Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, Missy Elliott, Lil Kim... female rappers often get sucked into limiting themselves to what they rap about but Left Eye really rose above all of that, she's the absolute best in my opinion. Missy Elliott is consistent. Lil Kim's got some stand out moments. I like Azealia Banks but she's too new to really be considered one of the greats and her career may well have ended before it even started. I like Trina, Lady, Foxy Brown, Khia et al in an ironic way but they more or less restrict themselves to talking about the same **** over and over which is a bit mind numbing. Iggy Azalea has the potential to be one of the greatest of all time. Nicki Minaj is a parody of herself but Roman's Revenge, her feature on Kanye's track Monster, her song Massive Attack... they all show signs of a brilliant rapper. Wish she'd ditch the pop-lite rapping **** for a while and focus on establishing herself instead of featuring all over the place.

IA mostly

there's never been a standout female rapper before, they all just get to a certain height of fame and then fizzle out or disappear, there are lots of big male rappers who could be considered legends (in years to come), but only 1 or 2 female ones

I think it's sad. Nicki Minaj had this whole mission statement about how she wanted to cement herself as a legend, yet she's turned herself into a wacky wig wearing version of Missy Elliott - she's wasting her career on featuring on other people's tracks instead of building up her own discography. Before she knows it she's not going to be hot property and she'll have nothing to show for it. Most of Nicki's hits have been pop songs that have featured some rapping; not rap songs that have had crossover success. Left Eye died too young and Lil Kim's career was interrupted by her jail time and ruined by the amount of time she spent fighting with other people instead of working on herself...

People like to make out that rapping is just a man's game but in my opinion it's only that way because so few women try; and those who do and manage to get some kind of breakthrough into the mainstream then squander their chances by doing too many features and not enough building up their own discography.

Why is it such a hard decision for me to pick one? :bawling:

I like Ms Dynamite's comeback, it's been slow and steady and she's rebuilt herself as a credible artist once again. Hope she has more mainstream success.

Missy Elliot I would say is the best. Some great performers there though.

I don't consider her a rapper either but Wikipedia does so that's why she's in the poll  plus I needed some more well known artists

Most of them don't even really stick to rapping, a lot of them compromise and end up on pop songs, I think that's part of the reason why there are no true greats in the field
