Smoke Again, Acid Rain, Everything’s Good
Least favourite: NaNa

Most people assume that I wouldn't like rap, but when it is done with thoughtful lyrics not just the crap about bitches and girls, then it holds a place in my heart since rap is a form of poetry that I listen to more then you all know. Really liking this mixtape... looking forward to replaying it and discovering new favourites. For now, though, the faves are Good Ass Intro, Cocoa Butter Kisses, Favorite Song + Chain Smoker. Not so keen on Lost. NaNa was a bit annoying too (though I'm sure it was intended to be).
The production of it reminds me a lot of Outkast... and is that a Portishead sample I hear on Everybody's Something :suspect:
I'm going to give it an 8.5.

Backtrack Review
Disclosure- Settle
I wasn't set alight with this album tbh. I found a couple of the songs a little samey and repetitive although there were a few songs I'd happily listen to again.
Favourite tracks were, Latch, White Noise, Voices, You and Me, Help Me Lose My Mind, and Boiling.
Worst track was When a Fire Starts to Burn. Literally give me a headache.
I'd give the album a 8/10

the majority of the tracks on this album are extremely dull and repetitive and unnecessary. there is just too much filler imo and i think if they got rid of half of the tracks it would have been a much better album. I absolutely adored cold earth and palace posy (easily two of the best songs i have heard all year) i also sort of enjoyed nothing is real, new seeds and come to dust (these three tracks stand out but are still nothing special)

I'll make it known before I cast my score that I am a Boards of Canada fan and I've had this album for almost a month hoping it'd be a grower. Unfortunately for me it's not. I dunno. I've read the critical acclaim about it and I can't say I agree. There's nothing really special or individual about this really.
There are so many unmemorable tracks for me, particularly in the middle I find myself losing interest with every listen and a lot of it blends together. With this sort of ambient music of gradual process I feel like the changes are too subtle to be particularly interesting.
That all being said I think the first 6 tracks are pretty good, Jacquard Causeway being a particular favourite, but there's none which I enjoyed near as much as Gyroscope, Music is Math or 1969 from Geogaddi [if you like these guys and wanna look at earlier stuff, I'd recommend this album].
On the whole I don't really enjoy it, but I'm not going to rate it too low as there's a great level of subtle craftsmanship there.
My rating [which I know I'll be frowned upon for but idc] will be 5.5
Shaun
10-07-2013, 07:17 PM
I really liked this album for the first half and then it just got a little repetitive and boring... for what it is, it's executed well, and is quite beautiful in a way, but I don't think I could handle it too often unless it was on in the background.
I'll give it a 6/10.

- AraabMuzik - The Remixes, Vol 1
or of course, if none of those interest you, something from earlier in the year (preferable a major release)

I think it's an almost flawless album, It's just really interesting and it's managed to hold my attention which is rare for me as I typically don't like a lot of rap. My favourite songs are I Am A God, Hold My Liquor, Black Skinhead and Blood On The Leaves.

Yeezus - 7
Album is entertaining, but it's weak by Kanye's standards. It feels disjointed (though maybe intentionally), and I'm finding myself not playing it a whole lot.
Still a good album, though. Blood On The Leaves is one of the best tracks this year.

Just finished.
Tomorrow's Harvest, Boards of Canada - 4.5/10. It didn't make an impression on me really and I didn't really have much of a reaction to any of the tracks at all. It was just completely, and inoffensively bland. That said though, I did like Reach For The Dead a fair bit.
Yeezus, Kanye West - 8.5/10. I loved it. It's so vicious and raw from start to finish, which just made me focus right away. I adore all the tracks (apart from Bound 2) and it really is great. It's like 808s And Heartbreak but packed with pure rage, and it really works a lot better than that sort of dejected resentment that 808s was full of. However, it still doesn't top MBDTF for me, mostly because my love for Runaway, Monster, All Of The Lights and Devil In A New Dress are all far greater than anything on Yeezus (although that might change in the future with subsequent listens).

Yeezus - 8.5
Not his best by a long shot, and a few of the tracks failed to grab me, but the ones that did are excellent. It's an interesting new direction for him and the lyrics and production are pretty astounding.
Favourite tracks: Blood on the Leaves, Black Skinhead, Hold My Liquor, I Am a God & New Slaves.
