I love the lyrics to I Could Have Lied by the Red Hot Chili Peppers because I associate it with someone and it reminds me of them everytime I hear it, it's a kind of bitter sweet memory. I only found out recently that Anthony Kiedis actually wrote it about Sinéad O'Connor, apparently they were seeing eachother very briefly years ago and she broke his heart

Here's some of the lyrics :

There must be something
In the way I feel
That she don't want me to feel
The stare she bares cut me
I don't care
You see so what if I bleed

I could never change
Just what I feel
My face will never show
What is not real

I could have lied I'm such a fool
My eyes could never never never
Keep their cool
Showed her and I told her how
She struck me but I'm ****ed up now

Under the bridge:

It's hard to believe
That there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe
That I'm all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

I'm smothered in...
Memories, and you are too
What is given back
We can't unglue
All this sticks to me
Some days sweet like honey
Some days tart like marmite
Sticks to your heart
Sweetheart
Straight to your heart

It's sad but it's true how society says her life is already over
There's nothing to do and there's nothing to say
'Til the man of her dreams comes along
Picks her up and puts her over his shoulder
It seems so unlikely in this day and age.

She's got an alright job but it's not a career
Whenever she thinks about it, it brings her to tears
'Cause all she wants is a boyfriend, she gets one night stands
She's thinking how did I get here, I'm doing all that I can.

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls.

And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day.

And a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I.

The whole song is gorgeous but the paragraph in bold in particular stands out as beautiful to me.

I love lily :)

Husband don't know what he's done
Kids don't know what's wrong with mum
She can't say, they can't see,
Putting it down to another bad day

So this is how it feels to be lonely
This is how it feels to be small
This is how it feels when your word means nothing at all

Your teeth are all yellow they're covered in mold
You're only fourteen you look a hundred years old
When looks were handed out you were last in line
Your face looks like where the sun don't shine
Did you fall off a building and land on your head
Or did a truck run over your face instead
There ain't no pill cuz you ain't ill-
You ugly!

U.G.L.Y
You ain't got no alibi
You ugly
Hey! Hey! You ugly X2

..I guess one of the obvious ones is Chasing Cars but it's only really a few lines..I think some of the greatest and most powerful lyrics are 21 Guns...

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Do you know what's worth fighting for?
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away and you feel yourself suffocating?
Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside, you're in ruins

One, 21 Guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 Guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I ...

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul
Your faith walks on broken glass and the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last, you're in ruins

One, 21 Guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 Guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I ...

Did you try to live on your own?
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone
When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something inside this heart has died, you're in ruins

Siobhan Donaghy - Iodine

Hurling ourselves down to the depths
Back since the day lest we forget
'Cos time it is said, our memories crept
So now let's political get

There is no left wing
To fight the right wing

We're like turkeys in a box
Our feathers all plucked off
And we're all ready
For Christmas Day
Here's the paradox:
We're like presents all wrapped up
And we can't wait
For you to give us away

Acceptable face
All over the place
The lower you stoop
The less the disgrace

You use all your charms
To sound the alarm
Have you got the legs
To call us to arms

Like lambs to the slaughter
We paid for your daughters...

It's more than half the song, but it was written in 2003 and yet, ten years later, it's more relevant than ever. Such an incredibly well written song about the nature of politics, thought provoking and incredible to think it was written by a 19 year old girl.

I hear him
Before I go to sleep
And focus on the day
That's been.
I realize he's there
When I turn the light off
And turn over.

Nobody knows about my man.
They think he's lost on some horizon.
And suddenly I find myself listening
To a man I've never known before,
Telling me about the sea,
Oh his love is to eternity.

Ooh he's here again,
The man with the child in his eyes.
Ooh he's here again,
The man with the child in his eyes.

He's very understanding and he's so
Aware of all my situations.
When I stay up late
He's always with me
What I feel when I hesitate.
Oh I'm so worried about my love.
They say "no, no it won't last forever".
And here I am again my girl,
Wondering what on earth I am doing here.
Maybe he doesn't love me,
I just took a trip on my love for him.

Ooh he's here again,
The man with the child in his eyes.
Ooh he's here again,
The man with the child in his eyes.

oh and... probably the most beautiful song ever written (at least when sung by Hegarty...)

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

There's a ghost on the horizon
When I go to bed
How can I fall asleep at night
How will I rest my head

Oh I'm scared of the middle place
Between light and nowhere
I don't want to be the one
Left in there, left in there

There's a man on the horizon
Wish that I'd go to bed
If I fall to his feet tonight
Will allow rest my head

So here's hoping I will not drown
Or paralyze in light
And godsend I don't want to go
To the sea's watershed

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, Will I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

Athlete - Black Swan Song

I waded through the darkest fields you'd imagine
Your pretty face sketched on the barrel of my gun
And I know you'll be the first to welcome me
When I climb into eternity
Oh, oh

The forest always kept us warm
But it doesn't feel like home anymore
And I know there's bigger mountains where you are
And a better climate for my heart
Oh, oh

I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony
Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms

Though many battles I have won
I lost too many friends I could count on
And I know they'll be the first to welcome me
When I parachute into eternity
Oh, oh

I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony
Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms

And the rain beat down on the rooftops
But there was no sound
There was no sound
And all my friends and family carried me
They carried me home
Carried me home

I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony
Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms
I've been racing the clock
And I've run out of steam
I am ready for my final symphony
Oh my body is weak
But my soul is still strong
I am ready to rest in your arms
Oh, oh

I just had to put the song in its entirety... this is my favourite song, it's about the lead singer's grandfather passing away, telling tales of his life as a soldier in World War II and how he was relieved that his suffering was over and that he would be reunited with his deceased wife and all the friends he lost... Makes me cry, I think it's wonderful
