Its a fascinating case, things like this fascinate me. There are some really interesting documentaries about it on sites like youtube. Easily the most harrowing thing i've heard though is this audio recording that was discovered by the FBI
An audio recording made on November 18, 1978, at the Peoples Temple compound in Jonestown, Guyana immediately preceding and during the mass suicide or murder of over 900 members of the cult.
I strongly advise you don't listen to this if you are easily disturbed.

I watched a documentary on it. It's macabrely fascinating.
Also it's were the term about people drinking the koolaid comes from.

People following this cult in the US followed their leader down to British Guyana after a few years he decided it was time for them all to die so he poisoned the punch and 900 people died.

There was this celeb guy call Jim Jones I think, and he had ideas of starting his own kinda perfect town/country. So he started what was kinda a cult, he recruited people in the states and the UK. And Jim Jones was a kinda famous, like he was on a talk show or two in the states.
After he had loads of followers, a few hundred, he started a camp/town place, with kinda hippy thinking that they grown their own stuff (like the community in that movie the Beach).
A documentary crew go to the crappy country the camp is, (africa or south america). And people in the camp secretly hand notes to the film crew and they ask for help. So the crew decide to leave and alert the authorities but before they get on their plane, Jim Jones and a few guys show up with guns and try kill them, I think most escape alive.
He then goes back to the camp, and they have a kinda prayer mediation thing and there is poisoned koolaid (american soda pop drink). The guys with guns make sure everyone drinks it, and hundreds die, the Jones guy kills himself too.

You never heard about it?
I went through a phase of watching like dozens of docs on it for a few days a couple of years ago, it's scary.

I remember thinking it was fake - it sounds like a plot from a book or something.
Another interesting fact being that it was the biggest loss of American life, until 2001.

Also - it wasn't that he poisoned them and they didn't know, it was basically a mass suicide.
He gathered them all, poisoned the punch (as you guys said) but ensured that the children drank it first - quite twisted, his idea was if the children died first then the parents would have nothing else to live for and would be more inclined to kill themselves aswell.
It obviously worked. I remember watching an interview though from a parent who managed to run away just after her two children drank it, hearing her describe it was chilling.

I find it crazy that a House representative who went to investigate was murdered there though. It's just so...unbelievable in every respect.
That's really shocking, I'd never heard of this before either. I always question the intelligence of people that get sucked into cults though; I always think they're either a sandwich short of a picnic or the cult is offering them some kind of financial/physical/emotional security that they aren't getting by themselves. So very sad...
