South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died, South Africa's president says.
Mr Mandela, 95, led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison.
He had been receiving intense home-based medical care for a lung infection after three months in hospital.
In a statement on South African national TV, Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela had "departed" and was at peace.

What a man , what a human being.....No one changed a nation for the better more than this giant....Kind, brave, noble, eloquent, intelligent, genuine, respectful, forgiving, determined, conciliatory, peace broker.....His enemies will point to his early years where fighting took place...but the fight was worth it.....How he reacted to imprisonment and the total injustice of it and of the racism in the country was an example to all human beings....the truth has set him free and all his people...God bless you Nelson, Youre a legend forever x

As the TV eulogise Nelson Mandela now, let no-one forget Nelson Mandela went to jail in 1964, and stayed there for 26 years, until 1990. Let no-one forget what went on in between. Britain went on trading with South Africa, like nothing was wrong. Some people took individual stances, refusing to trade, but the British govt. carried on trading, for all of 26 years after his arrest, with South Africa.

When Mandela dies, and David Cameron jumps on the Mandela bandwagon, remember that in 1985 he was a top member of the Federation of Conservative Students, which produced the "Hang Mandela" posters. In 1989, Cameron worked in the Tory Policy Unit at Central Office and went on an anti-sanctions fact-finding mission to South Africa with a pro-apartheid lobby firm sponsored by PW Botha. Remember this when he tells the world he was inspired by Madiba.

'No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite'.
Marvellous words Smile
“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner" - From his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, published in 1994.
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear"- From his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, published in 1994.
“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall"- From his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, published in 1994.
"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die" - Statement from the dock at the opening of the defence case in the Rivonia Trial, April 1964.
"I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands." - Addressing the crowds after his release from prison after 27 years.
"I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death" - - From his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, published in 1994.
"Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world. Let freedom reign" - Inauguration speech as President of South Africa, May 1994.

'Cameron broke with previous Conservative policy on South Africa while he was opposition leader. Returning in 2006 from a South African trip on which he met Mandela for the first time, he wrote in the Observer: "The mistakes my party made in the past with respect to relations with the ANC and sanctions on South Africa make it all the more important to listen now."'

Shush now - it's true that he himself would want that issue discussed far more than his own death, and it's true that willfully ignoring these obviously massive issues in favor of publishing endless and excessive obituaries is ironically making a mockery of everything this man stood for. But don't you understand, arista? Don't you see? There are more important things at play than his politics, here. He was not just a great man and a great politician, don't forget. More (most) importantly - he was a political celebrity.
A celebrity! A CELEBRITY, Arista... has died! All other news must wait for its proper time. Don't worry, it shouldn't be too long. in my opinion far too much as been laid at the feet of this man, in the 27 years he had been in prison, the world had moved on, and what was going on in south Africa was no longer going to be tolerated by the rest of the world.
don't get me wrong this man suffered for what he believed in, but no one is talking about the people that where killed by the death squads.

that's not much.....better than the utter ****e of following prince William and his bird for days and days just before she gave birth...then days guessing the name on live tv then days covering the birth then more days chatting **** about his frock.....the monarchy is a ffing bigoted wsteful farce that isntitutionalizes bigotry , division and poverty. they stand for nothing they represent nothing ...compared to them Mandela was a God
