View Full Version : Would you give up life in the UK if given the chance?

Same question applies to anyone who lives in a different country.
Many people moan about living in the UK, but if you were given a free ticket to make a permanent move abroad... would you take it? If so, where would you go? Would you be willing to give up everything and take up a new life somewhere else accepting their different culture, tv, rules, laws, food etc? Or would you rather stay here?
I wouldn't mind living abroad for a couple of years. I've become interested in Canada recently, i'd love to experience living in one of their freezing cold winters. I recently read online that some areas can average -20/30 around January time. :amazed: I'm not sure if I could ever move permanently though, i'd miss things too much. Especially my family!
Jesus.

I had that choice recently, but I chose to remain. I do have commitments here that made things a bit more difficult, but if I didn't have those, then I would definitely do it.

I would love to live in the USA, Sweden or Germany. Or Canada. I'd happily relocate to any of those.

No. I love where i live. I think this is a brilliant country to live in. Not knocking other countries. There are lots of places I'd like to spend a year in...or a few years...just for the experience, but this is my home and I can't imagine anywhere I'd prefer to live

I'm Irish but I would move somewhere warmer if I could, too many commitments here though
Jessica.

I don't live in the UK but yes, I would leave Ireland in a heartbeat if it were possible.

Why isn't it possible? You don't have kids and a mortgage yet Jess

Well, if I go then I will have literally nowhere to stay, we need to have an apartment secured before I can go, there's already a lot saved but it's a bit below the price of somewhere to stay, so it's going to be two years at most before I move there for good.
Jesus.

Are you Italian, Ness?

I'd like to live in a country where there are 4 seasons, not 11 months a year of summer. My 1st choice would probably be Germany also because I love the language and there are some of my relatives who live in Munich, although I'd rather live in Berlin.
Jessica.

Easily. I'd love to like in the USA or something
Jessica.

Nice  Are you learning the language?
Well, I learned a few words when I was there last week but it's one of those languages that you really have to immerse yourself in. I would love to learn it at home but I don't have any reliable resources. :bawling:

Yeah, actually living there is the best way to do it I reckon.

No. I'd love to travel more but I'd always want my home to be in the UK.
I know people complain, but it's not that bad. Or at least it wasn't. These er... changes are happening all over the world.

No, I love Britain and all it has to offer.
I love the 4 seasons, I love the eccentrics we seem to nurture and above all I love the countryside.
I spent my childhood in Africa...but always wanted to come back "home".

I love living in the UK. Yes I'm one of those pesky immigrants, took somebodys job...though I bought my own house to make up for that :amazed: and I don't think I have stopped anyone getting dental treatment yet :D:

Having been lucky enough to have lived and worked abroad a few times, I could never leave the UK permanently. I love this place, I love the change of seasons, I love the history, the culture, the quirkiness of the people... I'd never want to live anywhere else.

omgz you speak German
Do you think Spanish is a language that you'd really have to immerse yourself in too? If you try and learn a little bit of Spanish it'll be a lot easier to speak Portuguese.

I think I would mix them up badly though. :bawling: I am scared I would have half of my sentences in Portuguese and half in Spanish or something if I did that. The best word I learned is "chapadão", I was saying it all week and Pedro's sisters got me a mug made with the word on it. :joker:

I don't think it's possible to judge whether you'd like to live in a country on the basis of a holiday.
But if I did, it would be Austria.

I spent a year in America and loved it...but I wouldn't do it permanently now (although at the time with no commitments if I could have found a way to stay I would have jumped at it but all my green card marriage proposals were turned down)

Good for your sisters friend ,is she doing well?I bet she has been given more of an opportunity there than she would have had here.
