She's not basic IMO. She consistently delivers good pop music - if that's basic then sign me up for several more albums of basic. She's got a tried and tested formula that works; nothing wrong with sticking to what sells the most records. She's dealing with the music business - both parts: the music and the business. Lady Gaga is so pretentious it makes me cringe watching her perform. I can see why so many people find her interesting but personally I think it's all style and no substance - it's not that she isn't capable, because she is, but she's too busy trying to create an image she's forgotten to create the music to back it up. Katy Perry's got all of that under control.

Doesn't Katy Perry write a lot of her own music too? Genuine question, I've no idea. Personally I think Katy Perry/her team write much better songs - Gaga's lead single off her new album was way too wordy and was overflowing with lyrics that just didn't fit at all, and it was all about herself; Katy Perry wrote an empowerment anthem. I know whose music I'd rather listen to.

Katy hasn't progressed as an artist music wise, voice wise, image wise etc. Roar could easily fit in her debut album. She just makes throwaway pop music, and I do like her songs but I wouldn't really download most of them. As far as I understand it, she's much more manufactured in terms of her song lyrics and all that.

And her new single annoyed the hell out of me. She blatantly ripped the melody from another artist, and I know Sara Bareilles publicly stated that she held no animosity over it but the point still stands.

Gaga may be a pretentious tit, but I find she's far more creative than Katy Perry ever is. Katy is just pop, pop that anyone could sing. At least Gaga tries to put in some sort of creative twist to stand out. Katy just bores me.

Katy Perry just had one of the most impressive album campaigns of all time, so to me it's no surprise she's making similar music... because why shouldn't she? If she just made lots of money out of a particular style, then of course she's going to carry on doing that for as long as possible.

And while I can see why many people appreciate that Gaga has done that, personally I think it's contrived and pretentious, because Gaga was launched as this cool popstar whose music videos were all crazy house parties and sunglasses. With Katy Perry what you see is what you get. Good, fun, pop music that you can dance along to. That's all I want from mega pop stars. Gaga is trying to be something that she's not, in my opinion.
