HMV is expected to launch a new digital download app at midnight (October 17).

The high street store is looking to compete with digital retailers with the new application, which will allegedly be available on mobile and desktop devices.

The software is thought to allow customers to download MP3 files from their online store in a bid to rival popular stores like iTunes, Amazon and Google Play.

A leaked screenshot sees the supposed app being used on a tablet device, with the homescreen displaying new releases under the title 'Must Have Music'.

HMV is currently undergoing a relaunch after being pulled out of administration.

Sir Paul McCartney recently announced plans for a signing event at HMV in London's Oxford Circus on October 18 in a bid to promote his new album New, and lure customers on to the high street.

They have opened a new store on Oxford Street too. Although why they need 2 stores on the same street I have no idea. They had a second store a bit further down until a few years back, as they did in some other cities, such as Manchester, and I always thought that was unecessary. The whole thing needs revamping, but I suppose an app, although maybe coming late in the day, will give them a chance to pull in some revenue without too many overheads.

From their Facebook page...

Good morning everyone,

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the brand new hmv app!

Available on desktop, iPhone & Google Play, the app allows customers to download music via image and sound searches, as well as discover and listen to tracks wherever you go.

Perfect for customers who want to know what our stores are playing, simply use the sound search to download right there and then while you shop.

If you're browsing an album in-store and want to know how it sounds, simply snap a pic of the cover and you'll be able to listen to it there and then (using your headphones of course).

Simply search 'hmv music' in the app store or Google Play to download.

For more information about the app click here: http://on.fb.me/H5tW88
And to check out the desktop site click here: http://bit.ly/1cXuXgy

We've got more exciting announcements coming your way over the coming weeks so keep your eyes peeled.

Apple have suspended HMV's new app, which allows users to purchase albums using their smart phone.

After launching on October 17, the app is now no longer available for sale at the iOS App Store. HMV have released a statement over the app's removal, saying they have been given no explanation as to why the app has been removed. Paul McGowan, the Chairman of HMV and CEO of Hilco Capital, has said:

It is disappointing that Apple has chosen to suspend an app that has proven to be very successful in only a few short days despite Apple having already approved the exact same version on 15th September. We are unable to explain the change in Apple's position as we have been given no explanation by them as to any difference they view between the approved version and the one suspended this evening.

He added: "The Android and HTML versions of the app are spectacular and are proving a big hit with UK consumers with downloads growing constantly over the last few days. They will also be launched in Ireland on 24th October and we have pencilled in a Canadian launch during November."

HMV have stated that users who have already downloaded the app via Apple will still be able to buy albums using the software and that developers are currently working a new version of the app for Apple to approve. Meanwhile, a new HMV website will launch on October 24.

bit disturbing how much of a monopoly apple have on online media...
