The private Dutch-based Mars One project is proposing to select a group of 40 would-be civilian astronauts this year, aiming to send four of them on a no-return journey to to the red planet in 2022.
Experts have questioned both the financial and practical viability of the mission, but that hasn't stopped people signing up in droves, including 30,000 Americans, CNN reported.
The estimated cost for the initial mission is $6 billion (£3.87 billion) which Mars One hopes to raise through sponsors and selling broadcasting rights to media companies, including a reality show of the colonisation project.
It hopes to send a second group of four people to Mars a few years after the first. None of them will return to Earth. Before leaving the astronauts would train for eight years, learning medical and survival skills.
The prospect of a one way ticket has attracted a flood of interest since the mission was proposed in May 2012. The cost of applying varies depending on the person's country, but is $38 (£24.50) in the US.
Mars One chief executive Bas Lansdorp told CNN: "We wanted it to be high enough for people to have to really think about it, and low enough for anyone to be able to afford it."

It all sounds great now, but on the night before their seven month one way spaceship journey to Mars i'm sure reality will kick in. :p
I'd be surprised if any of these people genuinely go through with it. The novelty will wear off a couple of months into the eight year training session!

Going into space does not appeal to me, but this sounds genuinely brilliant. Being the first to colonize a new world. Yes please.

You are going to die in this world anyway. If a person has no real ties be it family or a job, they have a genuine interest in science I don't see why they wouldn't do it. It would be a fantastic experience. You would be the first people that lived there and in 300 years from now people could be living there and children would be studying you in school.

Those people aren't going to die in this world  those are all very good points CynicalHermit! I just couldn't get my head around people willingly going somewhere totally alien knowing that that was the end.

I'm surprised no one has realised this is going to be a hoax show?
Holland is notorious from its hoax tv shows, remember the Big Donor Show?
This is quite clearly going to be another show similar to that Space Cadets show on C4 years back.
We already have a thread on this, I think Ben posted it ages ago.

I doubt this will be real. Sending a group of people to mars in addition to building a permanent settlement one they arrive there would probably be more than a trillion Euros in cost. As if a TV production company from a mid-level nation like Holland could finance that..

Think of the horrible things they will do to one another when they are no longer governed by Earth laws...

I think they were going to plaster the whole thing in advertising and sponsorship deals though. Of course, I hadn't considered the possibility it was all a fake set up which does sound quite likely.

Within 10 minutes of arriving, they'll be building walls and claiming god promised them Mars.
Boom.

No.... they'll be paying someone else to build the walls. And getting it done at a discount with a completion clause.
