View Full Version : How Much do you Crave your Parents Approval?

I was listening to this song today, and realizing how *******ing controlled I am by my parents approval, and what a failure i am in their eyes.
So what do you think? Are you a slave to your parents approval?
Do you have your parents' approval?
Do you care what they think?
Are you everything they hoped you'd be?
I fantasize about being super successful and buying my dad an amazing house, and writing him a check for $100,000 to pay him back for everything he's given me, and just being able to say I don't owe you anything now!
I want to scream, "HEY DAD, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR SON NOW??!!" like in the song.
Is that a weird fantasy?

I care what my parents think about everything I do, I admire them and want to make them proud.

I care what my parents think about everything I do, I admire them and want to make them proud.
But do you think they are proud of you? is their approval automatic, or did you have to earn it?
Do you feel you have to constantly earn it? or is it a given, like unconditional?
I remember the first time(only time) my dad said he was proud of me. I cried.

At 17-21 I could not have given a fig for parental approval.
At the same time I was pretty discreet in most things I did due to showing respect.
I left home pretty young and went a tad wild, but eventually just settled into normality...whatever that is:spin:

I think they are proud of me but I still feel that I have to constantly earn it; I know they wouldn't turn around and tell me they were still proud of me if I did something stupid or failed at something spectacularly.

That's a beautiful thing if it's true. :)

Sometimes i wonder...what is more tragic, my need for my dad's approval, or his complete apathy towards his own son.
If i had a son he would be the star in my galaxy. I just don't understand why my dad doesn't see me that way, or if he does, why he doesn't treat me that way. My dad acts like a mobster from old movies, it's like he's incapable of any emotions.

Of course I want to make them proud but I'm still very much my own person.
It's a two way thing though, they're proud of the fact I'm getting a degree and commissioning artwork and all that stuff however they don't agree with my love of tattoos, but I respect their view in that I don't get any that I wouldn't be able to cover up if/when necessary. Also I'd NEVER get a tattoo without their approval or talking it through with them, I just think that's rude when youngsters do that.

wait... so your parents helped you plan all of your tattoos? That's actually really sweet. i wish my parents were that interested and involved with the things i care about.
It sounds like your parents are pretty ******ing awesome.

I wouldn't say as much as plan but I'd kind of tell them what I want and like without asking my Mum is on Google Images looking at ways it can be done or decorated so it looks best, that kind of thing. They know me well enough to know what I'd like now.
Like when they FINALLY allowed me to get a full sleeve I told them what I'd like it to be like and they helped me look at options and called around tattooists for prices and stuff ha! I design all of my own myself so whatever they say I alter until they're ok with it.
I know that they're more long-term thinking than I am so it's better for me in the long run to comply with their views about it so I ultimately won't end up regretting anything while at the same time I'm still getting things I genuinely want, if that makes sense.
My parents are too nice to say so but I know deep down in their eyes I'm a failure. Doesn't bother me now, I am who I am so I wouldn't say I crave approval really,

Well I dont crave my parents approval but I do have a few theories on why some other dont get the attention they feel they deserve.

I don't so much crave her approval as I try to avoid her disapproval

I'm the same Shaun. My parents disapproval would destroy me and my Dad is the type to not show much emotion. Glad I dont need their approval too much.
