View Full Version : Flying Question
Hey everyone,
am dead excited, tomorrow morning I'm flying to America for a week! going to be looking at some universities over there as well as doing some good old site seeing! it'll be my first time flying so am so nervous though I hate to admit it!
have a few questions about flying...
1- What have people's flying experiences been like? Be honest.
2- May seem a stupid question but are you allowed to have deodorant cans [like lynx] in your carry on luggage or suitcase?
Thanks :)

Flying will be totally fine so don't worry about it. Having a book to read may make the time go faster.
Not so sure about the deodorant situation.

Hmm okay- thanks :)

once flying from Austria we got caught in a thunder storm, a lightening bolt hit us and we sat in darkness for the remaining hour of the flight, apparently we were very lucky.
Anyway are you planning on studying in America? it very expensive unless you get a scholarship.

You'll be fine. Once you've settled on the plane everything should be okay...take off is the worst part but it's not too bad to endure.
Have a good time in America. :)

Love flying Joe best way to travel,I've never had a bad experience, you dont even know your moving once your up there, where abouts in America are you going?
..you'll be fine Joe, you'll probably be really excited when you're on the plane..I think you can take roll on deodorants and small toiletries on the plane in your hand luggage..100ml maximum and they must be in a small sealed see through bag though..but I think they provide stuff like that on long flights anyway and you'll watch movies when you're in the air as well, so the time will go quite quickly..have a great time...

I'm planning on studying English Literature and Drama there- think I may have a scholarship sorted.

I'm going to New York first of all to look at New York University, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and others!

Its pretty rough smuggle a bottle of brandy on board and drink yourself unconscious in the first hour of flight its much easier
and
They sell deodorant in the usa dont bother taking it.

2013 has seen an increase in plane related accidents, fortunately though they don't usually lead to many deaths so you'll be grand anyway.
I'm quite jealous, would love to be heading to America. Have fun man.

Only prob with only going for a week is by the time you adjust to the time difference it time to come home !
They'll have an in flight film that passes a couple of hrs and the taxi in from Kennedy to Manhatten ain't cheap either !
I bumped into Richie Blackmore (rainbow) and rest of band in a bar there and they got me so pissed i couldn't leave hotel room for 2 days - alcholic poisoning !

Wow Americas a bit ambitious for your first time flying
When we went to florida I think it took about 10 hours or so?
Anyway, take some sucky sweets for taking off and landing. Flying is fine. Its boring though, especially long haul flights. Don't get the plane food if you don't like eating cardboard..take sandwiches and stuff instead.

I've flown to the States on my own a few times...I actually prefer to fly alone (only have to worry about myself). I never move from my seat once Ive say down and I never take my seatbelt off... I always have a few drinks and take a sleeping pill on long haul...just be careful you don't wake up with your head on the person next to you (as I have done). I've never really had a bad experience either, I'm just not a fan. My brother is a pilot on long haul flights and he has only ever had one near disaster LOL. Very little really to worry about. Just relax and try to enjoy it....you'll love NY.

that's the main thing I'm worried about- my ears!
I've been told to chew gum an swallow hard whilst it's taking off!

Sucky sweets are better.
Sometiems they offer you some on the plane, but take your own incase they dont.

Yeah like Vicky said that's a hell of a flight for your first time  I thought 4 hour flights were long enough each year when going to Turkey but 9 hours to Florida last month proved me wrong
You can't take deodorant in your hand luggage though but you can in the suitcase which goes in the hold. Once you pass security though you can buy whatever you want in duty free and take it on board with you, they sell bulk alcohol/tobacco/aftershave etc. Duty free in itself is quite fun. What airport are you flying from?
I actually quite enjoy flying, I'm always apprehensive something could happen and flying to America only heightened that for obvious reasons but all in all it's fine. Some people hate take off and landing but I find it amazing looking out of the window and seeing everything looking small. It does hurt your ears though when they pop, that's the only bad and really irritating thing.
If you think you may get bored and aren't bothered about the in flight entertainment then I'd suggest not sleeping too much tonight so you'll be tired on board, you can sleep half the journey then.
Have fun though, I'm jealous...New York is somewhere I've always wanted to go :D

Take it off before the metal detector?
Theres a tray that you put all your coins/metal in before going through.

yeah I wasn't sure how much to sleep tonight, think I may have an early night tbh, I mean I don't need too much sleep so then i'll be able to enjoy more of the journey, i'm flying from heathrow!

oh okay, does metal include like plugs and everything cos obviously im taking chargers etc in my hand luggage not in my suitcase. super embarrassing taking a retainer out though!

Hand luggage goes through the machine on the belt..doesnt go through the metal detector.

ah okay sorry, haven't been to airport security before, only the Eurostar security.
with ears popping- is it anything like when they pop on the tube or Eurostar-or worse!?
Vicky.

Dunno, my ears have never popped as I always have boiled sweets and swallow like mad for the whole 5 mins or so it takes to take off/land

You'll have to empty your pockets and take your belt off (if you're wearing one) when you go through security, you just shove everything in the tray they give you
There's signs all around the queues leading up to it though telling you what you need to do so it's fine
Ah wicked, thanks for the info everyone- going to sleep now! Wish me luck tomorrow!

I'd much rather fly on a jet than on a small little plane, those things crash all the time.
