A teacher was in a 'sordid' lesbian relationship with one of her pupils for five years, which started when she kissed the girl in a stationery cupboard when she was only 14.

Rachel Speed, 41, would pick the girl up in her car and drive her to her house, where they would have regular 'sleepovers'. The couple showered together and would perform sex acts, while the victim was dressed in a corset and PVC hotpants, a court heard.

Speed, who had taught science at Fairview High School in Cwmbran, south Wales, for 15 years, carried on the relationship until the girl went to university. She was then dumped by text after her victim met somebody new.

After they split up, she reported Speed to the police, who charged her with indecent assault and sexual activity while in a position of trust. She was found guilty by a jury at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday, and was told by the judge to expect a prison sentence.

The girl's parents had found out about the relationship while it was happening, and made Speed promise to end it until their daughter was 21 years old.
Despite promising to do so, Speed continued to see the girl for as long as possible, and gave her expensive gifts including a car and an engagement ring.
Prosecutor Christopher Rees told her: 'You abused her trust while she was 14.
'You did not want her parents to know because then they would know your sordid little secret.
'You were clearly obsessed with her - even when she went to university.'
Speed agreed she would end the relationship until she was 21 or after she finished full time education - but she broke her promise.
The girl’s mother said: 'I felt sick and angry. My daughter was a child. How could she have her sleep over at her house?'

Speed denied the charges but was found guilty and warned she will be jailed next month.
Judge David Wynn Morgan told Speed: 'Be under no illusions, the only issue is the length of the sentence rather than its nature.'
Speed is still employed at Fairview High School in Cwmbran, near Newport, until the council chiefs can conclude a process to terminate her contract.
A spokesman for Torfaen Council said: 'We apologise for the failure to protect this pupil during her time at the school.'

Ermm, what does she mean by "how could she let her have a sleepover at her house ".
Well misses if you have a 14 year old daughter..where the heff did you think she was all night?
Parental responsibility has to have a part in all this.

As to the teacher, shame on her.

why did I know comments about her appearance would matter to some people... would it be ok if she was attractive?

and tbh, the 'victim' sounds like a prick so w/e

#teampaedophile

i am joking she obviously should lose her job

why is everyone bitching about the victim, she could have reported her afterwards because she was being harassed

..her parents could have also put pressure on her to report it, which is understandable...

..it's incredible to think it could have gone on for 5 years with all of the sleepovers/meetings etc and a complete secret...I hope that she gets the appropriate sentence, I agree with Shaun though, her physical appearance is irrelevant....

It comes across though that the family knew about the relationship for a long time... so why did none of them report it at the time? Telling them to stay away from her until she turned 21 etc... so to me that's why it comes across like a revenge thing, the girl has decided to go to the police about the relationship after it ended.

Ammi
11-11-2013, 04:26 PM
..her parents must have found out about it at some point during the relationship but she promised that it had ended until she was 21yrs and they obviously must have believed it had...

She was a child abused by an adult, not just any adult but her teacher, someone who's supposed to be responsible and looking after her best interests.

Well yes...I gathered that and it's obviously repulsive but she continues a relationship with her for five years and then when she ends it she decides to go to the police? I accept other arguments put forward in this thread now but my initial point was that, like...why wait so long? And her age is not an excuse either since a 14 year old knows exactly that what the teacher was doing was illegal, if she'd been like 10 then yeah okay you might have an excuse but this is hardly a case of being groomed, she entered into an illegal relationship willingly and then reported it after five years when she finally decided it was over (aged 19, that's not young), that was the point I was making

I just don't think a 14 year old can make rational decisions like that especially stuff about sex etc. What the teacher probably did was make her leap into a sexual relationship alot faster than if the girl was sticking with other teenagers who were doing the same, an adult shouldn't do that to someone who's just hit puberty, it's not fair and it's taking away their innocence and natural rate of sexual progression. Maybe she didn't realise what this women had done to her and taken away from her until she was a bit older and wiser? (and I don't mean that to sound patronizing Jack, just that obviously you learn more as you get older and sometimes decisions you think were great when you're 14, don't look so good at 19) The teacher probably had a lot of sway over her while she was that young, especially an abusive adult like that teacher, i don't think the victim should be vilified for reporting her, no matter how much time has passed tbh
