THE 5/0 EXPERIENCE

Disclaimer : THE 5/0 EXPERIENCE is for entertainment purposes only. And to provoke discussion of course. Which I hope I will get but whatever. I'll follow it through regardless. I never normally do things like this. Also I will try and not have too many bands/artists getting repeat entries but it will inevitably occur okay so deal with it. Expect a lot of misery towards the top end.

OASIS//champagne supernova

g3C7DECI0jU

sounds like.
The twelfth can of Tenants.

it's here because.
One of TiBB's favorite bands narrowly sneaks in the backdoor of the chart like some unfamous Liam at a soup tent. Here give us a lash of that, mate, yeah. I used to be in Beady Eye what were it. God I hate Oasis. And I like Oasis. They're Oasis like aren't they. You gotta roll with it.

Champagne Supernova is their finest hour. A genuinely sprawling piece of work that seems to conjure nostalgia for times that you never quite got to live through because you were a little nipper I guess. I like it. There. I like Oasis a bit.

Liam's still a prat though. He's not a legend he's a coked up goofball who makes his brother appear like some mild mannered historian.

DIE ANTWOORD//I Fink U Freeky

8Uee_mcxvrw

sounds like.
The apocalypse.

it's here because.
Shuffling in like Clubland for psych wards comes South African act Die Antwoord with the surreal, stomping, absolutely delightful 'I Fink U Freeky'. The expertly cut video provides great fodder to a tune that delivers with hooks, snarls and Yo-Landi Vi$$er's often quite ... cute ... vocal delivery.

Oblivious is the best word I can use to describe it really. It's oblivious to everything, including itself. It'd be absolute nonsense if it wasn't for the fact that it kicks all manner of multicultural arses. Go on give it a whirl right now. I can PM you half a tab and we'll all surge on through the evening.

2mlpxOaQinE&list=FLHbQkVCGCB8C_Ig2twclU0w&index=68

sounds like.
A tin of celebrations. Haha **** you there are no sweets in that, just lots of Amyl Nitrate!

it's here because.
Scotland's favorite daughter Jimmy Somerville takes his gay socialist brigade to an abandoned warehouse next to have a good ol' time in the name of freedom and having a good time. The vocal harmonies at the start may be the best bit of the entire thing but it's just full of lovelyness, really.

There's going to be a lot of this. I'll post a video, try and be funny, and justify my reasoning by saying how nice the song is.

BLINK 182//I Miss You

s1tAYmMjLdY

sounds like.
Your emo soul is going straight to hell.

it's here because.
Because it's a poignant, melancholy masterstroke from a band I don't usually listen to that often but I imagine sing a lot about poo and what happens when your skateboard hits a stone and you fall off it.

I'm being facetious of course. Blink are a perfectly fine, altogether fun band but J-E-S-U-S does this stand away from anything else they've ever done. It's beautiful. The video is beautiful. If you believe in love and being a bit mushy sometimes then take your hand off your dick and hand me a tissue :(.

MANIC STREET PREACHERS//Design For Life

TfEoVxy7VDQ

sounds like.
A call to arms. Or Welsh people with big ideas.

it's here because.
It's not very cool to like the Manics, is it? Ever since Richie The Missing Guy ****ed off they've been a mixed bag of ambitious ideas having to find their home in decidedly average albums. And nobody likes Nicky Wire. Maybe because he tries too hard to be contentious. Or maybe because he's **** at putting on his make up.

As a singles band they're just fine though. This, their anthem, is a chiming cornerstone of nineties alternative - at least on this side of the Atlantic. Your mano whatshisface has a nice voice and the drums THUMP like a sheep thrown down a coal mine that Thatcher ruined.

Pot Noodle.

EEK A MOUSE//Ganja Smuggling

PyEwTM0n04c

sounds like.
Waking and baking. The finest way to live.

it's here because.
Because it's a nice, bouncy fun reggae track about everyone's favorite plant. I was going to put Peter Tosh here because I love his Bush Doctor album but then I gots conflicted because I don't know how much space I'll have in this mother for reggae and in all honesty Peter Tosh is a bit scary [he's the military rasta that offset Marley's softer approach in the Wailers. I think he thought everyone including LSD and wooly jumpers were the devil].

Plus it's in Saints Row 2. I loved blaring Four Twenty Radio whilst running over people without personalities. Yeaaaaaah mon.

Five girls crashing to earth in bubbles. One of them can sing.

it's here because.
Look I'm going to throw you worms some scraps that you'll recognise every now and then, okay? But alas that's the beauty of Girls Aloud. It's one of the few bands that the two thirds of you I despise will have heard of thus far and the other third of you will totally get it too because despite they're American Pop Factor thingy origins they're still an excellent pop act who dominated the noughties.

This ones got the Ibiza synths going on, Sarah's voice being fed through a Commodore 64's soundchip as usual and Nadine providing a terrific crescendo with one of the most absurd pop lyrics ever let out into the open air.

Beautiful robots dancing alone. Right.

sounds like.
The score to TiBB : The Scott Story

it's here because.
The type of electronic stuff I'll pepper in sparingly because I don't want to risk any sort of alienation. Well ... extreme alienation.

I don't listen to as much psytrance as I used to. Mostly because the comedowns were a bit of a **** off. But this is about as mainstream as the genre is likely to get with a THIS IS A ROCK GUITAR guy and some simply, catchy vocals that cause all these Israeli people to run into a wall in the video.

PET SHOP BOYS//Suburbia

sounds like.
Dah do do doo, danna do do do, in sub urb ee ah.

it's here because.
You might be surprised to learn that I don't love the Boys as much as you'd think I would. Maybe it's because they got the massive British press acceptance Depeche Mode deserved instead. But where Depeche innovated and done the whole Einstruzende Neubauten thing in between churning out pop stalwarts, Pet Shop Boys just do the pop stalwarts really. And that's fine but they're basically good at that one thing.

Wait why are my complaining? Okay so we've parked our S.U.V's in Suburbia for this entry. It's probably the only time you'll see Pet Shop Boys on this countdown. No way are they getting in twice. This is what they are most reliable at - belting out a super cheery, ultra catchy, fat sounding pop monster.

It's just that that's all they do really. And that's alright as well. It's not like I'm a bitter person or anything.

Bubblegum and hotpants.

We all need a song that makes us want to be a hooker. This is mine. My enduring fascination with Lovefoxx aside CSS must be one of the funnest groups around. They preside over that part of your mind that sometimes just gets a hard on for this high energy, trashy sound and candyfloss aesthetic.

They do this one with Ssion who I assume is the bloke in the video who looks like paedo Freddie Mercury. It's bouncy bouncy. Can you feel the bounce?

I play it at gatherings in my house all the time and every lad sings along to the bits about lipstick and not giving a ****. It's fierce. There. I used the word 'fierce' in an honest context.

it's here because.
Also not as big a fan of the sixties as you might imagine, given the decades incredible importance. Jefferson Airplane are great at the psychedelic rock thing I wanted to represent too but the fact that White Rabbit gets played constantly in clip shows put me off it. Every time a BBC Three documentary shows a clip of a hippy in the mud trying to feed a burrito to his stash tin there it is. White Rabbit.

Santana? Wicked, though. This could trip you out all on it's own. The pace and instrumentation on offer are almost out of this world. Almost. Watch it with the video. This was the groups first time taking acid and it shows. Their facial contortions are priceless and you can see them struggling to control the rhythm. Somehow they do. That's what this is. A group of tripped out men trying to control a rhythm. Like snake charming.

Special mention goes to the drummer. Look at him. He's having the best time anybody has ever had.

It's a shame really that people don't give Northern Line their due praise. Whilst Boyzone, Westline, Take That et all have shot to the moon in the realms of boy band stardom it's been up to Northern Line to hold down the fort with their catchy lyrics, cheeky videos and striking compositions. They are craftsmen. Here's to the boys.

FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON//We Have Explosive

Xc9l7pygQRo

sounds like.
Electroshock treatment.

it's here because.
Play it now as you read. It's a quick hit so you might like it, who knows. Future Sound Of London is one of those dozens of British electronica acts I got into through the videogame series Wipeout. This one - from Wipeout 2097 - is real head music. A fast paced romp that encourages you to draw pictures in your own head instead of letting psychedelics feed you them. As their name implies Future Sounds do that whole looking at 2015 from 1995 thing. Listening to this tune to me doesn't conjure images of dancefloors but rather of tube stations, advertising billboards and those shiny suits from The Running Man. Beats the pulp of of Sash!, amiright?

Et cetera. Anyway it's a great tune and that's why it's here, isin't it.

One of the better parts of Donnie Darko.

it's here because.
I heard my dad listening to this song I'm sure a gazillion times before it fully resonated with me when I heard it in Richard Kelly's dumb, overrated but nonetheless entertaining Donnie Darko. There underpinning Jake Gyllenhaal having a cycle around at dawn looking vulnerable and sexy was where it first grabbed me. I was reminded by ever dour Ian McCulloch of course that I had heard his haunting intoning before but man ... such a good track.

The line "faith, up against your will" is amazingly powerful in this vague sort of way - that's the song right there - and apparently it's the line Ian had in his head that spurned him to write the whole damn thing. I'm glad he did.

sounds like.
Nostalgia.

it's here because.
Nostalgia seems like a cheap way out. It's the easiest way I can describe so much of this music which seems to paint my heart in a colour that I cannot name yet which is oddly familiar. I first heard this song when me and my dad used to drive to the hospital to see sick mummy back when I was a smallie. Mummy is okay now thankfully but this song made those moments bittersweet. You always remember hospital visits, don't you. More often than not they're miserable affairs but there is that word again. Resonance.

It twinkles like any good pop song should yet kicks me in the gut at the same time. How I love it so.

NICKI MINAJ//Pound The Alarm

vdrqA93sW-8

sounds like.
Another curveball.

it's here because.
I'm not taking the piss, either. Trinidad art attack Nicki's first outing in this countdown is her only one. Forget the the lush Superbass, the nauseously catchy Starships or the instant turn off ego massage that was the otherwise blissed out Freedom. Pound The Alarm is her best song and was last summers real summery sounding song.

It's bright, fun it's got riddim and it might be the best pop song since that part of all our lives where Lady GaGa was a pretty good Madonna getting screwed by eurosynths. It also soundtracked about two months I spent last year in the same gay club every night of the week, letting forty year old men buy me shots of aftershock on the promise that I would go home with them.

I didn't. I was still dancing to this. I even own two T-Shirts. Plasticity has never been this much fun.

THE JAM//Going Underground

AE1ct5yEuVY

sounds like.
The real cool Britannia.

it's here because.
Paul Weller was a man on a mission. An epoch unto himself the original Modfather was the prince of no nonsense, well dressed, somewhat clean living, cut through the B.S. How refreshing compared to some of the cartoon psychopaths that often reside in and out of the charts.

A hero, in short. His solo albums are bloody good too but they don't really crack the list. At least no particular song does. This Jam number storms in just as the chart heats up and we race to the halfway point though owing to how bloody infectious it is.

The soundtrack to TiBB's Fritzlfest season, too. What more could a girl want?

sounds like.
Hearts pounding against one another.

it's here because.
It's here because it's one of the best vocal dance tracks ever produced, that's why. Decidedly mainstream but still with an edge. It's like being chased by a rabid dog who wants to spike all your drinks and get you into a dodgy club somewhere in Brixton. Plus I have to remember to get some electronic that doesn't quite crack the top 25 out of the way before soldering on.

I haven't planned this out that well, see.

RADIOHEAD//Nice Dream

uDLkaISa-B8

sounds like.
Morning walks in the park.

it's here because.
Might as well get started on Radiohead - a band I sometimes lie awake thinking about. Beyond the fanboy choice of Depeche Mode and even beyond the official answer - the importance choice of The Beatles - these five unassuming lads from Oxford probably have the best band ever to walk the earth. Go on then, whose better. They change, challenge destroy and rebuild rocknroll all at once with a wry smile as if y'know ... they're just messing about with a children's toy.

The Bends have all their first important moments and this one is a corker. It's got that Radiohead hallmark of going from a quite blissed out sound to suddenly turning on you as if you poked it too much by daring to continue listening. A ripe fruit that bears endless repeat listening and an early career highlight.

The placings are somewhat hazy up until about 20 on, I'll admit. Meaning they are made on the fly. Then again I do prefer that song and have listened to it more and would put it on a desert island disc over the other two you mentioned.

A certain amount of judging songs on their own terms and spreading out the genres comes into play as well. Otherwise the bottom end of the chart would be loaded with some very good pop songs whilst the top 25 would be completely wrist cutting fodder.

TOOL//Sober

hglVqACd1C8

sounds like.
A horror ride withdrawal.

it's here because.
A lot of bands advertise themselves as downbeat and a lot more get perceived as downbeat but whereas in many cases this is frivolous to the often quite catchy, smiles-behind-the-madness sound pallet offered up, Tool actually do sound like they mean it. They're definitely not happy about something and even though I enjoy them so it does vaguely seem whilst listening like I'm being reprimanded for my choices. Chastised for my sins.

The downtuned guitars are reminiscent of grunge meeting industrial on a park bench circa 1992 but Tool really is Maynard James Keenan. A name like a suspect from a Thomas Harris book and one of rocknroll's finest vocals to boot. He manages to scream ... quietly.

Brilliantly haunting and other such superlatives.

it's here because.
Reservations about putting a relatively young and unabashedly hipster tune on the chart? **** all, really.

Grimes floats in your ears like some sonic ghost and refuses to leave, lighting up your optimism for how good music today can sound and validating a largely post rock world where ethereal, majestic sounds can be arranged in a studio using apple macs and minikorgs.

EMINEM//Stan

aSLZFdqwh7E

sounds like.
Every twelve year old's bedroom at the turn of the century.

it's here because.
Still hit and miss king Eminem's finest moment by a very large stretch. Even Dido is used to great effect in it and if you're still not sold on the big D well the video provides her getting driven into a lake for your amusement.

Eminem's delivery alternating between the two characters in this song is spot on from the neurotic, troubled Stan to the composed Professor Eminem answering his fan mail. The subject matter is *sigh* haunting as well and really it's just a great concept song. Concept rap.

The groove that underpins the whole thing is the real attraction though. That droning, hypnotic bass over the relaxed, trip-hop-on-ambien beat is mesmerizing all these years on.

Stu
03-07-2013, 06:46 PM
Another ten down. From here on in it's a no holds barred, concentrated, calculated race to numero uno. I've loved all the songs so far and would not consider any of them bottom loading filler but from here on out it really is an elite selection. At least in my mind. You may find some of the placings funny but bear in mind this is a personal countdown, not a definitive treatise on which songs are better. Anyway speaking of elite :

Really enjoyed that latest batch of songs - and for years I've had that Rasmus song rotating in my head every now and then without ever knowing who sang it, all I had was "GUILTY WHOAAAAOOOOOOOH" on repeat haha

THE WONDER STUFF//Here Comes Everyone

PHohSL4WXJQ

sounds like.
Partying in a field.

it's here because.
The Wonder Stuff are the first band I ever fell in love with and the first band I ever really heard I guess. Tapes of them used to be stashed all over my aunts house like hidden treasures and I would uncover the history of my first real musical band my reading the line notes obsessively.

Though they faded out fast and ruined their reputation forevermore by doing the cancerous "Dizzy" with Vic Reeves I and about twelve other people still remember them as an amazingly fun, energetic, hippyish band from the west country.

The Hup! and Never Loved Elvis albums are more than worth looking into. Consider yourself told.

Butterflies in your stomach.

it's here because.
No Ordinary Morning might be the most delicate, beautiful track to have come out of the nineties dance explosion and the mostly four to the floor groups that it produced.

It's something they would lay over a death scene in Skins. Emotional almost to the point of cheese but oh so very good. Listen to the warm pad sounds. You hear that? That's just superior sonic texture.

Sounds like I could ****ing CRY WITH JOY.

it's here because.
That's me trying to hit the high notes at 00:35. We were lonely in those days. Eternal Flame is genuinely one of the most stirring tracks ever though, and that's why it sits here just as the list is getting hot. Forget Atomic Kitten ... The Bangles were way better and way hotter. I'm not sure which wanky terms to dig up to describe my love for this one but here you go. It's great.

..just one of the most emotional songs ever, I adore it.....The Bangles weren't really thought of as credible artists by music critics at the time but what did they know, they produced some good songs..Eternal Flame, Manic Monday and Walk Like an Egyptian were all big hits and well deserved to be...

They're actually from the west midlands. I'd say 8 legged groove machine is definitely their best album. I saw a Miles gig last year - he did a great acoustic version of circlesquare.

Seriously thought the West Midlands and West Country were one and the same. Oh well. Thanks for clearing that up! I do a terrible acoustic version of Circlesquare.

MORRISSEY//Everyday Is Like Sunday

d0LeL9BUPtA

sounds like.
Fey, bashful and overbearing all at once. Typical Moz, then.

it's here because.
It's a shame Morrissey's awe inspiring ability to make weird, sweeping statements about pigs and stuff has detracted ever so slightly from his superb back catalog of albums like Viva Hate, Your Arsenal and return to form You Are The Quarry. Never at risk of approaching the majesty of The Smith's discography but a stellar body of work nontheless.

The most annoying thing is how bloody serious people take him. Read the article, write him off as a secluded, heartless has been and forget the tunes. He's only Morrissey for christ sake. He's an old coot. He means well when he says the genocide of babies is nothing compared to the guilty taste you get from KFC chicken or something.

Every Day Is Like Sunday stirs with it's plucky strings and quietly rousing lyrics. It pulls off the typical Moz/Smiths contradiction of having quite sweet music offset by desolate, dreary subject matter.

THE PRODIGY//Start The Dance

svJvT6ruolA

sounds like.
A clarion call for nutters everywhere.

it's here because.
"Oi Liam you got some pukka tunes mate but here's the thing see you got no show. Me and my mate here will chum you up and help you out. I'll dance like I'm off me 'ead on pills and he'll shout "where's my ****in' people?" over all your songs. Great stuff."

That's my story of how The Prodigy started and I'm sticking too it. The Essex rave champions turned career dance monstrosity have achieved stunning longevity and respectability in the often fickle, ever changing world of dance music. Infectious to the point of grabbing anyone and pulling them in regardless of taste, they simply have an awesome sound and if you know anybody that doesn't like them you should probably sever ties.

But which tune to represent them in this countdown. Firestarter was the breakthrough but is a bore in comparison to Breath and Smack My Bitch Up, both from the 1996 smash Fat Of The Land. Omen is too fresh. Charly and No Good too representative of their fun but sign-of-things-to-come rave days.

It's Start The Dance, isn't it. A total rise up anthem designed to bring down your thin, cheap bedroom walls on a Friday night over a few cheap tins.

They're still going strong as a live act you must see before you die. I've had the pleasure. Keith still looks like he hasn't quite come back from that first Glasto, either.

NYM//Lesser Known Good

Plxzf9Z0KY0

sounds like.
The kind of journey that ends in a hot bath.

it's here because.
A rather anonymous entry from an unknown producer who aint even internet famous. I'm confident in my love for this tune though. Confident in it's twenty four placing. It's just one of the most loveliest pieces of music I've ever heard. The first time I heard it was when my friend played it for me over some smokes at his house down by the train station as the sun was coming up. His window overlooks the waterfront. It was magic, man.

I don't know how else to sell it to you, really. It's a really unknown quality. It's just a fantastic piece of ambient grooveage. Don't be tab surfing if you plan on spinning it. Open your ears and stick with it to the end.

It might have been just the drugs.

WARPAINT//Warpaint

sWVOGaakRE8

sounds like.
The best thing going today.

it's here because.
I think I'm getting to see Warpaint at Electric Picnic this year. A real treat considering it's exactly the type of band I fall for, and their eponymous song on display here is a great example of why.

The subtle intro kind of hands you into this haunted house of tribal drone where the tantalizing vocals lull you into a fall sense of security. The Peter Hook New Order Resonant Post Punk Bass Thingy™ dances around you saying go on, it'll be alright. It builds and builds and builds to a thrilling guitar cut fest climax. A bit like good sex. And they're sexy out too. In that way that they probably only shower once a week and are harboring some dodgy tattoos up their skirts.

Anyway. Here's Warpaint. I'm too tired to write good.

LITTLE DRAGON//Ritual Union

q0pQOt5VUVQ

sounds like.
Going around on a Wurlitzer or something, I dunno.

it's here because.
Because it's the best tune from the excellent Little Dragon, a bit of a hipster oddity and the only four piece from Gothenburg that I can claim to name.

Ammi likes this one, I know that. I posted it in ... some random music thread awhile back ... I think ... and she said she loved it. Trust Ammi on this one.

I said to her I found it somewhat satanic and she didn't pick up on it but I'll continue that discourse here. Something sounds very evil in it. It's a bit of a twisted tune. The weird bouncing electronic noise that follows "got me again-en-en-en" is quite dark, amongst other things. But it's part of the appeal I think. It's a quirky, wonderful tune that must be at this point my most repeated tune ever.

The vocals in it are superb too. The kind of vocals you know you can't replicate but feel duty bound to squelch out anyway as you go about your flat hoovering up dead spiders before your cooler friends come and introduce you to the next Gothenburg four piece who will blow your ****ing mind.
