Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has published the entry list for the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship, revealing the race number each driver has chosen to use for the remainder of his F1 career under revised regulations for the new season.

The list also includes Max Chilton as Marussia's second driver, leaving Caterham as the only team to finalise their 2014 line-up.

Each driver was invited by the FIA to state his preferred race number, with the driver who finished higher in the 2013 standings being favoured if the same number was requested more than once.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel chose number 5, but as reigning world champion has taken up his option to run with number 1 this season. Meanwhile, number 13 - not normally used due to its association with poor luck - has been chosen by Lotus's Pastor Maldonado.

McLaren will unveil their 2014 Formula One car, the Mercedes-powered MP4-29, in a digital-only online launch on Friday January 24, four days ahead of the first pre-season test of the year in Spain.

Images, videos and information about the car will be revealed to the public and media on the Woking team’s official website at 1200 hours GMT.

The news, which effectively confirms McLaren’s presence at the opening test of the year, comes a day after Lotus announced that they would not attend the four-day Jerez session and will instead launch their 2014 challenger ahead of the second test of the year in Bahrain.

Meanwhile, Mercedes, the 2013 constructors’ championship runners-up, confirmed plans to roll out their new car on the opening morning of the Jerez test on January 28.

Caterham have announced that they will unveil their Renault-powered 2014 car on the morning of January 28, the first day of pre-season testing, in Jerez.

As well as the four-day Spanish session, the team confirmed they will also attend the other two pre-season tests in Bahrain, the first of which runs from February 19-22 and the second from February 27 - March 2.

Caterham, who are yet to announce their 2014 driver line-up, are the third team after McLaren and Mercedes to officially confirm their attendance at the Jerez test with their new car.

Lotus revealed on Monday that they will not attend the Spanish session and will instead debut their new machine, the E22, at the first of the Bahrain tests.

There has been plenty of media speculation as to which teams will or won’t be present at the first pre-season test of 2014 in Spain later this month after Lotus announced they will not be debuting their new car until the Bahrain sessions in February.

Williams are the latest to confirm they will be at Jerez on for the opening four-day test at Jerez on January 28-31, after announcing on Twitter that they are entering build week with their Mercedes-powered FW36 machine.

Formula One is to introduce five-second penalties for certain offences from the upcoming season, the ruling body FIA said on Thursday night.

Pending approval from the F1 Commission and the teams, the F1 Strategy Group decided at a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland that these penalties can be taken before work is carried out on a car during a pit stop.

The five-second penalty gives race stewards more flexibility in imposing sanctions. Up to now, they could only impose drive-through penalties, which cost a racer around 20 seconds.

The Strategy Group also decided to give its team six so-called curfew “jokers” in 2014 instead of the previous two. The move was made in connection with major rule changes with new engines and cars. F1 has a six-hour curfew which lasts until three hours before the day’s first session, and eight hours on a Thursday.

The meeting, which included F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, FIA president Jean Todt and team representatives, also agreed to present a cost-cutting plan to the World Motor Sport Council in June, for introduction in 2015

Kimi Raikkonen says he is not surprised at the high attrition rate that blighted the first Formula 1 pre-season test day.

The Finn managed to top the timesheets after completing 31 laps in his new Ferrari, on a day when many of his potential title rivals hit trouble.

McLaren failed to run at all, Red Bull only managed three laps at the end of the day and Mercedes had to cut short its running after Lewis Hamilton crashed.

But rather than view the difficult first day of the new turbo cars as something to be worried about, Raikkonen thinks it was to be expected.

"For sure everybody wants to see more laps and we want to do more laps, but it is pretty normal with such a big change," said Raikkonen.

"It will take a little bit of time before we can run 100 per cent all the time and not have issues.

"I think we have started pretty OK."

Raikkonen reckons his day had been more normal than it appeared from the outside, and did not think the new cars were particularly different to drive compared to last year's V8-powered machines.

"I think the biggest challenge is getting all the new stuff working as we want, and working together," he explained.

"It is much trickier than what we are used to, but from the driving side I don't think it is an awful lot different.

"It is just the first day with all new stuff so it takes time to get things up to speed. One day to go, a lot of work to do, we know that.

"But we expected these first test days to learn things, so I really don't feel like it is such a big difference to this year or any previous one."
