The last few weeks has felt like a chore to come on here tbh. I used to love Off Season but this has to be the worst I've ever encountered while being a member. The flair that made it great is gone.

Anyone else feel that way?

Not really, but I was a bit disappointed a week or two ago when nobody was applying for ICB and I was considering jacking it all in together.

I think there're too many members unwilling to do things for the benefit of the forum at the moment... we've lost quite a few members who were willing to run games due to various scandals (Mollie) or a seeming loss of interest in the site (Locke/Novo). Obviously there're still plenty of members putting the effort in but I find it a bit of a kick in the teeth when people complain about how dead the forum is and then don't make threads or posts.

But then it is hard to care about a forum that even the owner doesn't care about, or hasn't shown any signs of caring about for well over a year.

It's a chicken and egg argument. They don't make threads or posts because they find the place dead.

This is just a forum. I know a few of us have been here for awhile but I have quite a casual outlook on it. Fair dues to those who put in the effort but I don't think it's a prerequisite to have to 'put in effort' and go starting threads and games all the time in order to feel the place has become a bit of a drag. Myself I'm just a poster really.

On that note this is more aimed at previous more obvious examples than your post but I've seen people in the past do the whole "I set up games, what do you do, buster?" thing and I'm just like "pfffft ........ ?". There is something a bit uppity about that mentality I think. If you're a decent poster then you're pulling your weight already, IMO. Extra curricular stuff is not mandatory.

Me? I think it's graaaand, like. No better or worse than the last few off seasons. If less is going on I use the forum less, which is what is happening now, and have more time to do other things in the day. It all works out either way.

S'all good.

It's a tad on the boring side but there are still a few active posters that make the forum enjoyable.

This discussion always appears frequently whenever it's off-season, so it's probably just the change of having lots of threads and discussions about a particular subject to not having it at all.

There seems to be scattered bands of people here and there and then the mod team and then in between there it's a free for all.

Maybe community orientated activities would bring people together, I like Shaun's member reviews stuff like that which get people feeling like they are actually part of the forum and not a ghost.

..no, TiBB doesn't depress me at all, I find that when I get 'irritated' more or notice it being quieter more is usually when I'm not working..holidays/half term etc..so it's not really anything different on TiBB, just my perspective of it because it becomes more of a focus if I'm not doing anything else and the habit is to log on...once I go back to work and I have my 'balance' back which I need, the sun starts to shine on TiBB once again...

Ammi
07-11-2013, 04:47 AM
..I think for me, because my OH doesn't get so much time off work as I do and the boys are older and doing their own thing most of the time..the school holidays can become like a 'monthly period' and I get grumpy/bored/restless/irritated and then it's like pfffft, with your top 10s, Shaun..:idc:...

A lot of new members have to do a lot to get 'noticed' unless they cosy up with one of the favourites or spark up something controversial.

I was practically a ghost until I lit the touch paper on that H.M.S Samuel thread.

Well isn't that true of life in general, you get noticed if you speak to people or start good threads/conversations? Sitting in a corner saying nothing is never going to get you noticed on a forum

If I see new members or members that have few posts to their name I bump their threads to give them air time.

That's great, I do try to make an effort to speak to newer members as well but I think it's unfair to say you need to "cosy" up to one of the favourites to get noticed it makes the place sound like some type of a cartel and it's simply not true either (whoever the favourites are) I think most of our regular members here love to see good and interesting new members and like to speak to new people, it's what forums are about really

Yeah I've seen that too from a handful of members but that's always happened and always will, every year on here (and other forums) you always get people talking about how great it was in the good old days and how crap the new members are but I think for the most part, new members are welcomed and wanted on here

Listen I don't know what this place was like a couple of years ago. Maybe it was better, maybe people like me are to blame for this forum going down the ****ter.

One thing I do know is that this forum needs a private sub forum, hidden away from non members or those that aren't involved where people can thrash out their differences. Things get deleted and tempers simmer and nobody knows what's going on. I don't know about you but if people genuinely thought I was a reason this forum was losing its flair I'd want to know about it,

I understand why things are deleted or closed because sometimes it completely derails the thread and turns into a slagging match.

I just wish there was a better way than 'let's delete everything and sweep it all under the carpet' because nothing gets resolved and people think the other person is being protected.

That's the culture around here now.

Nothing really depressed me online tbh..
Only a couple members annoy me.. Wouldn't say i get depressed about anything on here.
But one thing that does get to me so much is how members who have been here for a while keep on saying how good TIBB was before.. And imo it just brings down the current crop of new members (who joined from June to now).
that gets to me a lot im not gonna lie. It pisses me off abit.

It's pretty pointless - Social groups are terrible things anyway in my book. I've joined a couple, but then think what's the point and leave them. I don't like how messy they make my profile look either!!

When people are just willing to lie and spew out anything, then they avoid having to face their own actions anyway, because justification is better than reflection.

Anyone who knows me, will say I'm the first person to raise my hand and apologise when I know I'm wrong, but that doesn't work with everyone, and one-sided discussions about stuff is pretty meaningless.

It's annoying when things are removed and people are like 'what did he say? What did she do?'

I don't know if this means much but what I've noticed is that members who previously quite often have been at loggerheads with each other are actually coming together to advocate a more open door policy.

It's not like it's the more placid members who likely don't get embroiled in disagreements that are for it, it's the people that are likely to be affected by it.

I think that says something myself although others may disagree of course.

There is no way at all that things will be kept in a private forum, we already see the same petty differences between members popping up in threads day after day and ruining them because the members in question just cant help but snipe at each other and refuse point blank for stupid reason to use the ignore function.

The sad thing is here most of the on going disagreements are between the mostly older members of the forum who I would have expected to be a bit more mature about online arguments tbqh, so if you all want to insult each other and tell each other what you really think then use the private messages option with a chance of a ban for it or go else where because most other members don't want to see it on the forum and couldn't really care at all about all your pointless arguments.

And IMO and I see a lot more than you do, it's certainly not the younger members that cause most of the bother on this forum, the older (in age) members are far far worse.
This is also true.

I have to say I can't see which posts got deleted so maybe I can't comment fairly but I personally have grown out of this "give us freedom mods garhhhh!" thing. Anyone who knew me on here years ago will know I was the most outspoken person going when it came to freedom of expression. But nowadays I'm like "look if the moderators closed or deleted something it was probably because you were all nattery and taking-the-internet-too-seriously and you could all do with shutting the **** up."

It's weird. I was always held up - mostly in a positive light - as being this really volatile, argumentative person but I really don't see that in myself. Maybe before but for ages now I've felt pretty zen about the whole dealio. I see everyone else bickering at each other now. Really boring bickering, too. Nothing really entertaining to watch.

Tales from Back In The Day will continue in it's same slot next week.

..I don’t think it’s an age thing at all that cause any conflict, people don’t respect age, they respect other people regardless of age...it’s personalities/characters, not age who may not get along but I can’t imagine there’s a forum where that wouldn’t happen, it's just inevitable ..it’s unfair and quite offensive to say ‘it’s the older ones’, ‘it’s the younger ones’....and it just isn’t true...if anyone has ‘issues’ then they have an option to ignore, but if they want to resolve anything and they can't/don't do it through PM, then having a private 'slog it out' type forum would be pointless and wouldn't make any difference at all....

Jack_
07-11-2013, 04:09 PM
It's been discussed before but it's always decided that it wouldn't be a good idea and would end up spilling all over the forum or involving people who don't want to be involved or used as a place just to get away with insulting people

Then all you do is have a strict zero tolerance policy in every area of the forum other than the private area. If any kind of argument breaks out on the main board after the issue has been resolved in the said section, they're just banned for a week or something. The idea would be that if a debate turns into an argument in a thread, then it's stopped and sent to the private area where it can continue for as long as needs be. The PM idea is perfectly reasonable but when there's still rules governing that it doesn't solve anything either?

If you let people have an area to really go to town and sort out their differences, I think in the end people would laugh it off and it would end up solving a lot of problems. Sweepings things under the carpet and not allowing issues to be resolved, no matter whether that takes a slanging match or not, just festers more problems than it solves because people still have issues with each other and aren't allowed to go at it to sort them out

If nothing else I think it should be trialled for a couple of weeks, this idea has been suggested so many times that it may as well at least be given a go to see who is right or wrong about whether it'll work or not

Josy
07-11-2013, 04:13 PM
The private area idea wont work and wont be given a go no matter how much it's brought up we have been through all this before.

There has been a couple of occasions where we have took a step back and let things run there course and that never worked, reports were coming in constantly and people were blaming us asking where we were and why we never stepped in.

Seriously if people want to argue with other members so much then they can go find somewhere else to do it.

Stu

It sounds like a pig of an idea, to be honest. Sanctioning a public bloodbath forum just to satiate some nutters need to have their conflict viewed in a public space. Why would anybody even want to promote that kind of carry on, let alone the people to whom the maintenance of the site is held accountable to?

How would it work? It would take the novelty out of spontaneous arguments. Do I set up a thread saying "Hey joeysteele, I'm calling you out, bro".

It's just childish. We don't even have a decent pedigree of argumentative members to make it work. It would just be unending catcalls and gifspam.

I will say no more apart from if young members were stopped from attacking in gangs after planning it on their messages things wouldnt be so bad on here ,IMO its the young members who cause all the bother, the older ones are more street wise and maybe know better ,but the young ones dont show respect

Since this is obviously directed at me

1) I have been infracted for things that have concerned you before, so don't assume that I haven't. Thanks

2) I know 18 isn't old but being referred to as the 'youngsters' as if we're some little bunch of yobs that terrorise TiBB and all of its lovely, respectable, squeaky clean older members during on-season is quite patronising and now that I'm writing it also quite hilarious, please stop it

3) Age is completely irrelevant when it comes to who gets into trouble on here. I could quite easily sit here and say that there's a hell of a lot of 'older' members that have caused many problems on this forum in the last few months, and I would be correct, but there have been many young, gay, female, religious, atheist, black, white people that have done the same...do you not see what I'm getting at? Age is irrelevant, so are all of these other categories. Individuals cause problems, not social groups determined by factors beyond those individuals control (age being the example here). What's next? 'Those ****ing greedy bi's on TiBB are ruining the forum with their rude attitudes'? You wouldn't get away with categorising anyone else and accusing them of causing the problem, so why is age any different?

I'd much rather sort stuff out via PM myself as I alluded to in my last post, but the rules still apply there. The problem is that if I were sent a PM with insults in then hey fair enough it's just the internet, but I could hypothetically send one back with the same kind of content and that person could report it? That's not really fair and isn't really resolving anything. If you scrap the rules for private messaging and just pretend it's like some messaging service that's not part of the forum then yeah, I'd have no problem and it would probably work. The odd occasion when I've taken an argument to PM it has been resolved, but there are just the odd couple of members that have issues with me and to an extent vice versa and if we could just be allowed to say what we really want to say without repercussions, I think in the end the problem would either be resolved, or we'd just conclude that it's best to stay away from each other. We wouldn't even need to be having this discussion if the idea of a no holds barred forums would just be implemented for private messaging, I'd be more than happy with that. The forum idea has only been suggested because PM'ing is no different to the main board rules

Arguments would still break out on the main board, they'd just be told to go to the specified thread in a subsection or something. That way not only would the people who don't like threads going off-topic have their issues resolved with the thread getting back on track, but the people who have long standing issues with each other would at least be able to go into depth about how they feel without feeling they're going to be silenced. In the end that really doesn't resolve anything because the problem is still there, it only gets resolved (or at least people mutually agree to stay clear of each other) when people have the opportunity to say what they wish. You'd of course get members that are disagreeing about the latest Strictly elimination going in there and going 'well I hope you die you ******' but that comes with the territory  the point of it would be to try and resolve the petty, longstanding problems that certain people have with each other on here by allowing them to say what they wish, and it can only stay in that one private section (where it's not ~spoiling the forum for guest browsers), if someone drags it up again on the main board then you go all ghetto on their ass and just ban them. The current system whereby people are infracted and posts get deleted when arguments break out just means that those involved haven't really finished what they started and it's only going to start up some other time

And I say all of this as someone which would probably enter this on the first day to make two lengthy posts about two members, try and resolve the issue and then never return again.

Yep, I was just talking about that as an example earlier in the admin section actually. We ended up getting blamed for not stepping in as well, which would happen here as well

But it wouldn't happen since in the past when you may have let things carry on there are still rules that are in place which give people the right to complain. A no-holds-barred forum would have no rules (well, I'd say other than no attacks on people's personal lives, appearance and obviously the standard no racist/homophobic etc etc), so anyone stepping into it either to read or partake who then complains, well they have no ground to stand on since by that point the point of the forum would have been made clear and that there were no rules governing it. People have no right to complain if it's clear that people are free to go at it as they wish

It's always the same people who like to wind each other up who argue in the thread though, it's not like the thread itself is a cause of the arguments, it's just because it's such a popular thread that everyone gets sucked into it while the countdown is being posted and that inevitably means the people who hate each other are posting at the same time, trying to bait each other. :bored:

it's definitely lost it's edge. probably because BB fans have just gotten older, not many new younger fans.

..I still don't think it's an old/young thing Reece, I think it's more the type of programme they want it to be and the housemates they choose, who seem to be chosen more for conflicting personalities...which you do have to have but you do have to have a balance to those personalities as well, but they do also have a broader age range of housemates, whereas before it was often one token 'oldie'....
