Comedian Russell Brand was invited to appear on MSNBC's Morning Joe yesterday, ostensibly to talk about his controversial world comedy tour Messiah Complex.
But instead, co-host Mika Brzezinski and panelists Katty Kay and Brian Shactman preferred to make jokes at Brand's expense, pretend they couldn't understand what he was saying, and refer to him in the third person even though he was sitting right there.
Oh, and at one point, start calling him by a different name.
At about the 5:30 mark, Brand decides he's had enough goofing around and seizes control of the show, demonstrating to the "journalists" how professionals conduct interviews and deliver news.
Of course, Russell Brand being Russell Brand, he would likely be remiss if he didn't at least once during the program call Brzezinski a "shaft grasper" and advise her to "lose the [wedding] ring."
All in all, pretty decent television.
I don't really consider myself a fan but in interviews and writing he's genius.

I have no idea what any of them were talking about.
So Brand was mainly upset over the other guy saying he couldn't understand his accent on the radio? That seemed to be when he got defensive, and then the other British woman started calling him WIlly Brant i'm not sure why...
what a cluster ****.
I do think he was being a sexist jerk saying that the woman looked like she was grabbing a dick just because she was holding a bottle. what was that all about?
he was also being a hypocrite saying they shouldn't talk about what people are wearing because it's superficial when just a few minutes earlier he was commenting on that woman's hair.

Must be the whole being a professional comedian thing.
I love Brand. The aesthetic appearance and turn of phrase combine to put whoever is under his microscope on edge which works fantastically as a comedic device to provoke when he is in situations like this. His ability to deconstruct the formality of it and reshape it as he sees fit is proof positive of his appeal. And it really makes just complete **** of some of his duller middle English detractors who moan over the top of the Mail that he is nothing more than a dick in hand shock jock.
I agree with Shaun though, stand up is not his best vehicle. Writing and TV shows [Ponderland, for instance] seem to be more his forte.

Russell Brand is on Radio5 Richard Bacon
from 2PM tomorrow
I assume the Willy Brand thing was an unfunny failed joke about him being a renowned shagger. When I read the description of the video I thought it was going to be more brutal than that, he just exposed how incompetent they are. I think a lot of American news anchors, especially in entertainment news, are terrible at their jobs; and this video highlights that.

Let's also remember that this show is on at 6AM on a cable channel.
I think he just got butt hurt because she said something about not following pop culture, and Brand was basically indignant that he wasn't being treated like an A-List superstar. He really thinks he's Brad Pitt or something.

I like brand, but the sexual aggression is wearing a little thin.

Maybe, but I think it's pretty rude/bad presenting to openly say you don't know who your guest is. I mean, even if she personally hasn't a clue, the guy was married to Katy Perry, he's been in Hollywood films, he's a global comedian - it's pretty ignorant to say the least, she could have quite easily not said she didn't know who he was but she chose to do that right at the start of the interview and I think that was rude of her.

Really? They referred to him as 'he' at least twice while he was less than two foot away, in the very first few seconds she completely disrespects him by saying she's never heard of him. I think he handled it impeccably. He made light of the situation but at the heart were a number of telling observation about the hosts and the state of these news channels. He was never overly aggressive but you can tell he wasn't entirely joking. Well played Russell.

Yes exactly and to those saying he shouldn't have went on about shaft grabbing etc, what about them referring to him as "Willy" or commenting on what he was wearing?
