Absolutely not, in all honesty I'd recommend starting with BBCAN, it's probably a good way to introduce yourself :p the cast were mostly likeable

Then you could decide whether to start watching old BBUS seasons like I have (and which ones) or just wait for next summer

It really wasn't, maybe in comparison to past BBUS seasons but I wouldn't even be watching previous seasons now if I hadn't watched BBCAN, I think it's a decent way to introduce yourself to the game. A fairly likeable cast, some good relationship and friendship dynamics and a fair few rootable people. It's also got enough similarities to BBUK (house design, some comps) to not make it a total transition for someone just starting out.
