BRITAIN is braced for the "worst winter in decades" with the first major snowfall expected in weeks.
Forecasters last night warned the entire country is set for a horror freeze which will bring brutal winds and fierce blizzards.
Temperatures have already started to plunge as a swathe of cold air from the Arctic has swept across the UK in the past few days.
The first long-range forecasts warn of "recordbreaking snowfall" next month.
Heavy wintry showers are expected to cause widespread chaos with below-average temperatures possibly lingering until February.
Long-range forecasters blamed the position of a fast-flowing band of air known as the jet stream near to Britain and high pressure for the extreme conditions. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: 'We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades, which could at times grind the nation to a halt.
'Persistent cold snaps with some very heavy snowfall are likely, and I would not be surprised if some records are not broken this year.
'The main issue will be the extreme cold which is showing signs of really bedding in, thanks to freezing winds from the north."
He blamed the 'poorly positioned" jet stream which is expected to be 'blocked" south of the UK, allowing a continual flow of freezing Arctic air.
James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said it was likely to be the worst winter for more than 100 years.
He said: 'A horror winter scenario is likely to bring another big freeze with copious snow for many parts.
'There is also a high risk that we will experience a scenario similar to December 2010 or much worse at times, especially in January.
'This is likely to produce major disruption to public transport and school closures on a prolific scale."
He went on: 'The cold theme from the latter part of October is likely to continue into November - and for the vast majority of the month.
'November could turn out to be a record-breaking month. There is the potential for some significant falls of snow. The northern half is likely to experience the worst conditions.

'It is also likely the southern half will experience a number of major snow events throughout November."
The forecast of a harsh winter comes amid fears that millions of pensioners will face an 'eat or heat" dilemma this year as energy prices are set to rocket by up to 10 per cent.
Households in some areas have all ready been forced to crank up the heating in near-freezing conditions.
Government forecasters said overnight temperatures over the next few days will hover close to freezing in the North with the South in single figures.
Severe storms are thought to have caused the deaths of two people yesterday. A man was killed on the A350 near Trowbridge, Wiltshire, while a driver died when his Jeep spun off the A35 near Bournemouth.
Bad weather also led to ferry delays between Dover and Calais. During the storms, several tons of scaffolding collapsed in Great Yarmouth and trees came down in Essex.
The Met Office is warning of more heavy rain this weekend, with more than an inch in some areas, especially in the South. It issued a severe weather warning for the region today.
A spokesman said: 'Heavy rain is likely to continue into the weekend. Most of the wet weather stays in the South-east, East Anglia and the East Midlands. It is likely to feel cold, especially in areas of rainfall."

Whenever they predict stuff like this it rarely happens. They predict it as a matter of course now so they can't be blamed for not issuing warnings.

Yep. They do it all the time.
They also throw in the standard panic phrases..
"worst winter in decades"
"horror freeze"
"recordbreaking snowfall"
"widespread chaos"
"paralysing winter"
Lets be honest, all it takes is a short snow flurry to bring the UK to a stand still

It is quite shameful to see how that happens, we get about an inch and a half of snow and the news reports are acting like they're reporting the apocalypse.
My parents have photos of me in a snow storm when i was about 4 and it was about 7 inches deep. The Government would probably shut down these days if that happened.

The company I work for have a severe weather policy that if you live within one mile of the office you have to get there even if you have to walk, or you don't get paid. Guess i'm going to be skint in November if this happens.
I did wonder as we have had one of the better summers in a while, whether that would herald a hard Winter. I like Winter, but this one sounds like it could be quite harsh, blizzard type weather can be quite nasty.

Do you not feel raising energy prices by 10% just prior to winter pernicious?
Raise earlier to offset the winter demand if needs be.
Nowhere in my post did I suggest winter weather could be avoided josy

The point of my post Kizzy was that we can't do anything about it, we cant change the weather and we can't change the fuel cost hikes, of course the rising prices has a terrible effect on people but we are powerless to do anything about it.
Every year we hear about these terrible winters that we are going to be hit with and every year we hear that people are going to lose their lives because they can't afford the fuel bills but in reality all we can do is prepare for winter the best we can.
The fuel companies are running a business and the best time for them to raise prices is obviously the winter.

This, and also I think we can all probably do with using a bit less fuel and be more economical, when you consider very few houses had central heating before the 70s, we are a bit soft now I think. I remember waking up when I was young to frost patterns inside the windows, they were magical but it was bliddy freezing when getting dressed.

It did sound a bit glib, put up and shut up is an option yes I suppose.
They are yes, and from a business point of view that makes sense but ethically it's wrong imo.
The British Red Cross have recently added Britain to their list of countries where some require food aid.. is this right?

Anticipating bad weather has a direct link to a discussion on fuel costs, if you don't want to be part of the discussion josy that's fine.

No winter fuel payments then either if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure they could afford to heat their houses back in the day that is why heating was a luxury!, I'm not saying its right, I'm just saying whilst we have no control over the weather and price hikes, we do have control over how much energy we use ourselves and maybe we as a consumer need to rethink how we live our lives and act accordingly, switching energy providers is a nonsense as whilst there may be savings in the short term, in the long term you end up paying more (at least that has been my experience), the only way to guarantee lower bills is to just use less unfortunately!

I was quite surprised when I moved back to my home village last year in that the gritters are out constantly at even the slightest sight of frost never mind snow, they even have men walking up and down the sidewalks here shovelling grit to keep the paths clear and then when it does snow the farmers join in to keep the place gritted.
I think that probably has something to do with this village being on the news a few years back because people were snowed in for days though but the comparison from where I used to live is shocking.

Tbh, I am extremely sympathetic to the vulnerable. However I dont see how people will die because they can't afford to heat their home. OAPs, disabled and those on low incomes get 150 quid off their energy bills via whatever company they are with for the winter months. And Also get cold weather payments. I believe thats another 200 or so quid for OAPs/disabled...though only 20 quid per week that its below 0 for low income families with kids.

The only way older people cannot afford to heat their homes, by my reckoning, taking into account the amount they are given to do so...is if they spend it on other things instead of heat..and whos fault is that?

Well kind of :joker: I'm just saying we are probably all a little bit "too used" to having central heating and maybe we should turn it off, at least that way we regain a bit of control over what we spend. We cannot change the pricing structure, the government aren't going to force prices down and Labour will only freeze what is already in place so we got to do it in our own small way I think.

I'm saying that the government could and should intervene, they did in the banks, housing and trains?...
Why is this any different? because it only affects the vulnerable, and nobody cares enough about them, thats how I see it.

..yeah, I think also there's often more inclement weather in the North and Scotland, so they probably prepare better for it than they do here...it isn't actually too bad because they do have the gritters out at night as well but not always, especially when it's come more unexpectedly at the very beginning of the ice/snow periods we have..I do love it and I love 'snow days' lol..but not so much those days when it's just a little bit and icy or black ice on the roads...I like it when there's lots..if it's going to snow, let it snow..lol...

Yes of course they should but we have to be realistic here, it is unlikely they will, except maybe in election year.
Things like gas prices are determined by international markets though, and tbh if the companies knew a freeze was coming they would just push up prices before it..

Well not really. Hikes are put down to being because of that, but you never see prices go down when the wholesale price comes down...

Yes they go down as well as up, has there ever been a reduction in gas prices?
Are their profit margins ever affected by this flux.... no.
Yes I see them jumping for joy at the prospect of another harsh winter, can they explain why when oil has risen 4% the bills rise 10%.... no.

I saw some bod from SS blaming the government for making them pay for cavity wall insulation for customers, and also the green taxes. So if you didn't get your "free" cavity wall insulation get it because you are paying for it anyway.
Well not really. Hikes are put down to being because of that, but you never see prices go down when the wholesale price comes down...
But that's the reason prices have been on a steady increase over the last few years, because we import so much now we're a lot more exposed to global markets, doesn't help that there's loads of green taxes on energy bills these days either
This is why we should encourage fracking imo
Vicky.

Q. what other possibly lethal gas could be released by fracking?
What the bloody hell is fracking? :conf:
Not completely sure of the ins and outs of it lol, but it's like drilling deep into the earth to get gas from shale rock, been used a lot in America which has got them cheaper prices but the environmentalists are dead against it

If you don't know what it is or the implications of it why are you saying you welcome it?
Best to educate yourself on things before you decide to champion them.
It's not just environmentalists that oppose it but geologists too.

Can anybody tell me did electricity prices ever fall after they put up all those wind turbines in various locations?

No need to be patronising, we can't all be as all round enlightened as you
I mean I don't know the specifics of the actual method, I do know that it has been very successful in the US, that it would make energy bills cheaper, and that if done properly it doesn't necessarily cause massive harm to the environment. Plus environmentalists invariably exaggerate the dangers of things like this :idc:

I hate people that complain about snow, i would give anything to have snow here in California.
When i have fond memories of my childhood, almost all of them involve snow.

Ok sorry, it is daft to say you want something and not know what it is or the implications.
We are around 850 miles from one end to the other, the proposed places for testing is Leeds... forgive me for not sharing your enthusiasm.

I don't think that was the intention, they are just an alternative to coal and nuclear as a means of generating electricity as far as I know as they are cleaner and greener.

I didn't say I didn't know what it is or the implications of it, I said I wasn't really clued up on the specifics of the method, like if I hadn't read that article I couldn't tell you off the top of my head that "a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well. The process is carried out vertically or, more commonly, by drilling horizontally to the rock layer"

Wouldn't it be nice if they passed on even a small percentage, as it is a natural resource that is powering them, and I presume the tax payer paid to build them, just a thought.
Kizzy

Well they are an issue if they add to energy bills
If you want to deviate the point away from the energy companies ethical responsibilities yes...
I understand this may be under debate now my guess is it could be removed.
At what cost I don't know.

But it would be impossible to measure how much energy they save each household, the benefit is not having to rely so heavily on fossil fuel and aid in decarbonisation targets.
It may not benefit us at all initially, it's an investment in the future.
Less pollutants and as we have little coal of our own (spit) less importation costs.

My thinking is if you want to talk about fuel prices and fracking, make a thread and you can go to town on the subject.
Meh I'd say that energy prices are pretty relevant to a thread about us apparently having the "worst winter ever"
Vicky.
