A Las Vegas taxi driver has proved to be the Good Samaritan of the season after returning a bag full of cash found on his back seat.

Gerardo Gamboa thought someone had left a paper bag full of chocolates in his cab, but it turned out to be $300,000 (£184,000) in cold, hard cash.

The taxi driver was making a pick-up on Monday at the Bellagio hotel when a hotel doorman noticed the brown paper bag and handed it to him, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

He checked the bag while at a traffic light and found six bundles of $100 bills.

"Oh my God, this is cash money," was his immediate reaction to the find.

He called his supervisor and took the money to the company's main office.

Las Vegas police and casino officials were able to link the money to a well-known poker player whose identity remains secret.

The cabbie said he had not spoken to the passenger during the journey.

When asked if he had considered keeping the cash, he said: "Oh no, no, not even, not even one second, no."

It is unknown whether he will receive a reward from the poker player, but the cab company has awarded him $1,000 for his honesty.

Singing Mr Gamboa's praises, Bill Shranko of Yellow Checker Star Transportation said, "This guy is just terrific. Not one problem with him in the whole 13 years."

The taxi driver himself said he was satisfied with his decision to turn the money in.

"I did the right thing for myself, for my family, for my company and the city of Las Vegas," he said.

should of kept the money, Im sure he could have done more with it than the poker player owner who will more than likely lose the lot while gambling.

fools and their money are easily parted lost the money once in the cab and will gladly lose it again in a casino.

lowe it. I probably would have kept it because it's their fault for being careless, if I was carrying around $300,000 it would be super glued to my body

I would of kept the money it's somebody's fault if they left it there.

Hmmm.that would be theft.
I would have handed it in.
Only because it could probably have been tracked back to the cab though:joker:

So... the cab company he works for gave him £1000 as a reward. "It is unknown whether he will receive a reward from the poker player". The moral of this story is... keep the cash.

Good man, I would have handed it in too.

Also

this is cash money

Why do Americans say this? it does my head in when I read it in articles and see it on tv/movies, of course it's bloody cash money.

because it could be other forms of money besides cash(paper money) such as gold bullions

since it was a pick up the person would know the cab company and just the contacted them to get it back and the driver would have been found out. it's what any logical person would do

It's not just 300k though lets take American Pickers for an example..they use this phrase all the time and they are dealing in numbers as little as $10, it's just a stupid phrase that's somehow caught on because he's hardly going to hand over a credit card or a gold bullion whilst filming a tv show so it's obviously going to be cash.

Anyone rich enough to have a suitcase with $300,000 in cash and not remember to take it with them is probably more than capable of tracking you down and getting it back off you and it probably wouldn't be done politely  I'd be too scared of them finding me!

Meh. I'd still take the risk :joker:

Just deny all knowledge and say they must have dropped it getting in/out of the cab
