Channel 5 announces it is developing own Benefits Street called Living on the Social

The channel is currently looking for families and individuals to speak about their lives on welfare, though filming has already begun on the new series

Could White Dee be changing channels?
Channel 5 has confirmed that it is developing a new series based on those living on benefits.

Produced by the channel's in-house production company, the Benefits Street-style series is being developed under the title of Living on the Social and will follow the channel's documentary On Benefits and Proud.

The channel - which aired the Big Benefits Row live debate last week - is currently looking for families and individuals to speak about their lives on welfare, though filming has already begun.

Guy Davies, Channel 5's factual commissioning editor told industry magazine Broadcast: "After the success with On Benefits and Proud last year, we immediately started work on a new broader series with a working title Living on the Social.

"We've started filming people's stories, and working closely with them in various locations all over the UK."

Benefits Street became a surprise ratings hit for Channel 4 when it debuted in January and has been renewed for a second series, although the cameras will not return to the now notorious James Turner Street in Birmingham.

The Channel 4 docu-series will end on Monday with a 30-minute programme called Benefits Street: The Last Word, where cast members will talk about the show and Britain’s welfare system.

i agree with this too, it's like this new chav wave is like the wave of reality tv shows we had in the last 3/4 years aka Towie, MIC, The Valleys, Geordie Shore ect.

I tuned into Benefit Street on Monday to see what all the fuss was about, I tuned out again after 20 minutes. Alot of what was filmed was obviously staged, and as for White Dee :umm2: she must have a lot of time on her hands but her house looks like a tip

I'm sure the obsession with Benefits will soon pass, the media always likes to create a storm in a teacup but people will get bored. It's all just a deflection tactic by the government to not have to answer for any of the real issues.
