Former X Factor finalist Ruth Lorenzo could soon be making an impact of a different kind, by aiming to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The singer – who reached the quarter-finals of the 2008 series, eventually won by Alexandra Burke – has a track in the running for the infamous pan-European musicfest, which this year will be held in Copenhagen.

But don’t expect to see her up there singing her heart out for the United Kingdom – as she is bidding to represent her native Spain.

Lorenzo, who was born in Murcia in the south-east of the country, will compete against four other hopefuls for the Spanish ticket to Denmark with her self-penned track Dancing In The Rain.

The winning song will be chosen next month.

The 31-year-old singer’s X Factor stint was best remembered for a controversial sing-off which saw her saved by the judges over the strongly fancied Laura White.

The decision caused an outcry among fans – with many accusing Louis Walsh of saving Lorenzo as she posed less of a threat to his act JLS – and was even debated in Parliament by White’s local MP Andrew Burnham.

Since her time on the show Lorenzo has enjoyed some success in Spain, as well as writing songs for the likes of former mentor Dannii Minogue.

The 2014 Eurovision Song Contest final will take place on May 10 in the Danish capital, with the semi-finals on May 6 and 8.

A representative for the United Kingdom – who finished 19th with Bonnie Tyler in 2013 – has yet to be announced.

I hope she gets it, but her song is in English and she's not well known as some of the others, so I'm not expecting much </3
