There is another way, bit of a pain in the short term - remove the automated registration and make every new registrant be APPROVED by a Mod. irksome but it works.

You should put the safety and happiness of current members above the want for new members.

Also, for example, the fact that a mod needs to approve your thread for the first month of your membership would not deter many new members, I think.

Maybe it's someone who's been banned from TiBB before, maybe it's not, but approving registrations is fairly standard forum registration practise and I'm sure it would be a lot more manageable for the mods than deleting multiple threads and banning multiple accounts over a period of time every other day, there can't be that many sign ups in a week during off season.
