..I know they're kids Arista, we do WW2 as well...but what's more relevant to them and something they can directly relate to in terms of their own lives/comforts etc is the war evacuees...it's also much easier for mums to put together an outfit without having to do too much as mums are very busy people, I'm sure you know...

It would be likely that without Adolf Hitler, there would not possibly have been a World war 2 day to have.
What a humiliating thing to do to the lad too, marching him off to the cloakroom to remove the outfit.
Maybe this school should only hold Beatrix Potter days or something like that.

..they're not erasing history because the children do learn about all aspects but when you do a WW2 day/excursion or any celebration/commemoration of that time, then you do kind of mostly, in fact everyone dressing up as someone relating to this country and tbh I think it was really unfair and maybe purposefully provocative of his parents to do it and without thought for him because he didn't deserve to be excluded...if it was really 'nnocent' from his parents then they would and should have phoned the school to get their thoughts....

People are still very sensitive about WW2 and Hitler, probably because there are still survivors of the period alive today. That's all it is. I agree that it's selectively hiding the facts of history because they're "distasteful", which is ridiculous... They wouldn't, for example, ban a Ghengis Khan costume or any other of the barbaric historical figures (many, it's debatable, as bad as or worse than Hitler) if they lived hundereds or thousands of years ago. Many Roman emperors and pharaohs were just as barbaric as Hitler, but no one would think to ban that sort of costume.

Maybe its just a case of "too soon"? I'd say by 2050, when everyone still alive at the end of the war is dead and buried, it'll be less controversial. By 2100+ when their children are long gone too, it'll be considered weird NOT to see a Hitler costume at such an event.

Then again, I suspect the boys motivation was probably to be deliberately controversial and impress his friends... Rather than an attempt to preserve historical accuracy. Should be used as an opportunity to try to get him to understand the seriousness of that history, though... Instead of putting their fingers in their ears and shouting LALALA until it goes away.

Actually... Hitler himself wore a grey uniform during the war (which would have been smarter than the one in the picture, anyway) and before the war he would have either been in a brown uniform or the classic black / red SS uniform.

Honestly don't think the main problem is him dressing up as Hitler it's more to do with the fact his parents allowed him to walk round with a Swastika on his arm, think that would be more offensive to people then him dressing up as Hitler, Georgy Zhukov would have been the option if i had children

..yeah that's it really, it's not that we don't cover all aspects in the topic during lessons, even at primary school level but most..(or at least ours..)..visits/special days etc have grandparents invited to them as well because they've always come into the classroom and talked to the children themselves and for them it would be sensitive to see a child with a swastika....tbh I'm sure that the parents would know that and it wasn't 'innocently' done....

Teach history properly, anyone who fought in the war is 90+ now. They I'm sure would want our youth to have more than the 'rose tinted' version taught.
