For some reason that word really grinds my gears. If you use that word, I would like to know why?

It's just a harmless colloquialism.

..yeah, I agree Jess but then I generally prefer things just to be called what they're called, it's a personal thing I have...

Yeah, maybe it's just that, I don't have anything against people who say it, it just doesn't make sense to me. It's like people who say "biccies" instead of "biscuits". :joker:

People who say yeah instead of yes annoy me... kidding.
I say chippy instead of fish and chip shop, sarnie is used loads in Yorkshire.

..haha...I would get really annoyed when people used 'baby talk' with my children..don't call it a 'doggy', it's a dog and much easier to say...I think I just like the proper word but I guess that's just me...
I say sarnies, it is just something said here a lot and so you get used to saying it. Sorry, but going to carry on using the word, you will just have to hate on me for doing so :D

I'm exactly the same. My mum has an anecdote from when I was about 3, when I was asked if I liked the gee-gees in a field. I told him I din't know what a gee-gee was, but I thought the horses were pretty.

how can sarnie be "short for sandwich" when it takes the exact same effort to say (2 syllables) :suspect: (same for chippy/chip shop)
We all the chip shop the chippy never called a sandwich a sarnie in my life though.
