It's just part of the Russian mindset unfortunately. Homosexuality is equated with Western hedonistic lifestyle, something that Russia has always built itself in opposition to ever since it was rejected by the West and treated like an adversary in Soviet times. Most Russians don't want to have Western values imposed on them, it's a very religious country and as horrible as it is to see the abuse homosexual people face, it's not even really about homosexuals, it's more about anti-Western propaganda - homosexuality being one such example of what the average Russian sees as a Western creation.
