Outrage as healthy two-year-old giraffe Marius is put down at Copenhagen Zoo and fed to lions.



The putting down of a healthy young giraffe in Denmark despite offers from a British zoo to rehome him has sparked outrage with many branding it ‘disgusting’.

Nearly 30,000 people signed an online petition to save two-year-old Marius but he was killed using a bolt gun at Copenhagen Zoo on Sunday.

The zoo said it had no choice but to destroy Marius because of its duty to avoid in-breeding.

Although a number of zoos across the globe, including Yorkshire Wildlife Park which has a state-of-the-art giraffe facility, had offered to take him in

I know some inbred people around here i'd like to put down...

the fact is the zoo's have small populations so it's not surprising that they have incest/rape in the zoo, the question is Why didn't they prevent it from happening? Obviously they let the males rape the females, for some reason zoo's think rape is okay as long as it's not inbreeding, then when it is inbreeding they just kill the offspring.

They should be preventing the rape to begin with, not just killing the rape babies only when it's inbred.

The zoo is perfectly happy with rape babies when it's not inbred though.

the zoo encourages rape, they even trap females into corners and encourage males to rape the females when they want breeding. it's disgusting/

you know when they say they are trying to breed pandas? yea, that means they are trying to get a male to rape a female.

To a zoo "breeding" means forcing a female to be impregnated.

Not a video of him being put down but a video of him lying there being chopped up by a butcher/zoo worker explaining it all to a bunch of visitors that don't look shocked in the slightest

They put him down in front of people too including children. Some of the parents look like they have the kids on their shoulders to get a better look....

What a tragic waste of a good animal, it is even moreso unacceptable and wrong when you consider there were offers of another home for the Giraffe.

there is no good excuse to keep animals like this in captivity. all large animals like this need the wild. all zoos are guilty of this.

there is no excuse for the word Zoo to exist. end them all now, and if you must, keep some sancuarys.

The difference between a zoo and a sanctuary, is that a zoo is designed for the public's entertainment. A sanctuary is designed for an animal to thrive.

i'd rather donate to a real conservation group, than to a zoo which is just using the money to fund an animal jail.

Have you seen the CNN documentary "Black Fish"?

All of the issues raised in that movie are just as applicable to large land animals as it is to the large sea creatures they documented.

They should not be in captivity, period.

i expect better from that country. pure animals they are no better than the wild animals they capture and keep captive.
