View Full Version : Sports Personality Of The Year 2013 [Discussion] 7:40pm Tonight

1: Ben Ainslie: Ainslie was widely credited with turning around Team USA's fortunes in the America's Cup having been brought in as tactician with the hosts coming from behind to win the last eight races and pull off a remarkable come-from-behind victory.

2: Ian Bell: The Warwickshire batsman contributed significantly to a summer of Ashes success with three centuries and his series-leading 562 runs - scored at an average of 62.44 - was 144 better than his nearest rival.

3: Hannah Cockroft: Having been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours, Cockroft retained both her T34 100 metres and T34 200 metres titles at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon and won the T33/T34 100 metres race at the Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium with a stadium record time of 17.80 seconds.

4: Mo Farah: Farah continued where he left off in 2012 by winning both 5,000m and 10,000m world titles in Moscow, as well as breaking Steve Cram's 28-year-old British 1,500m record in Monaco in July.

5: Chris Froome: May lack the broader public profile afforded his Great Britain team-mate Sir Bradley Wiggins but proved equally adept on two wheels by succeeding Wiggins as winner of the Tour de France.

6: Leigh Halfpenny: Halfpenny played in all three Lions tests in Australia in the summer and was named as player of the series, having already been voted Six Nations player of the year as Wales retained their title.

7: AP McCoy: The 2010 winner enjoyed another dominant year in the saddle, culminating in sealing his 4,000th career winner when his mount Mountain Tunes won at Towcester in early November.

8: Andy Murray: Ended Great Britain's 77-year wait for a men's singles Wimbledon title when he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Centre Court, having also previously lost in the Australian Open final to Djokovic.

9: Christine Ohuruogu: Ohuruogu bounced back from the disappointment of her silver medal in London by winning her second 400m world title in Moscow, pipping Amantle Montsho by the narrowest of margins.

10 Justin Rose: Finally made good on his early career promise by winning the US Open at Merion, overhauling five-time major winner Phil Mickelson to become the first English winner of the event in 43 years.

It's Andy's year.

But glad that Christine is in

Lee.
26-11-2013, 07:37 PM
Yeah, surely Andy will win it.

Novo
26-11-2013, 07:39 PM
Murray has it in the bag

AP would be a great shout after this year but he already won it a few years back, Ainslie will be the GOAT nominee never to win it

please give the Overseas one to Adam Scott

King Gizzard
26-11-2013, 07:40 PM
Ainslie pls

Don't mind Murray winning it, would be happy, but when is Ainslie ever going to win it

Marc
26-11-2013, 07:40 PM
Murray without a doubt.

Drew.
26-11-2013, 07:41 PM
1st: Andy
2nd: Farah
3rd: Rose/McCoy

26-11-2013, 07:41 PM
No Ronnie? Disgusting.

There's no point in watching though because this is only going to go one way and always was, but it'll be deserved

Brother Leon
26-11-2013, 07:59 PM
Should cancel nominees process and just give it to Sir Alex tbh.

Novo
26-11-2013, 08:00 PM
there will probably be a good half hour of the show dedicated to him, special award and all that jazz :idc:

smudgie
26-11-2013, 08:01 PM
It has to be Andy
Some great sporting personalities we have there.

Brother Leon
26-11-2013, 08:05 PM
there will probably be a good half hour of the show dedicated to him, special award and all that jazz :idc:

Should be for all the show and just give Murray 5 mins to get his award and speech :idc:

MTVN
27-11-2013, 12:39 AM
Yeah obviously going to be Murray, boring

Think it'll be between Froome, Farah and AP for 2nd and 3rd, AP to maybe just miss out

Shaun
27-11-2013, 12:40 AM
almost pointless the other 9 buying a suit/dress to wear there.

Marc
15-12-2013, 01:08 PM
Tonight!

Pete.
15-12-2013, 01:09 PM
Andy will own tonight

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 01:09 PM
Oh I forgot we had a thread, was going to make one.

Looking forward to it, even if the end result is obvious, love the montages

Marc
15-12-2013, 01:11 PM
-expects some sort of Nelson tribute which isn't needed IMO-

Alf
15-12-2013, 01:19 PM
Murray will obviously win it.

For me Farrah's achievement was better, and the fact he was snubbed and didn't even make the top three last year, i'd like him to win

Wigan Warriors for team of the year, they won the Super League and Challenge cup double, but i'm sure they'll find a team from a more popular sport to win that.

The late great Steve Prescott MBE for the Helen Rollason award would be a nice touch, but again, being in a sport like Rugby League will count against him.

Brother Leon
15-12-2013, 01:21 PM
Mo should win, but Murray will.

Pete.
15-12-2013, 01:23 PM
mo is a gimmick

Alf
15-12-2013, 01:25 PM
mo is a gimmick
And also Britain's greatest ever distance runner.

Novo
15-12-2013, 01:26 PM
Mo is a Gimmick for being a double olympic champion and World Champion in the last 2 years, okay then.

much more impressive then Murray's achievements

Novo
15-12-2013, 01:29 PM
Murray isn't even going to be there tonight anyway.. staying in the states even though he has nearly completely recovered :idc:

Alf
15-12-2013, 01:31 PM
The Scottish should be banned from voting, they're always patriotic when it comes to phone votes.

Pete.
15-12-2013, 02:20 PM
mo is a gimmick because of his stupid m thing that he does. That does not shade his achievements which are great

Novo
15-12-2013, 02:26 PM
Is Usain Bolt also a Gimmick then?

Marc
15-12-2013, 02:27 PM
Mo shouldn't win. Andy should.

Brother Leon
15-12-2013, 02:30 PM
Mo is a Gimmick for being a double olympic champion and World Champion in the last 2 years, okay then.

much more impressive then Murray's achievements

Basically this. Mo's achievements defy Murray's.

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 02:30 PM
The Scottish should be banned from voting, they're always patriotic when it comes to phone votes.

I'm English and would be voting Andy tonight, but I can't be arsed spending money, because it's obvs he'll win.

Hoping Christine is at least top 5.

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 02:31 PM
It's just depressing for Mo, he should have won last year, but had to contend with Murray's first slam, a british tour de france winner and the poster girl of the Olympics, and this year he's against Murray's Wimbledon win.

They'll be top 2 though.

Drew.
15-12-2013, 02:32 PM
mo is a gimmick because of his stupid m thing that he does. That does not shade his achievements which are great

So most athletes and sportsmen and women are gimmicks then.

Novo
15-12-2013, 02:32 PM
Murray achievements - Wimbledon Winner + Australian Open Runner up

Mo Achievements - 5000 and 10000m World Champion + 1,500m british record breaker

Novo
15-12-2013, 02:38 PM
i bet they'll just be boring and give the Overseas award to Ronaldo

Hejnova would be my winner just for winning every single event she has competed in this year including the World Champs

Headie
15-12-2013, 02:44 PM
Christine Ohuruogu

She's my favourite athlete ever... she's so positive about athletics and getting other people involved. Hope she can somehow crack the top 3.

Marc
15-12-2013, 02:47 PM
Overseas - Serena

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 02:48 PM
Christine Ohuruogu

She's my favourite athlete ever... she's so positive about athletics and getting other people involved. Hope she can somehow crack the top 3.

I would love her to be top 3, I think it's out of reach sadly, and people will see the other achievements as bigger, her winning the 400m's was such a great moment though <3. Bless her!

Novo
15-12-2013, 03:29 PM
Adam Scott or Hejnova maybe even Henrik Stenson

Alf
15-12-2013, 04:38 PM

Headie
15-12-2013, 07:27 PM
I would love her to be top 3, I think it's out of reach sadly, and people will see the other achievements as bigger, her winning the 400m's was such a great moment though <3. Bless her!

I was on the edge of my seat watching her in the 400m final at the World Champs.

I hope they show the race in full tonight... after all it's only 50 seconds and it's unlikely she'll get much airtime tonight anyway.

Drew.
15-12-2013, 07:31 PM
X Factor finishes 30 minutes before SPOTY so if you're watching both you shouldn't miss any of the main bits

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 07:48 PM
Who the bloody hell do they think they are showing Wigan winning the FA cup.

And who let John Newman be a thing?

Novo
15-12-2013, 07:51 PM

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 07:56 PM
ngl I don't know half the people nominated.

Marc
15-12-2013, 07:59 PM
I should be watching this instead of the WankFactor

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 08:00 PM
Leigh Halfpenny has just bored me to death.

Dedicate the rest of the show to Queen Christine to wake me up.

Headie
15-12-2013, 08:02 PM
Did she just say that there's a 'Welsh Personality Of The Year'?

There should be a Scottish one then and an Irish one so Christine can get into the Top 3 instead of the predictable AP McCoy and Andy Murray.

Alf
15-12-2013, 08:02 PM
I'm flicking between this and Darts
I've got Chisnall in an accumulator, he lost the first two sets, but has just won the third and big rocking Henderson is now tiering.

Novo
15-12-2013, 08:03 PM
Big Ben, what a hero

Black Dagger
15-12-2013, 08:03 PM
Sail being the montage music :worship:

Headie
15-12-2013, 08:04 PM

Legit don't know the rest though.

Headie
15-12-2013, 08:13 PM
I'm not even joking they better show Christine's FULL 400m race in her segment as well as mentioning her getting Sportswoman of the year this year.

It'll take like 1 minute of their time, it's the least they could do.

Novo
15-12-2013, 08:14 PM
they are showing segments from all the contenders so they probably will

Novo
15-12-2013, 08:14 PM

15-12-2013, 08:17 PM
they are showing segments from all the contenders so they probably will

Needs to be the full race though, otherwise it feels like an anti-climax.

Every time you watch the race you think she's gonna lose when there's like 100m to go... even though you know she's gonna win

Novo
15-12-2013, 08:22 PM

The only actual Englishman came last FML

Bell should have won for the sole reason he is the only English cricket player who does not **** himself when Mitch looks at him

Also Murray winning ahead of Halfpenny U WOT M8. Winning a default Wimbledon title is not enough i'm afraid

On top Ben should have placed higher to be fair

Andy had THE EASIEST DRAW IN HISTORY and until he finally exorcises the demon of his daddy Nadal on course to a slam he will continue to have an # i'm afraid

Bell had a better case then everyone of them

BRB ACTUALLY ENGLISH

BRB forget the poor decisions and weather single handily won the Ashes in England

BRB has faced Mitch like a man with a set of balls
