I knew it!!! So brave of her coming out at 26. Most people wait until they are older. Very beautiful speech as well.

we need to make a thread like the deathlist one, but call it the closet list instead and bet on celebrities who are going to come out as non-straight.

I remember that, but didn't she deny it?

She not only comes out, but she also explains everything she went through as a closet case in Hollywood, which is really big of her to do.

I've never really noticed her before, but for her to do this makes me have so much respect for her.

so sad. who cares, i'm starting to wonder if these celebs just do it for ego to make themselves feel special.
no one cares, like that woman dating johnny depp now. another one who made a big deal zzz

i see your point smeagol. its fine whatever anyones preference is. i sometimes find it funny on shows when people introduce themselves only the gay ones mention their sexual preference. not all the time but a good amount. especially on the reality shows over here in the US. i just think who cares but not in a harsh way. i just dont see the need to mention it. now if someone asks then ok.

Vicky.

I think making a huge deal about someone coming out, or the person making a huge deal about it themselves..actually makes it harder for others to come out

exactly. its like some kind of status . people just seem desperatly in need to be noticed and different. im bored with all the look at me celebs.
it seems the in thing lately. i swear some think they are in some cool club.
they either are or they are not we dont need a speech there's no oscars lol

It would have taken her a lot of courage to do this, especially with her being a hollywood celebrity. You're just ignorant

No it's not, you have no clue what you're on about. Being gay is not having a self important ego and her sharing her experience to help others despite the fact it could kill her career is courageous

Vicky.
17-02-2014, 11:30 PM
Would it really kill her career in this day and age though? Maybe like 50 years ago or something, but the world is much more tolerant now..hell, among my mates there seem to be round about an equal number of straight and gay/bi.

Also its MUCH easier for a lesbian. They dont face quite the same prejudices as gay men do. Women dont care really, and men just fantasise about lesbian sex

Shes in hollywood, not soap or TV. I can only think of Jodie Foster who is out. I think it's quite a big deal

But yeah, your second point is true, which makes those people hypocrites

I dont see what difference that makes?

I mean, good on her for coming out and all. I just dont see why there needs to be such a fanfare everytime a celeb comes out, thats all :S It makes out to others that its a massive deal..when really its not, its just how you were born

It must be very hard to come out male or female, I'm male myself I have came out to parts of my family that I see the most, it took me along time this is one reason I would never want to be famous having to come out to the world.

Coming out as gay is not being self absorbed? Ellen can't help it if the news picks it up

GypsyGoth
18-02-2014, 12:09 AM
The fact people claim not to care about it is a good thing, yet the same people don't go into threads on soaps-they-don't-watch to announce they don't care about this soap, so maybe part of them does care. Or else they wouldn't be in this thread.

Anyway one of the main reasons for Ellen coming out, it's for her own mental well being.

Also a high visibility of lgbt in a society emphasizes how normal and every day people of a different sexuality are. When we hide, then it allows crazies to push whatever agendas they want on society, claiming we're bad or wicked, that we should be imprisoned, or we're like that because we haven't met the right man. If everyone who wasn't a heterosexual hid, then there would be no one to speak out. No role models, no successful actresses/business/teachers... we could point to highlight that because you love someone of the same gender, well that doesn't make you a bad person.

So who benefits if famous people don't come out and stay in the closet? Not the lgbt community for sure.

What Ellen did could cost her a lot of roles in hollywood, sure she's made a lot of friends and supporters, but even judging from this thread, she's upset some people.

Really? But if someone is scared and is fighting not to be gay its their personal torment. Wether people accept it or are fine with it is a totally different issue, the struggle to admit to yourself as gay is the hardest part, its a personal struggle.

On the other hand though I can also see why people are afraid to tell people around them, its fine to think that its no big deal but it still is, look at Kansas and Russia gay people are still being isolated and seen as health risks, perverts and a lower species.

I find I do have to tell people im gay whenever I start a new job unfortunately because there's always the *do you have a gf comment or *do you think SHES fit.

Why would I lie and make life hard? People do care about peoples sexuality and always will as long as religion, politics and scared or small minded people are on the earth. Lets be real its never going to be 100% accepted....Its like saying world peace will eventually happen.

Im talking bout gay people in general and using examples of my own personal experiences.

Its totally related to the subject and I think you should learn to not be so black and white about things as these issues run much deeper than your own little wash my hands of the topic opinion.

Also it wasn't only about celebs she was speaking to hundreds of gay people about issues that effect everyday LGBT members of society.

Your post was plain rude.

Do you just want me to talk bout Juno?

The only rudeness here is people with their own hangups who want so much to relate to celebs people they dont even know than to see the big picture. like the 18yr old celebs who have to announce they went to rehab lol aww says the sheep or bahh. some in the real world just say wtf

That's a very bitter and cynical way to describe what you just watched...Oh wait you probably didn't.

She is not some reality tv star looking for attention shes an academy award nominated actress and this could hinder her career.

She was 100% sincere and I admire her for doing it, its offensive to just compare this to some z lister proclaiming to be on drugs to get attention by going to rehab.

That wasn't self absorbed it was inspiring to see and here about how much the lgbt community help each other, its not as if she went to the press and announced it in a trashy magazine lol shes kept it hidden for years.

she's not breaking new ground. she's not angelina jolie. her name is one of many that most wouldn't know who.
just another celeb jumping up and down then will say but treat me the same lol.

That's not a fact. I CARE and so do hundreds of thousands of other non sinical individuals who relate to her words.

So the bigger the celeb in your eyes is more important, that's celeb culture influencing you right there by thinking the higher the status the better the person.

You think because she's apparently an unkown shes irrelevant, what does that make us unkowns on here then? Do your opinions and rights not count because you are just an average Joe?
