I've recieved a number of emails claiming to be amazon but I think they are fake because they come from various hotmail accounts!
It's so weird, they say things like thanks for your order track it here etc! And then there's a link that goes to the actual amazon.
Has anyone else had these or anything similar and do I need to worry about it?

DON'T CLICK THE LINK.
It's sounds like a scam, just mark it as phishing scam.

The "link" that takes you to "Amazon" probably asks you to LOG IN with your user name and Password?

Can you paste the link here?
Benjamin
12-12-2013, 10:52 PM
Well as long as you didn't have to type your password in to go any further you should be okay. I'd keep an eye on your bank account for a few days just to see if there is any purchases made not by you (not wanting to freak you out).

x-evenstar-x

It was just a standard email I got, it said it's been sent to their investigation team blah blah blah beware you may not receive a personal message.
So maybe I will or maybe I won't lol
I would love to get free stuff but I'm pretty sure amazon won't be giving me any haha

If the emails are still in your trash you can extract the headers by following this link > https://faq.oit.gatech.edu/content/how-do-i-capture-message-headers-send-troubleshooting

12-12-2013, 11:31 PM
I'm thinking this is going to make me sound even more stupid than everyone must already think I am lol but what's a header?
lily.
12-12-2013, 11:32 PM
The header is the part of the email containing the originator's ID. You can tell the IP address of the person who sent it to you. It's contained in the header.
To be honest, I wouldn't bother. As long as you've changed your Amazon password, deleted the email and know now that you shouldn't click anything suspicious, you're sorted.
michael21
12-12-2013, 11:33 PM
part of the email containing the originator's ID
fingers
12-12-2013, 11:34 PM
Tt's the hidden information that you normally don't see but it is invaluable for fraud investigators.
x-evenstar-x
12-12-2013, 11:36 PM
I see, ok thank you :-) if I've forwarded the emails to them will they be able to get it? Or will I have to get it? And if so can I get it on an iPad?
lily.
12-12-2013, 11:36 PM
I never send these things on. I just mark them as spam, delete them, and get on with my life. There are way too many scammers out there for Amazon or companys like them to feasibly investigate, so I figure the best thing to do is educate people on keeping themselves safe, and then the scammers don't win.
It's up to you evenstar, but I think you've done enough for now.
lily.
12-12-2013, 11:37 PM
And, no, they can't get the headers.. you have to get them.. then forward the mail.
Are you using hotmail?
michael21

12-12-2013, 11:38 PM
Like Lily says, you have probably done enough, but generally i believe that headers are not recoverable from forwarded emails.
x-evenstar-x
12-12-2013, 11:41 PM
Ok, I'll just leave it I wouldn't know what I was doing anyways. Thanks everyone for helping me out, I've learned two things tonight - never click on things I'm unsure of and what headers are lol
lily.
12-12-2013, 11:41 PM
Fingers: They're definitely not.
In hotmail, I think there's a drop down arrow at the top of the email where 'reply' etc. is at.. and you can click it and 'view message source'. If you want to do that, you will get the source, and you can copy/paste it and send it to Amazon also.
Edit to add: Yeah, I think you've done enough. And, you have learned something. So that's a good thing. :)
x-evenstar-x
12-12-2013, 11:45 PM
Exactly, it's turned out to be kind of good, so long as no one robs me in the near future! Lol

lol, my mom got fooled by this. It was a fake email saying the tv she bought (which she obviously didn't) was on its way. She called amazon and everything. I took one look at the email and could tell it was fake

Nearly got done by one from the Royal Mail, it had their email address it was sent from and everything, the main reason I nearly get fooled was because I was expecting a parcel and it was late, but just deleted it anyway in case, and there's no way they'd be asking me to open an excel file

I was on Amazon earlier in the week ordering a gift and one of the reviews was a complaint about the oersons account being hacked and the item being delivered to the thief, so the scammers are having some success.

From Amazon's website, today:
"Unexpected E-mail from Amazon?
If you received an e-mail regarding an order you don't recognise, please check Your Orders in Your Account. If you can't find a matching order, the e-mail you received wasn't from Amazon.co.uk. We recommend that you delete the e-mail. There's no need to report these particular e-mails to us, as we are investigating the matter. You can read tips on safe online shopping here."
