[TV hit Downton Abbey has sparked a £6.5Billion
tourism boom.
Almost nine million foreigners a year are flocking
to Britain’s historic stately homes. And tourism bosses
claim it’s thanks to the popular ITV period drama series.
The most frequent visitors to our
posh pads are Americans — at more than
a million a year, the VisitBritain figures reveal.
Joss Croft from VisitBritain said:
“Adaptations of classics by Jane Austen
and the Brontë sisters as well as the success
of period dramas such as Downton Abbey
are helping to increase interest
in visiting stately homes.”
Tourism Minister Hugh
Robertson added: “Downton-style stately
homes are some of our biggest tourist attractions.”
Altogether, the nine million foreigners
who visited a stately home spent £6.5billion
while they were in the country. ]

Britain's always been popular because of its aristocratic past though hasn't it? Impressive figures nonetheless
