I actually clean other peoples house for a living but my own house is complete and utter sh*t tip. Upstairs is worse than down (that's not too bad) I have 2 bedrooms and 1 box room which is where my computer is, all of the rooms are in a mess and cluttered with stuff, so drawers and wardrobes and stuff all need to be sorted out. My question is if your house was the same which room would you start in? would you start computer room as its the smallest? It has a desk with drawers which all need sorting out and also the airing cupboard with bedding etc in it. Or would you start with the main bedroom which has fitted wardrobes and a bookcase in plus 2 plastic sets of drawers. There are actually clothes all over the floor and magazine etc. Or would you start in the other bedroom which has a wardrobe full of crap which really, really needs to be sorted out, There are also some clothes on the floor in there and some shoes and a bed. HELP I don't know where to start. Im having my tea and watching some tv 1st so its going to be about 8pm when I start tonight though.

Hard one this.

If I am having a really Lazy day, I tidy and hoover etc the front room, kitchen and cloakroom in case we get guests.

Start upstars with the bathroom, smallest room and can look good without too much effort.
Then attack the master bedroom, maybe decide to do a good clear out of one wardrobe or set of drawers at a time.

If you have kids then get thm to sort their own room out, just shu the door on it until they do.

That's a hard one as I spend a lot of time in the computer room on the computer lol but I also spend a lot of time in my bedroom as I sleep in there and get dressed etc in there. Rules out the back bedroom though. I should do a poll lol

My bathroom in miniature I think they forgot to put one on and added it @ the last minute so that's ok, I normally have the loo etc ok. The smallest room is the computer room. No I don't have kids just dogs pity they cant tidy lol

I used to love it, now it is just a chore.

Don't mind the big spring clean or Xmas clean though as it becomes a mission, but everyday cleaning is o be avoided at all cost:spin:

Mizzy choose one room, toss a coin if you must and stick at it even if it takes a week until it is done, then move on to the next. Not sure why you are sat watching the Chase when you could do up and at it:nono::joker:

Start by grabbing a bin bag and laundry basket and picking up everything from the floor, put magazines and stuff you don't need into the bin bag for throwing out and the clothes that are being kept into the laundry basket for washing, once the floor is tidied move onto thing likes drawers, bookcases , wardrobes etc.

If it's a right mess then do one room at a time and don't leave the room or sit down, check the pc etc until it's all done.

I would throw out anything I hadn't used in the last 6 months.

I can't be doing with clutter tbh, I can't even actually sit and watch tv or anything like that if there's any clutter or mess around me.

Yes I am exhausted and have had to stop for tonight. Ive got an idea of putting the plastic drawers inside the white wardrobe in the spare room as there is a shelf missing, so looks like its going to be that room next. Why do I accumulate so much junk/crap? My mate who is like uber clean & tidy asked me what do I mean? Well I have make-up. odd ear rings, jewellery, 100s of odd socks, books, magazines, I seem to have a lot of gaviscon sachets (I get a lot of indigestion) and lots of paracetamol packets, hand creams (ive got excema on my hands) It just seems I have lots of junk lol I did a huge sort out of make - up not so long ago and gave it away but still I have loads. I wouldn't care but I barely wear it lol

I love sorting through stuff. I find it quite therapeutic, puts me in a good frame of mind.

I bought a few storage boxes from amazon over the summer and cleared my room. It's never looked so organised.

I hate holding onto stuff I have no use for though, I can't collect crap.

mizzy25
25-09-2013, 08:38 PM
I seem to collect crap all the time lol Each xmas I get things I either don't like, have no use for or they don't fit, But to be polite I thank whoever bought them for me and then they get put away generally in the plastic drawers I had to buy due to the accumulation of crap and they stay there, just incase the person that bought it actually comes to my house.... NOBODY ever comes to my house I have 7 dogs lol

I think you just need to sling the plastic drawers in the bin complete with contents. :joker: Why do we buy containers to put stuff in that we never use...one of lifes mysteries.

Wow mizzy, you've shocked me here lol!
I have to say I went through a similar stage in my 30's funnily enough as at the time I was very depressed.
I always now try to keep up with the mantra 'tidy house tidy mind' haha!
Organisation is the key and storage, I bought lots of stacking plastic boxes and containers of various sizes, pretty covered boxes for my room, expanding files for paperwork. As well as a sideboard, under sink unit, bookcase, blanket box and shoe storage unit.
Be really ruthless,as yourself 'do I love it, do I need it will it make me money?' if no get rid! Old towels, bedding, curtains and clothes you haven't worn for over a year charity shop or boxed labelled and in the loft if you can't bear to part with old toys/ ornaments, or have a boot sale?
You will feel amazing once you've done it, even if it takes weeks to do it seems you have a very positive mindset to even want to tackle it... good for you mizzy :D

My house is a mess :p I am on an ongoing project to sort it out. I get so far, then it slips back...ah well.

My problem is that there are two major things I need to concentrate on in the short term: my PhD and the house. The house needs sorting because my landlord is not coming anywhere near here til I've done so and the bathroom window has sprung a leak, so every time there's a heavy rainfall it's coming through the frame. This needs dealing with.

I need to repaint the fireplace and a few other bits of woodwork where Carrotchops did a deal of damage during the latter stages of puppyhood. I also need to repaper the kitchen (same reason). But I need to clean and sort first.

I also need to get a decent amount of my thesis written and sent into my supervisor for him to have a glance. This is more important than the house, so I don't do the house because I am 'working on my PhD'. But, I am procrastinating and not actually doing that.

I get so overwhelmed by the totality, I end up doing nothing at all.

So my new rule is: if I am not working on my PhD I must work on the house. One or the other.

Yesterday I did the kitchen (hurrah!). This afternoon I am working on my PhD for realz.

I have a similar problem to Mizzy. My desk at work is spotless but my house can get untidy, not dirty but things are sometimes just thrown into the cupboard instead of being placed into the cupboard. For myself, I have to clear up as soon is there is a mess so that it doesnt get too much. As for where to start with a messy house, just do an hour a day till you';ve got it under control then try and keep the mess down,

Kizzy
26-09-2013, 11:51 AM
Good for you dana :D
I bet you get a lot more done after your kitchen blitz, it really helps... can't explain why but it somehow lifts you out of a 'fug'
doing it is mentally exausting and frustrating as it seems to take hours to do very little, but once it's done it's liberating haha!
Ensuring it stays 'doable' in a reasonable length of time is a must too... who wants to waste time cleaning? :)
( Unless you're being paid £10ph to do it obv eh mizz? ;)
