View Full Version : The population of the planet...

Ok I'm going to be serious for once.

Why is this subject never talked about? What are we on now? About 9 Billion people? It's only going to get bigger and this planet can't cope, why does nobody seem to seriously care about this?

What could we do to curb population growth without becoming totalitarian? Does this bother anyone else?

It's incredibly worrying. Although just the 7 billion I think :p

I think we should wipe out anyone that spells "definite" as "definate". It's only fair.

Won't be long before its 9 lol.

I like your method of removing removing illiterates from our gene pool. That should account for half of the British Isles alone :joker:

Yes they are on about a baby boom in the UK but 70% of that baby boom is from foreigners who are having 2+ children. Nothing wrong with how many children you have as long as you can afford them. It seems the rich have 2 or less children and middle class/poorer families have more sprogs. Need to put a limit of UK immigrants for a start. Our little country is getting too clogged up. There will be no green belt land in 20 years and we will be clogged up with housing. By the year 2031 it has been predicted most people will be single so we will need 2 houses for a standard split up nuclear family.

Most experts seem to agree that population growth is actually slowing and will continue slowing over the next decade. Also it is thought that the population will only reach 10bn in 2100.

unemployed people have to have multiple babies in order to finance their workless lives.
and no I didn't get that opinion from the daily mail but from actual real human beings who claim £36000+ tax free a year plus of course free rent, free heating, free council tax
id need to earn approx. £65,000 a year working 60+ hours, to have a similar disposable income as a man with 6 or 7 kids and no job....and that's fair how?

That is NOT an option, if anything we should all be having more sex.

Probably. They probably sit around a table playing cards for weeks on end, agree on a number and then pretend they spent all that time studying census information and foreign studies.

No need to worry. Demographic transition theory states that societies' populations wax and wane based on what stage of industrialization it's in. In the post-industrial period population growth slows and eventually the population begins to decline until it reaches a stable level, as is already being seen in parts of Europe. Sleep easy, everyone

Europe yes, our country itself would be in decline if it werent for immigration.

The problem is when we start to make conditions better for the people in Africa. Yeh they should be helped but as a downside we could see a massive population boom.

Birth control and policies on having children (China :wavey:) are what should be tackled, but we wont see the effect until long term.

I guess, although immoral, the focus on keeping the elderly alive as long as possible should be narrowed. I know for sure if I was 80 and was unable to look after myself I would rather no longer be alive, Id just be a nuisance.

But it depends on how serious the big people think this problem is!

This actually proved disastrous in China because now they're facing the problem of too many old people and not enough young people to take care of them, plus female infanticide has led to many more males than females, so a lot of men are unable to marry.

It was succesful in slowing the population increase which is what the thread was looking at.

Theres gonna be consequences whatever actions get put in place.

No method Is perfect as Swineisfine has pointed out but also like Jords has said purely on the goal oF population control it works.

Unfortunately there seems to be this sliding barometer where on one side we have population control and on the other we have freedom of choice. Whatever we decide to do to curb any serious population incline is no doubt going to infringe on a persons basic human rights.

there is a very tried and tested method of population control!
its called, starvation!, 22 thousand children die of it every day!

thesheriff443
11-08-2013, 08:33 AM
I get that, but once we solve that problem (hopefully) we are going to be left with a humongous population boom within the lesser developed areas.

I think we should be looking to find civil, humane ways to at least stabilise the planets population although ideally we could do with dropping down a few billion.

people have been dying from starvation since the beginning of time and that will never change.
don't worry about how many people there are, we will all be long dead before its an issue for any of us.

We are in a better position to deal with it than we ever have been.

And I know I'll be food for the worms before any of this really matters but that attitude has pretty much *******ed up our planet. Ah it's alright ill just pop all that waste in here it won't be my problem etc.

listen, there is a more than enough food for every one!, we have beef and grain mountains, we give money to farmers not to produce as much as they could! but there is already a human cull going on!

there is enough food for everyone but developed country's don't share that food with the people that need it!
hence human culling!

is that simple enough for you to understand?

This is purely my own view and it's nothing more than idle speculation but I think it makes a lot of sense...

The world is overcrowded. There are too many people using resources that the planet cannot regenerate fast enough. The sharp rise in population over the last century has been unbelievable. Nature has a way of balancing out such over/underpopulations - if there are lots of rabbits one year, the number of predators will rise too. If there are fewer rabbits, there are fewer predators. Humans are not generally preyed upon by any animal beyond surprise attacks from animals like polar bears and sharks. We are at the top of the food chain. So we're being wiped out by cancers, infertility, homosexuality, viruses, plagues, our own stupidity... Call me crazy but it makes a lot of sense to me. Every time we cure an incurable illness, another one springs up in its place. In the past, people didn't live long enough to get cancer or have organ problems... with medical advances being made all the time, we're just going to suffer from more complicated illnesses as time goes by and as the world's population increases.

Apparently there are more people alive today than have died EVER!

If that's true then that's mind blowing.

I doubt it really, but meh.

I agree with zee, the next problem will one of our doing, with all the carcinogens pumping into the atmosphere and strange viruses with no cure that may be the next great leveler.

''The number of people with the virus in November 2012 was nearly 100,000.

But a quarter of people who have the human immunodeficiency virus are not aware they have been infected.''

'' Under the HIV Testing Kits and Services Regulations 1992, it is currently illegal to sell kits which offer on-the-spot HIV results in the UK.

But officials plan to change the law so people can perform a saliva test at home to quickly give a result.''

They have been aware of the dangers of this virus for years... so why the delay for this simple test?

About 2.5bn-ish exists in China & India alone. I don't think the UK really has that much of a population problem. There's only 62.74m in the UK, which is pretty normal for a country the size of ours. The only place that I've been that I'd say is actually overcrowded is London. In Burnley where I grew up, the town is actually shrinking, not growing.

It's not really a problem the planet could hold 20 or 30 billion people if need be, as there as vast tracts of land on the earths surface which are vastly under utilised eg Canada, Australia, Scandinavia . Population density of these countries is extremely low ...

Z
12-08-2013, 08:18 AM
Yeah but we've only got so many resources; there is no practical way we could support 20-30 billion people on the planet.
